I like video games that aren't explicitly sad. Like, main characters dying in some tragic scenes is an example. It just feels a bit forced, even if it can be effective.
Something like Shadow of the Colossus is nice. It's not really shoved in your face, but instead the sadness is implied throughout the game and only really hits you at the end.
Killing the colossi is really exciting and satisfying, but the music is very quiet and almost melancholic. I mean, they aren't evil creatures.
The ending were you seen what become of their corpses presumably decades later was pretty sad to me. Not because I felt like a monster or anything, but seeing them in such a sorry state definitely resonated with me. Good shit.

I’d say emulate it. Gameplay isn’t really great but the atmosphere and setting really do things for me.
