Has Cliffy showed his face after Lawbreakers flopped? I wonder if he'll still be the same smug asshole he was before!

Lawbreakers or Battleborn?

...

At least it had gender-neutral bathrooms.

Hey, at least it's not a well-known established franchise flopping.

And not the past we envision.

Can someone give me a run down on what happened? I was in prison when it finally released.

Cliffy returned from retirement to make another billion dollar franchise. It failed. Watch this if you're interested: youtube.com/watch?v=wJ4v2LgVlEA

what did you do? are you
a lawbreaker?

They thought they could compete with Blizzard.
When the game released they had a few thousand players. Then they panicked and hastily casualized the game in some patches, removing or changing everything that was good or unique about it. They turned the game to such a piece of shit that even its core playerbase left.

>Lawbreakers gets released.
>Lawbreakers has a pretty small player count to start.
>Within a week people are struggling to find games.
>It is now so underpopulated that the game is unplayable
Even Battleborn did better.

Looooool

The ugly black chick isn't a good girl mascot compared to Tracer. Having a bathroom sign as a selling point repulsed me. Just way better shooters out there.

Quake Champions didn’t deserve to fail. It’s a perfectly serviceable shooter.

Though it is purely their fault for trying to enter a saturated market like hero shooters. There’s just no more room between TF2, Overwatch and Paladins.

Clifford Bleszinski founded a new game studio from the ground up with his personal fortune and pitched his competitive PC/PS4 FPS game concept to Nexon, who agreed to fund it.

Development and advertising costs ran pretty high, into the tens of millions range. The game sucked and it flopped extremely hard; the PC playerbase was essentially nonexistent in weeks. Nexon publicly wrote the entire project off as a total loss within just a few months. Even with a liberal estimate of revenue, the game earned back just a miniscule fraction of what it cost to make and market. Sup Forums has been having a field day because I guess Cliffy B is kind of a fucker.

If you watched their report on closing down the game's support, he blamed PUBG for it's failure

>he
Nexon did that, not Cliffy. They had to give some sort of excuse to investors.

Don't forget Cliff tried to sell this shit to other bigger fish like valve and got turned down every time until fucking nexon of all options agreed

>only 3 games is enough to oversaturate market
Worst timeline

>Don't forget Cliff tried to sell this shit to other bigger fish like valve and got turned down every time
You'd think that's a good warning sign that your project is unlikely to succeed.

Can't I play battleborn for free

Well, the veterans that have been playing TF2 for ten years aren’t gonna change. For the normie mass audience there’s Overwatch, and they ain’t changing either because Overwatch has everything they demand from a shooter. For those that can’t afford Overwatch, there’s Paladins which is free.

So yeah, what audience would Quake appeal to? Or Lawbreakers, for that matter? They tried to do the “our players are the HARDCORE players”, but if you’re so good at shooters you’re probably not playing hero shooters anyways.

IT'S ONLY A FREE TRIAL!!!

>that even its core playerbase left.
Yeah, all ten of them...

IM SHAKINN

They've probably made their money back from console sales

Exactly
At least it used to have enough players to actually start a game
Not any more

Its an online multiplayer game with only 1 major update, thats really not that much money, probably at most a million, which isn't that much of a loss for Cliffy considering he made money off VR.

$39.99 none of that $60 multiplayer only bullshit

kinda feel bad for all the behind the scenes people working on this artists, 3d etc who now have this disaster on their resume.

still in paid EA , it will fill up when it goes 1.0 F2P ..the real question is will it retain those players or will they wash out and go back to Sloverwatch or PUBfortress ?

that sort of have been always the case with multiplayer games. there's always few popular titles per genre that most people play.

And the irony is that Lawbreakers really is the most advanced multiplayer shooter this generation with the highest skill-ceiling by a country mile.

But that type of stuff doesn't work in today's market. People don't give a shit about skill, they want to have fun. And Lawbreakers is extremely difficult not only to get good at, but to just have a casual play of. At launch the game didn't have any deathwatch or team deathwatch modes; it was extremely focused on competitive team play. And it had an extremely low time to kill (you'd die very fast) and a ten second respawn timer. It just didn't have any Mass appeal whatsoever.

And people like to say that the character designs were simultainiously too generic and too pandering to diversity.

It's more of a recent thing, and usually just on PC. Before the whole "PC master race" thing started, plenty of different multiplayer games had ~1000 consistent players, same with consoles. Now we're stuck with a bunch of console migrants who only play whatever the flavor of the month is.

This guy always looked like such a douchebag

>Imagine how much money was wasted on developing this game.
Not really much by industry standards, I assure you. Now Paragon was painful.

>make a new quake
>turn it into a hero shooter
if they would have just had a classic mode it would have sold more

>People don't give a shit about skill, they want to have fun. And Lawbreakers is extremely difficult not only to get good at, but to just have a casual play of.
This is why every Arena shooter revival has failed. They focus too much on hardcore Duels for the people who have been playing Q3A for the past 20 years, and not on actually trying to pull in new players.

