What are some good controllers to use for PC gaming?
For those other gayms that just work better with a gamepad.

XB1
Logitech F310
Has both Direct- and Xinput modes, meaning it just werks.
bitch to get to work on anything other than W10.
I literally returned one back to a store last week because of that scam.
Recently got a Gamesir G3s, because I also needed a new PS3 controller, it's pretty good for a chink product. Might buy a second for that 2 player action.
>Logitech F310
>No vibration
fugg
>voluntarily wanting to use vib
I got it set up on W10. It's VERY picky about what kind of micro USB cable you use though. The one I bought with the controller didn't work (was actually defective), but one I had lying around for an old phone did the trick
The real shit thing is that there is no way to calibrate or otherwise configure it because MS locks the config app behind W10
just get a pc 360 controller
/thread
Like I said, using Xbone pads on any other OS than W10 is the bitch part, and those USB issues don't help. I'm on W7 Ultimate, and will never "upgrade" either, and that shit hit me like a shovel out of the blue.
Annoying stealth marketing and herding people towards shittier systems. It doesn't help that I find Xbox pads annoyingly slippery and uncomfortable in general.
enjoy that shit breaking up after 3 months. And paying 2x the price, just because MS' brand.
The offbrand ones work fine
I was using an Afterglow 360 controller and that shit lasted years. Finally had to replace it because the shoulder buttons were giving out and not registering inputs. But they don't sell those specific ones at FUCKING GAMESTOP any more so I just splurged and bought myself an XB1 controller.
Microsoft's controllers
>The offbrand ones work fine
got the Rockcandy 360 pad for 15 bucks brand new from a store, and its USB cord started deteriorating after mere couple months of very light use.
...are the ones to avoid at all costs.
The absolute minimum to play PC games is this:
Hori fightstick
Microsoft official 360 controller
thrustmaster wheel
steam controller
wired mouse and keyboard
if you don't have all of these, then you aren't playing games.
Yeah those shits look cheap as hell, the Afterglow ones were pretty solid though.
XB360
XB1
Pros:
Already work with xinput
Work natively with windows
Great feel
Rumble etc
Cons:
expensive
>offbrand is bad
>official is bad
What the fuck do you want then.
i hate PlayStation controllers but i use a dualshock 4. most games work well with it usually, i don't use it much but it gets the job done. no compatibility with bbt which is very annoying but eh.
>steam controller
the "touch" buttons feel really weird to use. I prefer actual physical buttons
For anything 2D there is nothing superior
3D I like the xbone controller
XB1 pads only work "natively" with W10.
They also do not support DirectInput, which is a big issue with any game and emulator made before the year 2007.
More these.
mine is 4 years old and i throw it around
that said i wouldn't buy x360 controller in 2018, i'd get a xb1s instead
It's a great controller, though it has a short lifespan. After a while my dpad just died and the shoulder buttons started becoming unresponsive. That was after three years, though I have playstation 2 controllers that still work fine.
They are super cheap though, so buying a new one when they break isn't the worst.
I quite like the dualshock 3 and 4 for pc gaming.
I prefer physical buttons too, but there's a few games where it comes in handy.
I love it for emulation, like wii motion controls and stuff.
i'm with u. steam controller sucks shit out the loose asshole of a hoe.
This thing would be perfect if it had better sticks and better fucking triggers.
Fuck just make the triggers digital.
woah what, snes with analog sticks??? anyone have a link?
I use mayflash adaptors for nes, snes, and n64 controller, Wii U Pro controllers for most modern games, and the Hori Fight Commander for fighting games.
Nah dude I bought one and it was low quality af. Stuck trigger and dpad all the time
>It's a great controller, though it has a short lifespan
my oldass Logitech something or another still works after well over 10 years. It has survived 3 long distance moves and plenty of abuse in general.
>triggers
one thing I hate a lot this day and age
>For anything 2D there is nothing superior
Try again
>not wanting to stimulate yourself
Aren't those incredibly rare and expensive?
There's also a lot of shitty knock offs
Which Hori Fight Commander do you have and what are your thoughts on it? I was looking to get a Saturn USB controller like but they go for like +$200 on eBay so I'm considering just getting a Hori fightpad instead.
is the cord 6 inches long or is it wrapped up behind the pad..?
I still have no regrets buying a Steam Controller.
Sorry, I'm not a faggot.
Not that guy, but I have a Hori Fighting Commander 4, I have to sometimes flick the switch to go from PS4, PS3, or PC mode depending on what game I play, but god damn the buttons and D pad are great.
