I'm currently 15-ish hour into XC2 and this is probably the biggest drop in writing quality I've ever seen. I refuse to believe that any of the people that wrote or worked on XC1 had any part in making it.

Then the writing and characters actually started to draw me in.

By chapter 6 and 7 I was in love with the game, it was even, IMO, better than Persona 5

I shouldn't have to wait 20 hour to fall in love with a character, to even life them. Every character so far is an insane trope, every girl is a titty monster, and every villian is literally *teleports behind you* tier. If I could get a refund I would. XC2 is a disgrace to the series and I hope XC3 never come out.

This. I've loved every Xenoblade game but this is the first time I've found myself jonesing for more content. You just don't see JRPGs that really aim for that expansive, adventure feel anymore and it's a shame. Granted, tons of JRPGs are great but there's been a more narrow focus on story where the set pieces are mostly jsut setpieces.

X reaffirmed my preference for world building and exploration over story. Such a good ride. Though preferably, I hope X2 does better on the narrative front.

Romancing SaGa 2 really re-ignited my excitement for Octopath.
I love the aesthetic, and even the overuse of bloom is kinda charming in a Wii Era sort of way

Fire Emblem at least has the excuse of having very little time to develop those characters although Shadows of Valentia just showed it's possible if they don't go full retard and make children mandatory

X2 should have three long side stories that run concurrently instead of a single focused narrative. It's a sci-fi series, so it's best to give us more exposure to the world being built and give us 2-3 party members involved in each of the three stories as they take turns getting attention.

The core arc for Rex is that he's going from a childish idea of what friendships and relationships are to a more nuanced, adult understanding.

He's responsible and generous in the beginning and that doesn't really change throughout the story because that's not what's changing in him from the beginning to the end

persona 5 goes to shit around hour 25, while xenoblade becomes amazing around that time

P5 had a lot of the same issues in direction as The Last Jedi for me.

TLJ really tried to copy the broadstrokes of Empire: a dark tone and surprising plot twists. TLJ tried to emulate that tone by having everyone fail and keeping a steady stream of deaths throughout the movie, as well as making most characters dour or completely serious (casino scene notwithstanding). They made plot twists, always with inconsequential things and specifically the opposite of fan theories. The issue is that the plot twists and the dark tone don't actually work to the themes of the movie itself. It was copying Empire at a surface level without diving deep into what produced its dark tone or plot twist.

P5 does something similar where it apes on P4 a ton, often to a detriment. You're still going into peoples heads (this wasn't a thing until P4 really) and you're still changing the person whose head you're going into, and there's still a plot twist involving a detective betraying you and a theme of society's subconscious wish for superficial answers to their problems. But where P4 built its entire game around its ideas and its story and mechanics came naturally from that, the theme of P5 is very often at odds with the actual plot or story elements. It's done well with Kamoshida and never again

XC3 should come out, but it should be more like XC1.

Why do XC1 niggers always say this when XC2 did all that a lot better. XC1 was fucking boring until about 20+ hours in and even then the characters were pretty bland until the last act. It's not a bad game but it's way overrated on here. Hell I enjoyed the original Xenogears more than XC1 before it goes into light novel mode. XCX is still the best in the series.
