I think its really about effort for mainline Nintnedo games. They knew the Wii U was never going to be successful or had a cap on how much they could achieve, which is why games like Tennis ultra smash (Bare bones content), PM Color splash (reuse of assets ), and extent 3d world (un-original setting and style) all seemed to be underwhelming from previous series entries.

I'd just like to point out that even WiiU owners didn't stoop to defending the shovelware modern mario tennis games at any point. Every Mario Tennis game in the modern age has intentionally been released during empty spells in order to take advantage of faggots who are too antsy and impatient to wait for a good game to play.

M&L's combat is more varied. Also which story because both M&L and PM have stories with no character development. The first M&L had an unexpected twist whereas you could see where PM's plots where headed from a mile away.
