Looks like a cheap maplestory knockoff. Not terrible but wouldn't spend more than 10 bucks on it.

You should tell him to remove the sonic feet effect. It's not nearly fast enough for that to look good

Main Dev here. 1) What is maplestory? 2)The game is still in Alpha with this being one of the early builds. 3) I'm no furry. 4) It's meant to look cartoony. Sonic doesn't own that effect. Keep the input coming.

Game looks alright though. Although movement seems a bit slow. The drowning effect is really obnoxious too.

The screen flashing black when underwater is a bit disorienting.

The Sonic effect is pointless if the character is "running" at 2 miles an hours.

Character merges way too much with the background. Try messing with the contrast between both of them.
Jump height looks a little too high, since you have so much air mobility it would be better to reduce most of it

Wow. Actually, thank you. I genuinely appreciate it. The bubble gun is an alt weapon you can purchase if you want. It's not a main weapon, the sword is. We'll change the messages. Watermellon dude (or mel in the Dev Team) is there for placeholders while more enemies are being made. We'll tone down the music. Thanks for the spritework complement. We'll upadte the logo to be brighter, but the game is kinda story focused, and it's a more dark story.

Make sure you try to get console ports if possible.
I actually think if you stick at this, it could become another indie darling.

Unlike everyone else I would not throw out playing up the furry angle, furries are incredibly supportive of any quality media that supports their culture and many of them throw loads of cash at these kinds of projects as well. As long as you don't try to cater to them as a primary market, it will be fine (also having human characters in your series helps to keep your product as being seen as a furry thing, even though furries don't care).

They're were place holder enemies that the team got attached to. it'll end up just being the tutorial enemy by the end of development

What makes it /ourgame/?

Not trying to appeal to furried. XD. There's humans in it, just haven't gotten too far into the story about it.

Sidenote: Crowdfunding comes in the Spring, along with a demo with the first two levels. Keep a look out for that.

There were humans in one of the Sonic cartoons too and that just made it 5x stupider. If you're gonna go furry at all, go all in. Mixing the races just looks dumb

My two main problems are:

I can assure you, I am not a furry. Won't be abandoned. I have too much of a desire to complete it. If you're referring to Freedom PLanet or Spark, this is nothing like those.

The drowning effect is a placeholder(we hate it too.) and there's a lot of things coming that'll set it apart. But thanks for the feedback!

it looks a lot like a game called zool, look at gameplays of t and get some idea if that's what you really want, also, I know you want your character to be outstanding, but gameplay in the end is the most importnant, yours still look a little weak, keep it up, not trying to be rude just friendly advice

Yeah. There's 100s of different games that re-invent platforming. So instead of making some game gimmick, we have every level do something unique (with the exception of this one) and we've been jam packing it with story stuff, and cool unlockables. Like the Otomotone mode. Just you wait.

It's rare that I laugh this hard on Sup Forums anymore.

I'd tell him that if he doesn't really have a very specific idea of a new platforming concept or mechanics, which I think is the case, he should pick a reference and learn as much as he can from it.

Do I want my platforming feel like mario? Then it should be less floaty, allow faster running and a pinch of slipperyness and innertia when starting and finishing your run.

Do I like Sonic? Work on those 2D physics big time and make movement highly dependant on it.

Megaman? Make your character floaty but heavy at the same time. He can jump and walljump decently but his horizontal movement is restricted besides dashes.

And level design should show the intention to display the main mechanics that define your game.


Not critizising his intent, since doing something with your free time is always to be applauded, but if he wants to improve, the general advice would be FOCUS. What does offer your game that might make me want to play it instead of others.

I recommend when you are ready to crowdfund you check out (or possibly even contact) Cliqist for advice. They are a news group that specializes in crowdfunded games.
