I'm not sure this failed but I wouldn't have called it a raging success either. Which sounds about right, I think they knew what this would achieve.
I do enjoy watching people here try to rep this game super hard though. I remember someone going nuts over it outselling SMASH BROS and FIRE EMBLEM like fuck I'd hope so.

I don't know how well it sold, but I liked it.
I still like the original Metroid II more, but I enjoyed Samus Returns quite a bit nonetheless.
