They're still around,you just play the wrong kinds of games that would enable their existance. The GTA series still has Easter eggs and cheat codes, Secret Unlockables are still in many Japanese games like Digimon or One Way Heroics and stuff like Dragon Quest or Metroid still have easter eggs.

My device itself worked fine but it was a pain in the ass inputting the codes line by line and finding out it doesn't work. Some times I messed one of the hundred numbers up or the code just flat out doesn't work.

I had an AR for my PS2 back in 2006 or something. I think the only game it worked with was RE4, and I only used it because I had beaten that game so many times. I used it to unlock the handcannon because I hated the Mercenary missions (time limits always stress me out too much so I never liked doing them).