Battleborn, its more fun to watch at least, like watching a retarded kid trying to play chess
Lawbreakers on the other hand, its like a 90 year old man being yelled by its half black great grandson for being an asshole, its sad and it should not exist

Does the fag on the right rocket jump with a rifle?

To be fair, that doesn't include players using the Bethesda Launcher, which I'd imagine is a decent portion of the player base. Still, overall it's not a lot. I had beta access so I am included in the EA, and while I don't usually have trouble finding matches, I do see the same players more than I would in other games.

wat?

Everyone would basically only play CS 1.6 or BF 1942 for the longest time. Before that everyone played Quake. Before that it was DOOM.

You could say the same for RTS games too.

kek

It was out already?

If he funded his own studio himself, why did he need Nexon?

He fOUnded the studio, the fUnding came from Nexon.

>Clifford Bleszinski founded a new game studio from the ground up with his personal fortune

This sounds like he funded it.

>it was extremely focused on competitive team play
What, really? When has that EVER worked out of the gate?

>Has Cliffy showed his face after Lawbreakers flopped?
He hasnt said anything to the press since september, when he said "I have to keep this game alive" to gamespot.
Since then he has been mostly quiet on twitter about lawbreakers
The developer's studio has not released any info about the game for more than 1 month
Its last update was "We will be canceling the next map and character release while we talk to nexon about investing more time/money on the game to get more players"
3 days later nexon declared lawbreakers a 30 million dollar loss and said to their investors they were not gonna burn more money into the game

Cliffy decided edgy "realistic characters" blood and guts faggotry with gender-neutral bathrooms would appeal more to internet faggots than moe waifu fapbait would.

He was wrong.

All the dosh he made investing in Occulus Rift, vanished. It's like pottery.

Sure it did, it didn't have a market. Competitive Quake 3 players will just keep playing 3/Live, and the people who want a hero shooter will just play Overwatch. Other than that mass audiences don't like arena shooters anymore.

...

Ew this guy thinks Pacific rim 2 doesn't look terrible? Jesus no wonder his game flopped

He should be in prison.

YOU WILL BE ASHAMED OF YOUR WORDS AND DEEDS - Clifford Bleszinski

He has a point. Even though CS and Battlefield usually held up the larger masses, there were multiple smaller games flourishing.
I remember playing a shitload of free source mods and smaller source games back in the day. HL2 DM, Zombie Panic Source, Insurgency, Day of Defeat.

All those had sufficiently large playerbases. Now all (except insurgency, which became a paid game) are borderline dead.
There are fewer games on playable state today

...

...

I got 200 hours of it. The game was fine. While objective based it was very much a deathmatch type of a game with everyone having high mobility and being able to boost themselves and carry momentum around by jumping and dashing around. There was some UT "pros" around too but they all pretty much left after introducing the ""competitive"" matchmaking which fucked up the queue times and made soloqueuing unbearable for the top 5 or so players. And yea someones gonna make a joke about "haHAA top 5 out of 10 players lol" but it had like 200 people playing the game just during timezones etc and it was actually cool being able to recognize each other and you would remember if someone was really good. And a good player would be much greater impact than in lets play Overwatch and its mostly about your own movement, aim and positioning and not depending on your teammates using ults for you.

Few years ago we had quite a few arena shooter clones too but as expected they all died and while people even here wanna cry about how h4rdc0r3 they are they probably never even gave them a try. Lawbreakers was atleast a bit more casual but it still had a lot of people crying about "cheaters" and such. And everyone not interested in fps games never gave a fuck because it doesnt look bright enough with cute characters.

I honestly get where he's coming from with that sentiment, but a featureset, no matter how robust or technically worthwhile, means nothing if it isn't presented or experienced in a way that makes people happy. People would rather play something flawed if it excites them or welcomes their interest. Lawbreakers didn't do that because it was ugly and boring.

> paladins > lawbreakers
That's like saying bubonic plague is better than ebola.
t. former Paladins player.

Yea he is wrong in the sense that he is trying to quilt trip people but he is right in what he is saying
>the game had physics based movement
>different ways to boost yourself on different classes
>game modes I've not seen before
>higher tickrate than in csgo 64 tick
>I got 140 fp son GTX970 and game still looked good
>different types of weapons and combat based around aiming
>lost of verticality
>30$ at launch

Yes, he founded the studio which costs money. Things like registering the company, locating office space, hiring staff. That all costs money to set up.

Then getting the funding to actually produce a game is another matter and much more expensive. But you need the studio to exist to give investors a reason to fund a project.

The game didn’t suck, it was pretty damn fun if you actually put any time in it. The games character design was awful and it came out in a post over watch market. Along with cliffy b’s smugness it drew all the wrong kinds of attention and got shit posted to death.

