7/10. The shrines were kinda boring. Main quest was good though. I miss the old Zelda dungeons and I wasnt a fan of the weapon durability.
It was exactly what I was expecting, and I got my moneys worth out of it.
Firstly, the Switch reveal trailer still gives me goosebumps and makes me want to pick up and play the game immediately after seeing it. It's a fantastic trailer, and not many have come close to as well put together as that one.
Secondly, BotW lived up to my hopes in terms of a Zelda game. It was like going back to basics in terms of what you can do in a Zelda game, and the freedom that you had in it was very refreshing, making it feel like an all-new type of Zelda (although, it was ultimately similar to the first one, where it was essentially an open world to explore).
That being said, the game itself, when compared to other open world adventures is just OK. It's not breaking any new ground, but it's not really failing at anything in a major way either. Sure, there could have been a bit more in terms of dungeons, but I personally liked the little bite-sized dungeon/shrines that kept things fresh. They weren't super long, or completely convoluted. They were nice little puzzles that you could take on whenever you wanted.
The main "dungeons" (guardians) were good, but they all seemed very simple and straight forward. Aside from a puzzle or two, they were cut and dry, and not very challenging.
All in all, the game lived up to being a breath (no pun intended) of fresh air for the series, which had gone from something open-world to extremely linear. Story telling is fine and all, but when you have the option to pretty much go anywhere and do anything right from the start, it's pretty great. Aside from it being a great Zelda entry, it's a solid open-world genre game that doesn't do anything particularly special. If it weren't for the series, it would have probably been overlooked for the most part.

It is a tech demo, a glorified tech demo. Replaying A Link to the Past right now and BotW is lacking so fucking hard in game content, structure and world building, it's not even funny. They forgot to actually make a game out of it.

On topic, I really loved Breath of the Wild, but then I’m not your typical Zelda fan. I always preferred exploring beautiful open areas rather than making my way through a dark, dilapidated dungeon, which sucks because I generally do like the puzzles within said dungeons. Breath of the Wild’s bite size puzzle rooms align perfectly with my taste and allowed me to experience the fun of solving a puzzle without committing 45 minutes to a dungeon.
It exceeded my hopes. Probably my favorite game since Bloodborne came out.

Yeah, so did Bioshock Infinite once and Dragon Age 2 also Skyrim and Halo 3. Nowadays' video game scores and goty awards mean fuckall. They lost their last quantum of respect and integrity ages ago.
It's the modern equivalent of Ocarina of Time - if Ocarina of Time had all it's gameplay jammed into a wider Hyrule Field.
It feels like just half a game. No sense of adventure at all. Like Shadow of the Colossus but without anything that made SoC work.
Loved it for 300 hours, then it sank in that there's nothing in the world to explore other than finding koroks and spirit orbs. Optional secret treasures would have been great. But having the same rewards for everything kind of stopped me from revisiting and finishing the optional stuff, despite having had one of the best videogame experiences of the last 20 years.
Going fresh into the game was unbelievable and incredible, the endgame content is depressing though.

It disappointed me a lot in a lot of areas. And greatly exceeded them by far in others.
All things considered it greatly exceeded my expectations so I am not let down. And most of what I was let down with, was still technically in the game and done excellently, albeit only at select few occasions. The fact that they did prove that they could do even that though, gives me great confidence for the sequel though. Probably more confidence than Is should have, but confidence nonetheless.
I really loved Breath of the Wild and I have played through it fully twice. And I will probably replay it again eventually. Mapping your paths and trying to come up with effective routes for great gain after you've already explored the world, is actually really fun.

i don't know what that guy suffers from but i noticed it at about 20 hours when i used the sheikah sensor to find every chest around me and it was always either worthless rupees or some weapon i didn't need.
If they put something important in some place that was actually hard to find and not blindingly obvious from halfway across the map, children would never find it. The entire game reminds you at every chance that the game is for children with poor reasoning ability.
That's why cheesing it and setting limits for yourself is the only real challenge. I only started to get more than 3 hearts after i beat all the divine beasts and wanted to get the master sword.
I fell hard for BOTW, when I first got it I must have played it constantly for a month, just exploring and messing around. It really did reinvigorate that feeling about games I haven't had in so many years. After the honeymoon period ended the flaws became more glaring. Never has "a mile wide but an inch deep" seemed more apt.
It did live up to my hopes of what I wanted it to be, but it didn't exceed them if that makes sense. I would have wished the world was smaller but with more content. Also NO FUCKING INDOOR (IE Castle) OR UNDERGROUND DUNGEONS? WTF NINTENDO