I like this one, works with PC and Switch. Though don't buy it expecting it to replace your other controller, stick games feel better with a bigger grip.
I have an Xbone elite controller that came with the Xbox. It's honestly the best controller I've ever used, especially with the paddles on the back. You can configure them however you like and it's all memory stored on the controller so it's standardized whether I'm playing on my Xbox, PC or friends Xbox.
Where is your HOTAS?
The buttons and Dpad are great on the sega controller, the Hori ones look great too but the left hand grip on the Commander 4 seems kinda weird.
Yeah they are, back like 10 years ago they did a rerun and you could buy a real SLS version for $20 but now theyre out of stock everywhere so people are charge 10x as much for it which is absurd.
If you actually have one though it's a God-tier controller for SHMUPS and fighting games. Especially if you have the PS2 version, you can use a Brook adaptor to use it on PS4 and PC.
I haven't used that exact model but I'm pretty sure it's wrapped behind the pad.
The one I have is normal shaped
XBox One S controller is the best, fact
What are your thoughts on it? This is the Fighting Commander 4 btw.
Like I mentioned before, the D-pad and buttons are great. Sometimes I have to fuck with the switch that goes between PS3/PS4/PC mode. But other than that it's a fucking great controller.
And that's weird, because the one I posted is the Hori Commander 4.
>detachable cable
>"a USB device has been unplugged"
>plug controller back in
>game won't recognize controller unless alt+f4 and restart geimu
>accidentally drop controller
>usb cable is defect
no thank you
Literally never happens
It happened to me three times in a span of two weeks, which is the main reason I went back to my 360 controller. The Xbox one controller is designed in such a way that is is very likely for the micro usb to simply snap if you drop it at a bad angle.
dont drop it???
But I'm a clumsy person, and when I play vidya I'm often times not sober. That being said, I never had this issue with any controllers in the past.
No reason to get a controller when you get get these. Hell, if you're not willing to shell out for the Hori you can still get the g16 or the Tartarus v2.
>playing sidescrollers and platformers with this set up
You can use the analog stick on the keypad and you don't have to lift your thumb away from the right analogy stick like you would with a controller.
The Hori Commander 4 is the one I posted, you posted the non-4 version which is newer and doesn't have the extended left grip and rotatable Dpad. I'm probably going to buy the one you own since it's less expensive and seems to have better reviewed since the Saturn controller is rare and the madcatz fightpad look really bad.
How are you supposed to hold on to this thing when you happen to have 2 hands?
The Hori TAC is absolute trash especially the garbage mouse it comes with.
You don't have to use the mouse. You can use your own mouse. And the TAC is not trash since it is the only mechanical keypad with an analog stick.
>using an analog stick on 2D game
what are you doing
I'm really confused now, it has PS4 compatibility, like even in that pic I posted it has a switch for PS4.
Stick to WASD or get the razer tartaru if you're that anal about needing a D pad.
They both have PS4 comparability the older version of the controller with asymmetrical grips is called the Fighting Commander 4, HORI just dropped the 4 from the name with the newer version that you have which is just called the Fighting Commander. But yeah I can see why it's confusing.
An Xbox 360 controller serves me really well. I had it for years and everything still works great. It already lasts longer than the previous 3 of my logitech controllers combined.
Trying to play a 2D action game with an analog stick or keyboard is like playing an FPS with a controller.
You're just gimping yourself.
2D action games on keyboard are perfectly fine as long as your keyboard doesn't shit itself at 4 simultaneous button presses.
Unless you're W10 (why the fuck would you be) this is a very bad suggestion as it DOES NOT play nice with anything else. I've had a couple of them and each one ended up deleting their existence so the PC couldn't read them on any level. Even installing drivers didn't work.
So avoid unless you like burning cash.
The keyboard and stick are low quality, not as bad as the mouse but still pretty bad for the price and it's intented to be used on PS4 for shooters for people who don't want to shell out for a XIM. Combining a keyboard with an analog stick is pointless and unnecessary, most games that makes use of an analog stick over a mouse are better played on a real controller and vice versa.
I'm using DS4.
Because NES SNES DS PS1 emulators.
I think it's meant for fighting game players who want to hold the controller like it's a fightstick, where you use your index, middle and pointer fingers to hit the face buttons while gripping the controller with your left hand and using your thumb on the pad.
Then go buy some buffallo game pad or something. The TAC plus multi button mouse will cover you for all games regardless.
