The variety kit actually has far more cardboard in it than the robot kit.
The robot kit has other stuff in it though like 4 sheets of cardstock and stuff. Which you can build the backpack out of.

Cue point however.
The variety kit actually does have a lot of materials in it. Assuming the actual software is priced/valued the same, it makes sense that the variety kit is priced relatively close to that of the robot kit.

The cardboard is definitely supposed to be there for the full experience but I imagine some would be semi-playable without it. Not the robo or the shakey-man one but the motorcycle one probably will be.
