Elite Dangerous

Elite: Dull

Freel- oh wait, you already played the only good space game.

you posted i-war in your OP meaning your taste is already more patrician than 99.9% of this board, there are no good recs to give you

Shattered Horizon was 10/10. Don't know if there are still players now.

>X3 Terran Conflict/Albion Prelude, preferably with Litcube's Universe mod
Deep space sim with plenty to do and a tight focus on economics/trading. You can still do general space sim missions like bounty hunting, policing, mining etc but the game really shines when you decide to start your own company, make a few factories and get a space trucking company going.

>Independence War 2
Great space sim with more focus on combat and an incredible atmosphere as well as consistent story throughout. Great flight model an all round overlooked gem

>Freelancer
Same as above but with more emphasis on freedom

>Freespace 1/2
Get FS2Open for this. Absolute gem of a game but all about combat and linear mission fashion.

>Space Rangers 2
Get this on GOG. Russkie gem and a whole mish mash of genres from RTS, to turn based to text adventure. This game is great.

>Master of Orion 2
One of the original 4x space sims that every other space sim is essentially based on. Imo still hasn't been outdone today and the 90s graphics and music are a real charm.

>Homeworld 1/2
Goat space RTS with emphasis on story and 3d movement

>Sins of a Solar Empire
Space rts/4x hybrid, good stuff.

These are just some games off the top of my head. There's countless more

That's Freelancer m80

OP, everything is set in space. Earth is also in space.

fucking Freelancer. I'm consistently amazed no one has made just a newer version of that. They try to expand it into utter bullshit and lose the feel the original had.

We need a fucking Freelancer 2 why not.

I'd add Rebel Galaxy to that as well. If 2D doesn't bother you and you aren't looking to fly a spaceship then you could also try
Heat Signature.

Another one would be Everspace, if you haven't played then you should try Strike Suit Zero.

Finally, another 2D game : Space Pirates and Zombies, or try its sequel (which is 3D now). Same name only add a 2 at the end.

...

>mfw love space games but haven't played Freelancer yet, just have it installed am saving it for a rainy day

Well there's always the Discovery mod and its server, they're constantly adding new features to it.

not sure if bait

Elite Dangerous

Its a dead boring grind game but its highly spess and if you're autistic enough you can immerse yourself pretty well.

Colony Wars 1-3.

The devs pander to dad fags too much

This is true.

FTL Faster Than Light is fun and quick if you don't turn into a rage goblin when "screwed by rng"
Stellaris is okay too even though it loses steam as you get further in and it's just 2-3 mega-federation hugboxes. Fun to roleplay in with the ethics and such.

If you've already played that, you've already played the best. Sadly. Independence War 2 is the only other game I can offer you.

Freespace 2.

Best mission based space game.

>>Homeworld 1/2
Poor Cataclysm

Get married, have a kid and they will pander to you as well. Try not to remain a virgin forever, there is no magic past 30.

See, why can't more space games learn from this ancient example? Freelancer makes space _interesting_. It may not be realistic, but navigating nebula filled with debris and giant (creepy) ice crystals, discovering forgotten gates and wormholes, entering systems where even your scanners can't see a foot infront of your cockpit, Freelancer is filled with space that was interesting to interact with and compelling to find.

I haven't played Rebel Galaxy but heard good things about it.
Also another few I just remembered

>FTL: Faster Than Light
By now everyone's played this to death but great little roguelike and a timesink

>Starsector
Basically Mount and Blade in space. Plenty of mods and is constantly worked on. Great stuff.

>Evochron Legacy
Attempts to be a more realistic Elite. Flight model is very realistic with its portrayal of newtonian physics. You can land on planets and the universe is huge. It's made by one guy so don't expect production values to be through the roof but he's been making the same game for years and years so he's got it down by now. Play the demo to death before buying it since it might not be your thing.

>Nexus the Jupiter Incident
RTT in space. Great game and very underrated.

>Galactic Civilizations 2
Basically Master of Orion 2 updated with very little charm imo but great mechanically. I'm not a big fan but everyone else seems to love this game.

