Single Player doesn't sell anymore for hard RTS. If you didn't have a dedicated E-Sports mode your game was going to die, regardless of what else you had. And even then they were still likely to die.

Age of Empire is a hard formula to fuck up, so they might bounce back. I think 40k is done though, there is no way to come back after 3. What people want is too split up. Some people want DoW1, some want co-op like DoW2.
