having played it 2 months ago, long after all the hype had died down, i understand why
it had excellent art direction but the plot was predictable and boring, the battle system was too easy but also somehow still frustrating (poor ally AI), and the story should have ended after beating Shadar (and was originally meant to, as I understand the white witch stuff was like dlc or something in japan but that we got in the english version as like, the main thrust of the game).
i had a good time but it was flawed enough that i have strong reservations about the sequel

Basically this . The visuals and soundtrack were all it really had going for it. NNKII looks significantly better and I think Ghibli not being involved will actually help it, but a lot of people have already been turned off by the first one.
The first game got a lot of attention too over the limited edition fiasco.