Although it's not set in space but rather on a planet I'd recommend Alpha Centauri all the same. Excellent game.
This game is great. Can't recommend it enough to op.
youtube.com/watch?v=23VLS11mAqo

Sorry user, I forgot. Cataclysm is great and well worth your time though. Imo better than 2.

What a fantastic game that no one will have the chance to play again.

There was no magic past 10, mother fucker.

Stellaris is ok, but I feel it is still missing so much. Espionage is non existent, diplomacy still sucks and rather controlling an interstellar nation I feel like I am controlling drones. Oh yes combat is stupid too.

It's sold on gog right now, they renamed it though

gog.com/game/homeworld_emergence

Maybe you'd prefer to pander to babbies like No Man's Sky does?

>gog.com/game/homeworld_emergence

No, it already panders to babbies by pandering to the dads. The world feels dead even in the bubble. The most excitement I had was almost dying in a star.

>dad fags

hahahahahahaha it's funny because it's true

If you dig Battlestar Galactica the Diaspora Shattered Armistice is a fun few missions with Vipers and Raptors. Also it's free. Just remember to go into the settings and map the key that lets you glide with Newtonian physics, can't remember what it's called though.

Freespace 2 and then the Diaspora mod.

One of many excellent mods. Like I've suggested already get FS2Open op. It'll make installing all this shit easy as fuck.

youtube.com/watch?v=KLlwfYwKBm0

Best one with cockpit view and Trackir/freetrack/opentrack support?

Just as a side note: Diaspora is standalone so there is no need to install FreeSpace open but you should anyway because Freespace 1 and 2 are the best space Sims ever created. Come at me with freelancer and I will cut you.

Freespace 2

>Now, we live in the mausoleum of history. We inherit the legacy of ghosts who haunt these ruins. The elders call us the Lost Generation. I remember stories of a glorious civilization. Of cities with spires that reached the sun. And a Blue Planet with vast seas. Of people with myths of humanity everlasting. Of children who saw in the embers of dying stars, the destiny of their race. And they hurled themselves into the void of space with no fear. They say our people have no present, only a past filled with horror. And a future they can only dream of. Now, we forge a new alliance to guard the tomb of space, and to find within its cold expanse, the salvation of our race.

Especially
youtube.com/watch?v=HoAJ_ibAAsY

Oh fuck yeah Colony Wars was awesome as a kid. Had a cool story line and branching paths and shit. Don't know how well it holds up now though but I think it's worth a shot on an emulator.

I like both, they excel at different things.

>that mission in subspace
youtube.com/watch?v=Mh3nehcI3Jo
Fuck me this hit hard first time playing.
>that everything

>those low poly graphics
Love it

X3:AP is pretty good

But at like 100 hours in you'll still feel like you're just barely getting to know how it works

It needs a lot of playtime.

Do you think X4 will be good? Will the devs actually be sincere in trying to gain their fanbase back or will they back stab us again?

If you like Anime and DS games give Infinite Space a shot. It's kinda like if Freelancer was a jrpg.

Seeing as the reception of X: Rebirth was so abysmal, I'm sure they'll learn a thing or two about sticking to the original formula and improving on that.

They claim they have. Only time will tell ... at least they didn't totally give up on Rebirth and tried to make it better. I guess that's a good sign?

That's a very good sign. The core gameplay of X Rebirth was flawed but the new patches really improved it. It's obvious Egosoft cares about their games. They tried something new and it didn't work out, so now their most profitable option would be to go back to the original formula. I have faith in these people.

Stellaris - a more accessible grand strategy
Sins of a Solar Empire Rebellion - good combat in a 4x game!
Rebel Galaxy - Black Flag style ship battles set in a western themed space
Space Engineers - building ships and them smashing them together was a lot of fun. A ton of shit has been added since I last played.

House of The Dying Sun is pretty good.

>tfw Cherryh update
It's like the way the game should have been at release.

Starsector, it's 2D mountain blade in space, update speed is glacial but the (one) developer is very passionate and dedicated and has been working on it for nearly a decade now. Just like mountain blade, there's a very active mod community with tons of different shit.

0.9 update should be out relatively soon (within Q1 I imagine), so I would advice waiting until then

Not OP, but I've been meaning to give this a try since forever yet for some reason I always forget this exists.

