In short, you need a copy of Splinter Cell, Mech Assault or 007 Agent Under Fire, an Xbox to female USB adapter (see pic) and a rather old USB stick (2GB or smaller).

Not necessarily, I hacked an Xbox last month. You can find those games at most second hand shops, and if not I'm sure you can find it on Lukiegames for cheap. The only issue might be the USB stick, I had to order one from ebay and it took a month and a half to deliver.

To hack even today it's a really good cheap emulation station

Because it can't play the full library, is region locked, and the backwards compatibility fucks with a lot of games.

360 doesn't have full support, and some games have issues (JSRF for example)
It's really not that hard, and it's maybe $30 of supplies.

you need an internet connection to play original xbox games on the 360, there's an update that activates backwards compatibility. also the 360 controller doesn't have the black and white buttons, they were transferred to the bumpers, which is awkward and confusing in certain games
