Tekken 7 was the most disappointing Tekken game I've ever played, even worse than Tekken 4. Harada barely supports the game, charges me for shit that should be free and releases guest characters no one wants, all the while focusing on e sports.
I'm looking to convert. I suck at 2D fighters so I'm wondering if there's one out there that's easier to get into than the rest. I'd wait until Soul Calibur 6 but I want to play something in the mean time.
Just buy DBFZ, it's the fighting game with the highest score on Metacritic and also sold the highest number of copies for any fighting game.

Fighting games are trash. That's my conclusion after playing them for almost 1000 hours now. Spend your life doing better things. This entire genre boils down to how much a desire you have to prove yourself superior than someone else. If you don't have that urge, you'll never enjoy fighting games.
Not him but to me those instant one button armor Super Attacks just ruined the game for me. That shit is not Tekken. Tekken was always semi-grounded but now it's full blown 2D anime complete with supers and all that shit. Harada is a fraud and needs to step down. They need a proper game director in charge of Tekken not just some guy that reads his twitter feed for new characters.
As I stated in the OP, it's because Harada had three years after the arcade release to make this the best Tekken yet. Instead, he ends up charging for bikinis (obviously disc locked content) and Tekken Bowl, which was free in a previous game. On top of that, the story is the worst in the entire series. One fight for characters who aren't Mishimas followed by a half assed in-game cutscene. Even if characters got more fleshed out endings, the story itself is pants-on-head retarded. Kazumi is a walking plot hole and the fact that the entire thing is an excuse to white wash Heihachi (Harada's favorite character) makes me seethe.
All in all, the offline content is barebones, Tekken 2 had more content on release than this shit. Moving on from that, the online is a joke, lobbies are a joke, tournament mode is a farce, and it takes entirely too long to get matched up.
Also, Harada caved in way too much to the e sports crowd. Tekken 4 was less shit than this game.
Tekken 4 was way underrated. Atleast that game was fun to play with friends. Back when Tekken atleast tried to be somewhat grounded and not full blown shounen.

It wasn't until Tekken 6 when it became just too fucking Japanese for its own good. Lars and Alisa became that paradigm shift for Tekken direction. And you can tell those were hack Harada's doings.

But it's the best Tekken since 5 in terms of gameplay. It's not Harada's fault that you only enjoy playing vs brainless bots in some silly custom mode.
Rage arts were a fine addition to the game, but they should revisit them balance-wise. Some character's rage drives are just too good, and some character's rage arts are completely useless.

SF5 and DBFZ are the two most active 2d fighters atm. Both pretty different, pick which fits your style more.

Nigger Tekken had wood robots and boxing dinosaurs and the gameplay was about defying gravity by keeping people airborne by punching them. It was never remotely grounded.

these are easily punishable. Just don't blindly attack and block. most players use the EX moves for combos

I like them fine. They are easy to block and avoid and you can stuff an idiot doing them as a last resort if you hit em hard enough.
