I'd imagine sonic team would be hesitant about tarnishing one of the few 3D games that gets termed as passable but after forces they could probably do anything they wanted since forces proved there is no end to how bad they can make a sonic game.

Ok, you still have absurd loading times, a shitty overworld, needlessly drawn out mandatory side quests, stupid vehicle sections with Shadow, barely functioning physics engine with Silver, boring level design, the bosses weren't awful but they were underwhelming and uncreative, and the story was fucking stupid, even by Sonic standards. The whole game sits at just below average but it's the overwhelming glitches that gives it a legendary status. This game is fucking terrible no matter how you look at it. If by "potential" you mean rework the whole fucking game from the ground up then yeah, sure. You could also say that about any other fucking game.

The first four mainline Genesis games are pretty good. Maybe not great but they're definitely at least good. I also really enjoyed Spinball but I seem to be the odd man out with that one. Sonic CD was good, Chaotix was horrible, and pretty much everything afterwards is just not worth playing, until Mania.

I'll file that under "story" but yeah, it does deserve special attention. I know AVGN made a joke about this but even before then, I always found it fucking hilarious that the game shares the same name as the first game in the franchise. How do you fuck up so goddamn badly that you set out to make THE definitive Sonic game and you ended up making one of the worst games of a generation? Seriously, how do you miss the mark that bad? It's not even a disappointing game; it's just plain ass fucking bad as fuck.
