Mario 3 and Super Mario World got the exploration part right on the world map where secrets had an impact on the progression of the game. Was quite a step back for the way the did the very linear worlds in Yoshi's Island without much point to playing any earlier levels other than to get a better score.
Besides that its fine, and I don't get all the hate it gets now. There is an easy to find romhack that fixes the baby mario mechanic if that is what is holding you back from liking it.

i meant that YI levels are much larger and longer, and you often need to find keys to open some doors. There are a lot of secrets in World too, but they are totally optional, and you can just run straight ahead if you want

It probably took me 20 years to realize that you can control those moving blocks in SWM with the dpad. I would just fly through that one star world level where you're supposed to do that, and for the longest time would only get the exit in ghost house by Bowser through sheer luck.