Don't know why any gamer who is on PC wouldn't at least be using a mechanical keyboard and allows you to press multiple keys.
There is nothing pointless about a keypad with an analog stick. The g16 is the same price as a controller, but offers more buttons and an analog stick, and you don't have to do retarded shit like using a claw grip on a controller.
anyone got a nintendo switch pro controller working on the PC?
Either the DS4 or the xbone. I personally prefer the former.
Everything else is either subpar or overpriced.
Source: I have a lot of fucking controllers from just about everything four generations back
DualShock 4
DS4 v2
X1
Anyone who recommends the 360 is an idiot.
X1 has good improvements (the biggest one probably the D-Pad) but the DS4 also has a trackpack which you can assign functions to so it has more functionality.
Apparently the Steam Controller is great but I haven't tried it.
>calls others an idiot for recommending the 360 pad, the literal "just werks" controller
>yet in the same post reccomends the bone pad which only works with W10, anything below it fucks up
Fucking WHEW
A keypad with an analog stick is absolutely pointless. In what game would you be better off using both a keyboard and analog stick vs a controller or mouse? If you're playing a game that makes meaningful use of a left analog stick (ie 3D platformers) you're better off using a controllers and if you really want a keypad for some reason there are much better quality options out there than the TAC. There's no point to it.
I was pure 360 pad for 10 years but then I got a PS3 control and upgraded to a PS4 control.
PS3 control is the undisputed king of PC gaming, PS4 is a nicer control but the battery is like 25% what the PS3 can do. PS3 is like 30 hours of gametime, PS4 is like 15 max.
Get a PS3 control - cheap, best quality, small and perfect.
The only keypads are from Razer and Logitech. The Logitech is membrane and the Orbweaver is the only mechanical and it's a damn D pad not an analog.
And those games you would use a controller you would have to use claw grip to control the camera and use the buttons at the same time. Claw gripping is unnatural and no egromatic.
Bone/Switch Pro for 3D games
Hori fight pad for 2D games
>Only works with Windows 10
Incorrect. I can use it on Windows 7 just fine
I just use a wired 360 controller that I bought used for like $20 a few years ago and the thing still works perfectly fine. I've tried out many of the new controllers posted in here (X1X, PS4, Steam) and none of them are that much better to tempt me to buy them. Each one has something I don't like about it so I'd just be paying money to trade one little flaw for another.
Both of them have better build quality than the "mechanical" tach and again the analog is mostly useless. In what games are you forced to use a claw grip to control the camera but would be better off using analog over a mouse?
And I could. Until the cable disconnects even slightly (and it will happen eventually) then the pad stops registering and nothing you can do will save it. 360 pad? I can unplug and plug in all day no problems.
I was talking about using the analog on the TAC for movement not for controlling the camera.
You said you would have to use claw grip to control the camera and use the buttons at the same time. Again, what games are you playing where analog is better than a mouse but still forces you to claw grip on a regular controller?
Yea claw grip using a controller not using a mouse.
To control the camera and use the buttons at the same time. The mouse is better for controlling the camera over analog unless you're playing a game specifically designed for analog in which case claw grip isn't needed.
Flashy action games such as DMC come to mind where it is better to use a controller so you're forced to claw grip.
In other words games where you shouldn't be playing on a keypad in the first place.
fpbp
Supposedly controllers are better, but I never found them better. I found a keypad plus mouse to be better always and it is better for the most part since you can put in macros on your mouse and have access to more keys so you don't have to do retarded shit like claw grip and/or have to do combinations like X+Square or Triangle+O while claw griping such as Batman arkham games.
I don't see how a keypad plus mouse would be better for games like DMC Bayo or Ninja Gaiden Black but you do you. No high level player those games use a keypad or rely on macros for obvious reasons, and I've never had to claw grip for something as simple and slow as the BamHam games on a controller. If you really needeed to control the camera and attack buttons simultaneously (don't know why you would do this in BamHam) you would be better served with a scuf controller.
Bought a Gamesir t1s today, anyone has it?
...
How are Gamesir controllers in general? I'm always skeptical when it comes to third party but these seem sleek and professional.
If you don't like to ride the cock of capitalism I advise you to check out chink made 360 pads for 10 bucks a pop on ebay...cheap, sturdy, just works.
360 Or XBone controller for modurn games.
USB (console) controller for emulating old games.
Xb1 controllers have been patched to work down to win7 quite a while ago
