Just started og Monster Hunter. You guys got any tips? I've gotten to start 3 star quests and the game is a bit of a grind for armor. Is this case for all Monster Hunter games?

Every mh except World is a huge grindfest. That's basically the point.
Also, for early games you can never go wrong by always making the highest raw damage greatsword

Yeah I switched to that from the lance. I really wanted to use the lance but because I'm still getting adjusted to the janky ass camera controls, I couldn't hit anything because the lance has such a tiny horizontal hitbox

Its just outdated and clunky now man. You miss nothing by playing any of the newer ones, newer the better usually except gen.
Ive Played FU , Portable 3rd, 4U , Gen , & World i think its a tie with 4U and World.
