What was all the hate about?
I just beat the PS4 version and I can't see why people hated this when it first came out. Sure the combat system made the game far too easy and I almost never had to use strategy for beating my enemies but the story and everything else was good. I have no major complaints and I enjoyed every second of it.
tried to pull off being a faux-MMORPG lite in a time when FF fans still clinged to the turn based tradition. Nevermind the combat system, some of the sidequests, especially the hunts felt forced down your throat. still an improvement over FF X's linear hallway style map (which itself was far better than what XIII had to offer later on)
took the IZJS edition to convince me it wasn't all that bad, if only for the speed up button, and the introduction of actual jobs.

This is the biggest problem with IZJS/TZA. They introduced basically and entirely new system and it changed nothing.

I'm not even a big FF fan but I never read reviews / opinions on FF games, I just play them. FF fandom is like the worse of Sup Forums and Sup Forums combined. My top 3 FF are XII, VI and XIII.

No wonder this game is shit. Never played it and this is my first time playing XII.
I can't believe they made Vaan the main character instead of Basch or Ashe because of Japs disliking manly characters like Basch.
Personally, the movie style combat, Vaan and Penelo, and side quests that are only combat in a game with the shittiest combat are the main reasons I disliked the game. Also wish it had more Cid in it. Sad that it is one of my least favorite FF's when it is based on Ivalice and FFT is my GOAT.

Just have "self: libra" as a gambit on one of your active party members. Got platinum, and stopped updating my gambits half way through the game, until a couple of the last optional fights where I had to retool for reverse

The PS4 version makes all the walking and waiting more tolerable with the 4x speed button so I didn't get bored with it like the PS2 version

It played terribly slowly, the combat system was a complete change from all the previous FF titles (and wasn't any good on its own merits), and it took ages to get to any decent story/character plots.
It's a good game, but not a good Final Fantasy. We'd just come off the high of having FF9/FFX/FF11, all of which were fantastic. 12 was a huge letdown.

yes and it only serves my point. a lot of the negativity about the game surfaced months after the game was out and it was unanimously praised. As I said: FFfandom is plagued by meme (mimetic) opinions. Like Vaan; it's obvious why Vaan is a brilliant protagonist: you can't have an open world game were you can go anywhere and have a story bound protagonist *coughs* Noctis *coughs*. But obsessive memers just talk shit "How about Basch". Yes Basch would HAVE been the protagonist in a linear game. Another example: "IX is the patrician choice" yes it's an excellent -albeit slow- game but the truth is MOST people can't fucking relate to anthropomorphic creatures.

Is combat any better is the remake? I know they revamped some mechanics from the original NA release
XIII was objectively trash though, it's not even a debate. The sequels improved drastically upon the original, but that in no way should relegate it to your "top 3". It's not a meme. It was genuinely trash.

I played it on release when I was 12 and I remember enjoying it a lot. Other than the romance I remember it fondly.
It was 3 console generations ago and I was young. Can you remind me of the flaw(s) of that game and why it's so hated?
I would enjoy 12 now because of how fucking bad we got it with 13. Also an issue with 12 was the side lined main character, but after the fact he does become a bad ass in FFTA2 of all games, I've accepted it.

The bit in the middle is a 7-day week, user.
It's a lot easier now that the debuffs actually work on the bosses and we have a 4x speed button but it's the same old MMO gameplay otherwise
