Why aren't you playing the public alpha of this masterpiece yet? Also general Star Citizen thread.
Star Citizen
What can I do in it
It's a seamless sandbox. No in-game loading screens. Imagine GTA in space, in a serious sci-fi environment. Land on planets, do missions, all online with other players, fuck around. The scale of the game is the biggest thing.
The sheer immersion and level of detail in everything is incredible. I swear I'm there even without VR. Check some vids out.
Give me some hard examples or is it just
>get mission to transport 1000m^3 of silicon to X
>8 minute warp to X
>deliver and go back
>rinse and repeat
nigga I get true immersion in real life
what can I do in this "game"
>tfw no Star Citizen-like game with a more realistic scope that isn't retarded like staying within the Sol system and utilizing an Astral Gates system of FTL a la Cowboy Bebop
Why do I have to pay $45 for an Alpha?
Is this what the game has come to?
Have they finally drained their most desperate and autistic supporters dry of money, and now you're here trying to reel in more?
I have a question for anybody that can answer: what is the (ballpark) amount of funding this game's development has received to date?
$177 million
Really
Okay.
Now how about, let's find some other games, from indie to AAA, and see how the budget compares. Gonna go hunt info for a minute...
$141m
There is literally no reason for people to pay real money for these space ships, the lead devs are millionaires and could make the game F2P at this point.
The public alpha was neat for a while. The lack of any progress and crashes losing all your cargo kind of prevents long term enjoyment.
If I could buy some ships, even if it was just a couple of the cheaper ones, it might keep me motivated, but overall it was just enjoying a couple hours of a nice demo.
>I have no idea how business works
The point is to make as much money as possible, not to give stuff for free when you get a set amount. They're not your friends, they're not looking to make the best game there ever was. They're just there to make a game that people will invest in and make money.
There is no passion in the industry anymore. Innovation, yes, but no pro-consumerism.
>budget
The game is an MMO in scale with AAA production. Shit is expensive, though largely because they keep fucking inflating the scope. I'm just waiting for Squadron 42 and we'll see how the persistent universe ends up after that.
>Squadron 42
>ever coming out
You did hear about Crytek suing them for using the Cryengine in S42 without crediting Crytek?
The alpha is absolutely not worth playing for fun.
The game doesn't have a gameplay loop yet and there are huge disparities between ships with no way to purchase them or weapons ingame until 3.1. You're not gonna do shit to anyone with your little Aurora/Mustang.
All you can really do now is test some early systems and look at some cool space shit.
Got some examples
Sticking strictly to dev costs, USD
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt :: 46 MIL
Metal Gear Solid V :: 80 MIL
GTA V :: 68 MIL
Half Life 2 :: 40 MIL
Elite Dangerous :: somewhere from 10-20 MIL
Star Citizen :: 177 MIL
How dumb do you have to be to not realize by now the only thing they're selling you are promises?
Yes but what can I do in it
This and I don't think anyone really knows how many people are working on it. They could have
>Star Citizen :: 177 MIL
The thing here is that they've raised 177 million but that doesn't mean all of it is going to development. After they're "done" with the game they might have used a 100 mil on advertising.
>implying crytek isnt throwing a bitch fit
Where'd you get $68m for GTAV? Everything I see says dev costs were in excess of $100mil (ignoring marketing costs)
>taking action on a violation of contract is throwing a bitch fit
>being this much of a brainlet
They have all the right in the world to be mad. If I used your creations, called it my own and made tons of money, wouldn't you be throwing a "bitch fit" as well?
Bitch fit in that there hasnt actually been violation of contract.
Destiny : 550M
Money truely brings quality!
How the fuck do you use the cryengine without crediting Crytek? It's already called the fucking cryengine.
>use Cryengine
>modify Cryengine
>call it something else
>not violating any contracts
user pls.
>not violating any contracts
You are aware that contracts are convoluted messes of semantics and technicality, yes?
Is there character creation?
polygon.com
I apparently didn't remember everything correctly, but here's the scoop.
Because I would rather play video games
>polygon
This lawsuit is the stupidest shit
>License an engine a game and a standalone dlc single player under the agreement you would be provided support and assistance
>They fail to provide support and assistance so you move to a newer, better fork of the engine
>How dare you leave because we didn't uphold our side? Don't you know you're supposed to stay on this sinking ship though our agreement doesn't actually say you have to stick with our engine? You have to give us everything you did up to this point now. Oh, and you referred to your DLC as a "game". So now you have to pay us a second license fee.
Crytek is a scummy company. Always has been. This wouldn't the first time they pulled an absolute scumbag move against friends/business partners/workers/fans.
Crytek is shitting itself and trying to get an influx of cash, thats literally all the lawsuit is, and its not going to get them anything. Its pathetic.
The game looks gorgeous and the first person inside ships is really neat but there is jackshit to do in the game right now even though it's been in "alpha" for 6 years.
I'd rather just play Space Engine, it's free.
how is it compared to elite dangerous? and how do i get in?
buy jpeg's
he's just fanboy cunt
>GTA in space
I just realized that that's boring. GTA is the worst sandbox
why can't images be posted?
>public alpha
"no"
>Why aren't you playing the public alpha of this masterpiece yet?
because i don't have $7,000 for a PC that will get me ~20 fps and I don't have another $7,000 to buy the ships I would need to compete with the whales
>what is the (ballpark) amount of funding this game's development has received to date?
probably over $200 million if you count non-backer investors and loans/lines of credit with banks
>You did hear about Crytek suing them for using the Cryengine in S42 without crediting Crytek?
