Spells are the same as existing abilities and FOTS naval bombardment.
Flying is new, though handled very poorly.
Sieges have been simplified beyond Medieval 1.
Maps horrifically simplified as well, all the fire effects from Attila are gone in a setting where they could be incredible. Attila's superb fog of war also cut, in a setting where you have a ton of deep-striking units that could be an absolute joy to use with it.
Corruption is just religion/culture with more drastic effects but simplified management.

I didn't know naval bombardements were vortexes that cost mana, could be overcast and trapped units in a gravity well. I also didn't know there were abilities that let you summon units in previous games, let alone giant cyclops who throw rocks.

You need to apply just a little bit of thought and you'll see that none of those things are new beyond adding a few meshes and textures and animations to the game.

Total Warhammer was disappointing. Total Warhammer 2 is a step in the right direction, but still falls short of Shogun 2, Attila and the possibilities of Medieval 2 modding.
They're still good games in spite of this. But they could've been so much better.

Shock cavalry is only used for quick strikes. If you keep them stuck in melee you'll lose. Unless you use cavalry intended for fighting. There are different types of cavalry user.

i always take them out from melee after a charge so they can charge in again or charge another unit.

how are you meant to use your lords? as aura sluts? make them sit back and cast all of the spells? use them as wrecking balls?

I haven't checked but there are a ton of mod that pretty much allows you to start as any subfaction in the game

They will almost always lose a sustained fight against a somewhat equivalent or even inferior infantry unit because they will always be outnumbered 3 to 1 (sometime 2 to 1 against elite infantry but that's even worse)