This is a much, much more efficient PR for the demographic he is pretending to appeal to. Take notes cliffy: no overplaying, overacting, or unnecessary overhyping. There are still a few things you can reproach this. A number of those "votes", are fallacious interpretation of non-action, which makes people who notice it bristle at the attempted manipulation. Additionally, the game's optimisation was absolutely atrocious during the beta. It was so bad several friends who were eager to try it out had to call it quits because they kept crashing and freezing. I did too, but I stuck with it because I wanted to play it.

But the fact is that you can't downplay the human factor either. What marketing I came across for this game was abominable. It felt like it was simultaneously trying to appeal to underage h4arc0r35 who were still discovering leet speak and progressive loudmouths which were never gonna play this kind of game to begin with. It completely missed the mark.

It is never a good idea to try and capitalize on current movements for your game marketing unless you actually are trying to make a point with the story. All it achieves is make you look like an opportunist or a bandwagoner regardless of what the message is. Most people don't give a shit about gay marriage, and yet it's easy to find people outraged for gay reveals. And no, the character design wasn't good. It was atrocious, actually. This is why you don't frontload this stuff. You want to put it, go ahead, but try to make a selling point out of it and you'll be recognized for the twat you are. DB of all things handled everything better on both those fronts.

Sad to see it crash and burn, but not surprised. People don't play games in which it takes time and skill to be decent, let alone good, anymore. Furthermore, the "hero" shooter market is completely oversaturated, making it even more difficult to gather the bulk they needed to survive. There was never going to be enough people to play this.

i don't believe Clify wrote this, he's too busy getting in second place in a one player match

I feel like this is mostly in part because games were allowed to have small player bases. Now everyone’s frothing at the mouth over steam charts statistics and calling any game that doesn’t reach at least 20k plus concurrent dead. Which is ridiculous since if a game takes 20 people to play and has 1500 concurrent constantly, what about it is dead? So new game after new game comes out and everyone circle jerks about it being a flop and posts steam charts numbers. Then the overwhelming negativity and shitposting overrides anyone’s actual interest since the narrative has made the game out to be trash.

And this shit will keep going on until there is only one monolithic game for each genre and it’s going to fucking suck.

Also Cliff's old friend from Epic and co-founder of Boss Key left the studio in December to rejoin Epic to work on a "secret project"

he needs to grow a pair if he wants to keep being an asshole.

Paladins is pretty P2W now which is a shame

>And it had an extremely low time to kill (you'd die very fast) and a ten second respawn timer.

Overwatch does too but it disguises the respawn by just forcing you to walk long distances.

Well Overwatch is like Path of Exile. The game has so much heals that it is balanced around you dying in instants. Damage boosts, damage amps, headshots for double damage, scatter arrow, stuns and all that bullshit. In Lawbreakers you could NEVER die to a oneshot. And they actually made time to kill longer by buffing everyones hp a bit because players with good aim would be able to kill each other way too fast. Of course this triggered outcry from all the shitters in the community because now they could never get those lucky half a second kills anymore and good players had enough time to react and reposition themselves.

this game is irredeemable dead at this point
or is there is still a .00000001% chance of normie alien retards picking this up?
maybe if they find it exists somehow

Nah, at this point the game population is so slow there aren't even enough active players in a day to fill a single game lobby. Unless you've got a magic wand or some genius marketing strategy, I don't know how you'd convince a large group of people to suddenly pick up and start playing a game so dead it's literally unplayable atm.

>"don't be a dick"
>t. cliffy
how the tables have turned

Nah. The game has fallen into a terrible cycle where there aren't enough players to start a match which in turn causes less people to play which in turn further decreases chances of finding a match. People will bombard the Steam review section with reviews saying they can't play the game and to steer clear, which in turn leads to less people buying it (those that do will sit at the matchmaking screen for 45 minutes then refund the game)

...

Imagine how much time was wasted posting about this game. All for nothing.

Will Sup Forums post anything else after Lawbreakers flopped? I wonder if it'll be the same gay thread it was before!

>look him up on Wikipedia
>different wife now
Marriage, not even once.

I mean, there are almost no nu-wolfenstein threads, despite fags like you saying we would shit up the game forever

He's not wrong. I'm not sad for Cliffy because he's a faggot, but these devs have this failure of a game in their portfolio now. The game wasn't bad on the development side, it was just badly designed and most importantly, not fun.

>using Cliffy, of all people, and his band of gold-digging whores as a measurement for the success of marriage

Not a strong point. You're better off sticking with divorce stats if you want to entrench yourself in bitterness towards women.

Nobody expects to make a single dime for posting on Sup Forums. I would say that most people's expectations were met when posting about this game, since it's done purely for entertainemnt purposes.

>I would say that most people's expectations were met when posting about this game, since it's done purely for entertainemnt purposes.
Shitposting should be a national sport.

I hope Nexon knows now that supporting liberals means that the game will flop and badly.

I hope they don't censor their 2 upcoming games.

>Shitposting should be a national sport.
it isn't? it's not like Reddit doesn't compete with us on that already.

What's a right-wing game like? Something like Battlefront 2 with content locked behind lootboxes that players must pay extra for?

Well, games about memes are the most successful.