SQ42 is built on Lumberyard, which is Amazon's free distro of CryEngine 3.8
lumberyard
>people backed this game when they could have just put their money in a bank and made a billion dollars in interest by the time Star Citizen releases
You can get 60 fps with a 980 ti depending on patch. Some patches have worse performance like 10 fps, while others rocket back up to 60 fps as they optimize shit. It only cost 30 dollars for base game with a base ship, and right now you get access to ships you don't own. And you don't automatically lose dogfights for not owning a capital ship, which aren't even flyable yet, and even if they were you don't dogfight with a capital.
If they didn't chose Cryengine and used Unreal instead would it be out by now or no?
shut up derek
no, because cringe roberts is a buffoon of burlesque proportions
I sold all the shit I bought for the game back when I was a retard and made a $210 profit.
there's like 15 games i'd rather be playing, including 5 that are in early access but are still more developed than SC
Have they even hit any milestone or promises they have made on time?
can I RP as a spess mehreen in this game and pretend im fighting for the emprah wif my batehl bruvas
But a major part in why it has been shit is because the cryengine is so fucking unoptimized and can't handle hundreds of players in one spot. But probably even if they used Unreal it would still be shit - Roberts is a mong and doesn't have a clear focus on the game it wants to be every fucking genre instead of having a main focus and is delayed time and time again.
>$177M budget
>uses free engine from Amazon
AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
didnt even bother to read any responses in this thread. my game informer has been pissing me off about this game lately.
the scale of things is incredibly, there is no denying it. cruising down to planets is more seamless that KSP and has infinitely more detail. words do not do this justice. in 2014 when i first saw this game it was advertised as a game that required Nth degree PC performance and for good fucking reasons. the hate for this game is so undeserving. this is no let down.
So if I buy the game right now, what is available for me to play?
missions, both criminal and good-standing. flying to and fighting to turn on satellites (which turn unpatrolled areas into patrolled areas), private investigation missions requiring you to either find floating debris or explore abandoned outposts, some straight up dogfight missions, hunt other player missions, LITERAL HIDDEN TRADING OUTPOSTS that are off all maps. shit was like blade runner.
>landing upside down on the underside of landing platforms to get the sneak on your enemy
>zero G first person shootouts in space with SMGs
>dogfights thats swoop down from space into surface canyons
>getting stranded and calling for help. describing your whereabouts in space while your oxygen runs lower and lower
and so much more we have not even discovered. get on board.
>and so much more we have not even discovered. get on board
This sounds like so much PR bs.
at least try to hide it somewhat, fucking hell man
I dont care about SC, more about squadron 42, but from the recent vertical slice, it looks boring and tedious as fuck to play.
>why aren't you playing the star citizen alpha
I didn't give them money because I was never dropped as a baby, never ate paint chips, didn't fall in a pool for minutes before being rescued, and my parents aren't related to each other
You get true immersion into an interstellar life-style where you can command your own ship in space, cruise between planets, and fight in space marine battles IRL?
Hella sick, bro.
IRL doesn't have massive FPS drops and I can't lose all my shit if the game randomly crashes though
>IRL doesn't have massive FPS drops
I do get that shit sometimes, but my hardware is shit
Has Chris bought anymore funky 50k space doors for his office yet?
Or anymore extravagant ornaments to decorate his office with?
>It's like X but in X!
stop doing this
So is the big 3.0 thing properly out yet for everyone or not?
>3.0
>still an alpha
what
Yeah, but what can I do in it that's fun? A seamless sandbox doesn't imply fun.
Does this alpha have anything other than "seamless sandbox"? Did they flesh out the space battles and the fps mode yet? Because thats the least they have to do after 6 years and 177M in development
0.0.3 would scare moneybags away
is the game meant to be EVE online territory control sandbox, or WoW with spaceships instanced everything
They're trying to do the eve thing, but real time
so anybody not 5km from the server is going to get pingfucked by those that are
So nobody actually cares about the mmo, especially not playing against whales
The singleplayer is the only thing holding interest
yep
see other than that theres a couple "shoot these guys" or "survive these enemy waves" missions but everything else is "look at how good this game looks and buy more ship JPGs"
...
Where is your blini? Why are you wearing pants?
>look at how good this game looks
But everything looks grey and boring, space engine is much better for looks
because it is
it is but the only new thing it does really is pretty (and empty) planets you can descend on
nothing to do on them
>MMO
>Where people have Lifetime, repeatable free replacements on a Titan equivalent ship
:)
>10 years later
>still in alpha
how retarded do you have to waste 125 dollaridoo on that crap ?
pretty retarded i have to admit. but i bought in when the stretch goal was $3 million when the scope was simple and the game was set to be released within a couple of years.
good man
Kek.
Just like real life

This a thousand times
>Close proximity ship to ship passes cause a large FPS stutter
>space game
>ships can't get near each other
Ummm sweetie, you pay for the privilege of being a NPC for the whales you know?
this but unironically
what
derek please
why don't you finish lod
because im waiting for linux port
One of the better goon memes I have seen desu
mother fucker do you know where you are?
>you don't dogfight with a capital.
i wanna join this guys squad
