I think the reason is that games nowadays are a pure cash cow for studies. Its a pump and dump scheme with annual releases of almost the same games - there is no innovation anymore. No studio takes the time to develop its own groundbreaking engine to push technology forward.
It may not have the best graphics anymore but the source engine is literally still one of the best out there when it comes to smooth gameplay and physics.

I don't see how the two even compare. DOOM 3 feels like a standard early 2000's shooter. HL2 was ahead of its time, and set the new standard for FPS games.