The perfect direction for Zelda, and my favorite game of all time. 10/10. Here are some randoms thoughts:
Always hated the cinematic bullshit and weak overworlds in Zelda games. Dungeons never felt special and worlds felt small. This game fixed both of those issues. Light on cutscenes but still provides a sufficient Legend of Zelda story. They decided fuck dungeons and just made the best overworld in any video game. Beautiful scenery and creative shrines make exploration exciting and fun. Shrines chop up the usual dungeons a bit to make small puzzles all around the world rather than concentrated in 8 focused locations, which really encourages you to explore every bit of the map. Turning weapons into consumables rather than permanent power-ups was a good move and keeps combat interesting. Towns are very charming and memorable. Side quests are alright for side quests. DLC is pretty remarkable too because it adds more within the same world. Finding armor in the environment was great, and the DLC adds a pretty good amount to find. Master Mode really does up the difficulty in a great way It makes you think about weapon usage and surroundings much more. The Champion's Ballad trials are some of the best in the game and feel almost as special as the Beasts themselves. The finale is superb, with you facing Ganon whenever you feel you have weakened him enough and gained enough strength and skill to make it a fair fight. Beating up Calamity Ganon (or even the Blights before him) and finishing off him in the cathartic Dark Beast phase really adds a fitting finale to this game. Most of the grand ideas that were left out (strong weapons with no durability, tools like the hookshot being added, larger dungeons with them all playing out like Hyrule Castle) would really break the game's cohesion. Perhaps they could be done in a future Zelda game with Breath of the Wild's other main elements, but not Breath of the Wild itself with its focus on nature and exploration.
I don't think a single instance is enough.

BotW was the best exploration game that I've played, and I had a ton of fun with it. I would like to see the combat system made more interesting and the weapon durability system reworked somehow, but I still think it was one of the best games that I've played in several years.
I'm now waiting for enough time to go by for me to want to do a second playthrough, this time with the DLC.

Please, Nintendo's been making games for too long to be tripped up by something so insignificant. There are items all over the game that are attached to ropes and chains and the physics don't seem to fuck up at all. I think the more likely explanation would be that it would trivialize the climbing mechanics and everything would need to be much taller to compensate for being able to get a massive head start with the hookshot. I honestly think the hookshot would have been an incredible late game reward.

I'd give it a 8/10 for the world alone, and I can see why people think it deserves higher, but I think many of those people are not as experienced in games as I am. There's a lot in BotW that could have easily been done much better

I can nitpick the game to death at this point, but it was pretty goddamn exciting to experience all that stuff for the first time. I think its main issue stems from abandoning the linear story route in favor of encouraging exploration even post-Ganon, so you have hardcore fans dig into the game for 100+ hours instead of the usual Zelda 15-40 hour completion time.
Hopefully the next game brings a hint of real postgame content like WAY harder quest unlocks or monster spawns.

This seems like an incredibly circumstantial thing to use as evidence, probably because during the game's design a scenario never came up where he would need to swing from a rope. It's not like he needs ropes to cross long hazardous horizontal distances when he has a glider, which the game is more or less designed around.

Every game is made with lots of copypasta, but BotW just seems to have less filler that's just bulking up space rather than containing anything interesting. There's few places in the game where you'd say "this is just a nondescript forest", because there's something interesting almost everywhere. The only places I got the sense of land for-the-sake-of-occupying-space was some of the snow and desert areas, as it kind of just stretches on, but that's also the feeling they want you to have. A barren area.
Its not what i expected but in a good way. The world was maximum comfy and incredibly fun and relaxing to explore. The Sandbox of the game was amazing too and the only other game where i had so much fun just dicking around, finding ways to kill mobs was MGSV and thats it. The story was good, it kind of takes a back seat which makes me kind of sad but it was still good, not great, but good, however that didn't take away any of the fun i had playing it.

