You should have played Fallout 1 first.
F1 gives you a gun and equipment and you just go.
F2 you have to struggle through the shitty Temple of Trials with spears and dogshit healing powder (THAT ABSOLUTELY DESTROYS YOUR PERCEPTION) and it's not until either the Den or knee-deep in the Klamath rat dungeon that you get an actual gun that's not the fucking pipe rifle.
I love F2 and it's one of my favorite games but the beginning of the game is absolute dog shit.

1 is a better paced game.
Plus it isn't full of pop culture references.

I had my priorities straight.

Nobody playing the game casually for the first time, blind, is going to run past all the enemies without fighting any of them.
This is an RPG. The initial thought is "oh I'll mop up all these enemies for easy XP" (which is exactly what you do in F1 as well) and you are a fucking FOOL if you think otherwise.

Slow in what way, the flow of the story? The combat? The progression? I can give you a few tips but whatever it is it's not weird that it feels slow if it's your first time playing.
Maybe you should start with a more modern isometric rpg like pillars or tyrrany before giving the classics a try.

you fight the enemies by hitting them, moving out of their range so they can't hit you, and repeating
if you decide to tank hits, healing powder isn't gonna save you

One-hander makes the temple of trials fairly easy without having to invest anything in melee because spears also benefit from the perk.

There’s two merchants in the third establishment, they have pistols and rifles and leather jackets(maybe) for sale, but you can take everything from their inventories after you kill them. They’re not strong, but will run if weakened enough
