Partly true, and theatre background is why some dubs work but unless you’re getting someone really big, the japanese VAs are the best trained for animation and video game voice acting. Its a niche they get into head first unlike western actors which spread themselves over multiple roles.

The easy way to break his argument. Ask him when the last time was that any of these "talented individuals" had to sing, in character, a proper song. They use their normal talking voices 99% of the time. Hardly talent. Compare that to the Jap VAs who have roles covering a variety of characters. A soft spoken loli becoming a piss obsessed highschooler jail warden for example. Or a delinquent becoming a quiet studious girl.

Another factor is that a lot of western localizations just don't have the luxury to spend lots of time getting each character's lines perfect. I think the turnaround to get the script and VAs done and out the door for western releases is a few months at best. Final Fantasy XII stands out as an anomaly because the localization team was actually getting the script and script changes while the game was still getting worked on, as opposed to getting it after the game was released.

During gameplay, my attention shouldn't have to be directed towards subtitles so I can know what's going on. And in some cases not everything gets subtitles, small things an npc or enemy says outside of cutscenes don't always have subs.