Probably. None of the kids in Gerudo town look like they have parents, and most are delinquents.
And few as they are, these are still the biggest settlements we've seen from non-hylians in a Zelda game. The Gorons and Zora have come a long way from having their entire civilizations in a cave.

They also told me to kill Ganon. And the king recommended going towards Kakariko and meeting Impa. But the game never made it out like you actually needed to or anything.
And since the very beginning the game has kind banked on the whole idea of being able to go anywhere from the very start. Even heading straight towards Ganon if you were to so wish.
So I instead looked at the horizon and marked the most interesting things I saw. Which included the Hebra Mountain peak. However, since I wanted to avoid the water/river and steep cliffs directly surrounding the north west side of the plateau, I ended up heading westwards instead, thinking I could make a turn towards the north shortly after. But ended up all the way down in Gerudo, and that place was just too interesting to ignore.
Then I explored all of Hyrule clockwise, doing Gerudo, Hebra, Death Mountain, and finally ended up at Akkala. At which point I found the Tech labs mentioning the upgrades researched at Hateno. Leading to me cut straight to the chase.
All things considered I considered it a really lovely route. It was also nice to explore the world without even having any quest markers for where the divine beasts/cities were. But if I was to really criticize the game for one thing that actually did disappoint me. It would be how you can't find Hestu anywhere but the road leading up towards Kakariko. I was like just short of 150 hours into the game when I finally found Hestu. With hundreds of Korok seeds, and yet no additional inventory slots.
And it's kind of amusing too considering that once you've actually met Hestu once, he starts to travel around and you can find him at numerous stables throughout Hyrule before he ends up in the forest. If you had been able to find Hestu at those stables from the very beginning, I'd have likely found him in my first 20 hours of the game as opposed to over 100 hours later.
to me it's like the sprint at the end of the race. you've seen everything, now it's time to finish. A dungeon is something that you do along the course of the game to get to the end goal IE final boss.
Maybe i'm being pedantic, but it's just my opinion
For the company that makes games for people of all ages including kids? Yeah, that's probably an acceptable baseline. I don't play games to have my asshole sealed shut by oppressive challenges, I play them to relax and have fun.

I couldn't pull off the dodges or guards at all. I tried, but it never clicked. I needed Daruk's Protection to beat Ganon.
That person did enough shrines to get just enough hearts to get the master sword which is substantially optional and rewards the player with easy mode against the bosses and guardians.
Loved it and played it up until MHW release so almost a year. Didn't like that the main dungeons all looked the same minus the naruto fan hideout and hyrule castle. No diving even with the zora suit was disappointing.

Two reasons why they likely weren't in the game:
Idiots have always had a hard time jumping from rope to rope in video games.
The rope physics weren't good enough or would have taken too much effort to design gameplay around.
The only time that link interacts directly with a rope is when he's riding a sand seal, and it's pretty janky.

The only thing in the game that comes close to a challenge is the trial of the sword.
Not that guy. But Dinraal killed a lynel for me once. West of death of mountain. Flew by really close the ground as I was right in the middle of fighting a lynel. And burned the entire place down.

I expected it to be a failed attempt at Nintendo's first open-world RPG to directly cater to the crowd that wanted to play Oblivion or Skyrim but were too stubborn to play a console that wasn't Nintendo's.
I was not disappointed. Weapon durability sucked, the game wasn't particularly beautiful, and there wasn't a whole lot to do in the game. Quests were repetitive, the music was poor compared to Twilight Princess, and I just didn't care about the story

Not every game needs to be Cuphead, but Nintendo games as of late have clearly been geared towards young children. BotW isn't even that bad, I'd say Odyssey is the real offender that's borderline unplayable for me because I feel more like I'm guiding Mario through an interactive movie than playing a game. Challenge is what gives you the satisfaction of completing objectives. If objectives are littered everywhere, literally hundreds of them, with nothing required to obtain most of them other than their observation, then that's deeply unsatisfying. It's like an easter egg hunt. Yes, kids love them, adults tend to stop playing.
You're basically doing the equivalent of circling a lone creep in wc3 and repeatedly hitting it with crowd control skills.
I kind of fail to see what the real issue is here to be honest. You could argue that the lizard takes too long to kill, but even then it could easily be killed in less than half the time than it takes in that webm if you just didn't brainlessly strike it over and over again with the full basic combo over and over again. Even while still using the same spear.
