I don't think it was ever supposed to be a gritty game, if Dying Light tells us anything it was supposed to be more ridiculous but got toned down to be more like the trailer.
It reeks of some higher-up or investor seeing some gameplay and then filling in the blanks themselves.

honestly FUCK TEW2, i loved the first game so much, but the twist with the 'main bad guy' not being the main bad guy and that stupid vicar cunt [spoiler/] was so dumb. i was so invested in first half. also no ruvik so fuck them harder.
