Probably the most disappointing series I still consider myself a fan of.
I love Blood Omen, and to a lesser extent the first Soul Reaver, but after that the series loses all interest to me.
let it die old man, its better off
...
Fuck man I love these games. But not because they're games.
Try watching an all cutscenes video of them on youtube if you got the itch to go back, user
>Apparently I am.
KINO
This series has some of the best writing I've seen. I actually re watched the story recently.
BO1 is a legitimately great Zelda-style adventure game. Combat is clumsy and unbalanced in your favor, but it's satisfying and exploring itself is rich and tied into the story elegantly. SR1 isn't as successful, but it's still pretty fun to navigate.
The game design completely shits the bed with SR2. So does the story.
I unironically enjoyed the combat in the last three games tbqh
>Last 3
This includes Blood Omen 2, get help.
ITS A TIME TRAVELLING VAMPIRES STORY
IT SHOULDNT WORK BUT IT DOES
>Blood Omen 2
>Umah takes Kain to feed for the first time
>She gives him a story about her prisoner, and his food
>"Enough with the moral anecdote, and direct me to his throat"
god that's so fucking clever
There's also that fucking hilarious explosion scene at the Gondola.
oh my fucking god
I own all of the ones on Steam, and I beat Defiance. Replaying Bo2 actually.
You should just wear a trip at this point.
oh come on, don't tell me that you didn't enjoy seeing Kain hitting someone RIGHT into the groin area with a fuckin' mace
Kain is a fucking chad.
HUB OF THE WHEEL
I've seen a few others with this opinion.
The guy that always posts the pasta is a lot harder on SR1 than I am, though.
>I've seen a few others with this opinion.
No you haven't, any time you show up in a thread with a decent number of posters, you are told en masse to fuck off. Every time.
I feel the same, more or less.
Despite its flaws, the series still captivates.
He's talked about the fact that we didn't get our "proper Blood Omen" sequel before, I think. That or it could've been someone else.
That does happen, but it doesn't mean that other people hold concerns over the games. All-in-all though, this is something that people are passionate about, and personally cherish.
>The game design completely shits the bed with SR2
Care to elaborate? I thought the over-reliance on context sensitive objects almost became another version of SR's block puzzles, and the game was let down by being a lot more linear, but I didn't notice anything in SR2 that really put me off.
>So does the story.
Wait, what?
Maybe it's just me, having played SR1 first, then 2 before checking out BO, but I really liked having my belief that Kane was a villain challenged along with Raziel. Some things didn't make sense, like there being demons before SR, but not during it, and Janos knowing Raziel's name for some reason, buitt I didn't think those were big problems.
If anything I'd say BO2 is where the story shits the bed, as it sets up much worse questions, like why Vorador never appears in SR1, or how he was resurrected, why the Hylden have a specific anti-SR countermeasure, despite the sword not being made until after their banishment, and the sword never even being intended to contain Raziel, etc.
Shadowcon you fucking nigger I'm banning you from the Discord again
>No you haven't
I have. Either way, why do different opinions upset you so much?
see? Didn't take long.
And I do recall posting that it's a shame we didn't get a Vorador prequel more in line with BO1 that SK at one point suggested as a possibility, early on. That was at least a few months ago now though, if that's what you're referring to.
The lack of exploration is a big blow to the game when that was the one arena SR1 did so well, even if its rewards for it were less than essential (or even meaningful; the spells you can get have pretty limited usefulness).
As for the story: The dialogue was still great. But trading the first two games' eerie grotesqueness for college undergrad musings on fate (with the usual time travel shenanigans) isn't something I find compelling. Really, I wish SR1 had the ending originally intended for it and that it stopped there. It's not about plot coherence (the series holds up pretty well on that end, given its weird production history) so much as tone and theming. Given everything else though I've always liked Defiance's ending.
>trading the first two games' eerie grotesqueness for college undergrad musings on fate
Ok, I get where you're coming from. I suppose that playing SR1 then 2, I didn't find it quite as jarring as perhaps I would have if I'd started with BO.
>I wish SR1 had the ending originally intended for it and that it stopped there.
I think I'd be satisfied with that, not especially happy, but satisfied.
>Given everything else though I've always liked Defiance's ending.
I always assumed that it was setting up for another game where Kain would travel to the demon dimension to rescue Janos and find out how to repair the pillars, so the fact that we never got another game in the series retroactively sours it for me, but it was a great point at which to have left off.
Blood Omen is okay. Soul Reaver is great. Soul Reaver 2 is okay. Blood Omen 2 sucks. Defiance sucks.
There's shit that Defiance leaves up in the air (the Hylden, for example) but the central question of what's going on with the Elder God and how to stop his shit is given, and we see Raziel and Kain accept their roles. I think that's a pretty fitting ending. There's certainly room for another game, but by now there isn't much point to it.
It's possible I'm more accepting of where Defiance leaves the story because BO1 is my favorite LoK game and I'm not as attached to what came after, but I doubt I'm alone.
Lets all take a moment to appreciate something that didn't happen; Dead Sun and NOSGOTH.
i didn't even make this thread lmfao
here go fucking watch this as I post this in our server
everyone will die of cancer all at once

Yep, hello.
I felt considerably teased by Defiance with the cutscene of Raziel looking at a human mural of Vorador, especially because of the whole prequel thing that SK originally brought up. I also felt that BO1 did a really good job of painting the world of Nosgoth itself, with all the plentiful quirks that were brought up.
As for SR1, I too would've been satisfied with its original ending.
That way afterwards, there could've been different titles that would touch up on the concepts we'd see after SR1... with more creative flexibility of course. Considering how they had to accommodate for the overall narrative of the series, scenes and things were cut. I did like seeing how much Reaver variety we got in Defiance, because I think that all of those "glyphs" in SR1 should've just been spells for Reavers.
I think it would've been great if Kain could've shifted into the Demon Dimension, as a parallel to Raziel's "spectral realm".
Cool in concept, but I think it would've been squandered. The Spectral Realm was rarely that "important" in Defiance.
Aside from shifting for the sake of phasing through a few grates or manipulating some platforms, it's under-relied.
Even worse, they never made any special spectral soundtracks for Defiance either. Just some ambiance.
>It's possible I'm more accepting of where Defiance leaves the story because BO1 is my favorite LoK game and I'm not as attached to what came after, but I doubt I'm alone.
Correct, as I feel the same way.