Star Control 2. There is a HD remake for it that's free and also there was announcement in October that it will be getting a direct sequel by the original creators after 25 years so do yourself a favor and play it now.

Remember when he wasn't a scammer and actually made games?

>Star Control 2
x100 this. Ur Quan Masters is the remake you're looking for. Wonderful game full of 90s charm.

When I learned that you can toggle route paths on in the freelancer math, I was really surprised to see routes going out into nowhere for no reason. Then I went out there and discovered that there was STUFF out there. Bandit bases, hidden jumpholes and all kinds of cool stuff.

The sheer amount of things you can go out and discover by yourself in Freelancer is really, really cool. Finding the Hispania, for example. It's not part of a quest, you don't get a big flashing "hey well done you found this" thing, just you find it, put 2 and 2 together and realise what happened, and it's really neat. The majority of stuff to do in Freelancer is off the beaten path.

What do you mean? I can't wait for my great grandchildren to play squadron 42 and star citizen!

If he can keep the funding going for that long I suppose that's a possibility, but I don't have faith that he's going to be able to continue to sucker millions from his fans in the long-term.

t.salty Crytek rep

Shit game, there's fucking nothing to do.

Finding the Hispania was a delight that made perfect sense in the world and properly alluded to. And the fact that you don't get 30 achievos and a bit flashing OBJECTIVE COMPLETE +500XP added to the moment.

>galaxy-scale game made by algorithms
>boring, empty, and soulless
When will devs learn?

Too late for me anyway, turning 29 this year and still one.

Oh yeah, why did they change the name from enemy Starfighter?

pretty soon you'll be able to play the most amazing space game ever, Star Citizen!

I don't know but I imagine they just wanted a less generic title. Enemy Starfighter sound like a working title.

Ya, but I still had a lot of fun with it.

Pretty much everything has been named ITT. I'll throw in 3030 Deathwar. It's a fun 2D game with similarities to Freelancer.

Starsector is pretty good except that its been in development for fucking ever.
I'd describe it as Mount and Blade in space with a touch of Star Control 2, with combat that is a mix of Asteroids and Mechwarrior. You start out as a scrub with a couple of frigates and eventually work your way to having a goddamned space navy complete with battleships, cruisers, and carriers. It still needs some work when it comes to an actual endgame, but there are mods that can help with that. There is also a planetary colonization update coming which should be pretty interesting.

We will be able to send user to space before star citizen releases

Is Cherryh releasing alongside Apocalypse?

wish there was a game where you could build your own spacestation in bumfucknowhere and have it look like that.

>spend 8 years trying to get the fucking launcher to work
>It's just X3 but with less things to do

Fuck off

>Apocalypse bringing in Titan-class ships and Death Stars
>Will likely buff Crises to close the power gap
We can't have our space cake and eat it, can we?

Rebel Galaxy's difficulty curve is pure ass. Fighting ships with gear up to one tier higher than yours is trivial, and defeating anything two or more tiers higher is essentially impossible, since their shield regen outpaces your best-case damage. So you can't really take on more risk for greater rewards, you're locked into a piss-easy grindfest. And you're not grinding for cool new gear, either, just upgraded versions of the old gear, with which you'll mostly be fighting identically-upgraded enemy ships.

Yep.

If you have four friends Pulsar is a lot of fun. Really makes you feel like you need to do your job to keep the ship functioning. Not much content but once the game is finished itll be amazing

The X-wing, Tie fighter and X-wing alliance games are all great as long as you can handle how bullshit the difficulty can be at times.
Freespace 1 and 2 are both a lot of fun

I like Artemis for this reason.

>i-war
you subhuman degenerate, that's fucking freelancer

I remember searching outer systems for remains of Freeport 7, using color and positioning of stars seen in cutscene. Eventually found wrecked station in the right place.
Loved that someone bothered to put it there, since cutscene didn't even take place in playable space, but in special system made solely for it.

>no jumpgate between Texas and California
>search for place where one should be
>there's highly corrosive cloud and massive construction debris there
>dead ships likely caught in accident that took out jumpgate

Why make this thread? Freelancer 2 is the best space game.

I don't see Nexus: The Jupiter Incident on your goddamned list, man.
