McGee said that even if the Otherlands concept could be theoretically expanded(more shorts/stories, not a game or evolution of the concept itself), there is little left to tell about her story when it comes to the future.
On the contrary, there is still a lot of room in the past(some Wonderland related stuff are still left unexplained, as well as literal real life years since the fire happened until the start of Alice 1) and the fans themselves said they'd love a prequel.

Alice was born in 1856, the fire happened in 1863(she was 7 years old), Alice 1 takes place in 1974(18 years old).
Until recently it was assumed Alice 2 takes place 1 year after she's finally out of the Asylum, but McGeee showed a timeline in one of his streams where it said she's in her early 20s in Alice 2, possibly 22 or 23(fans questioned him about it and he said he has to check to be sure cause he doesn't 100% remembers the details of the events out of the ones directly in the games).

It's a weird case.
Recently, in light of Alice Otherlands and Out Of The Woods(small physical card game, unrelated to Alice), fans kept asking McGee to make Alice 3, to which he constantly replied "ask EA, i can't do anything if they dont want to, they own the IP".
Fans kept asking anyway, which bled in the streams he was doing at the time(exclusively for Out Of The Woods), and he kept repeating the same reply over and over.
Behind the scenes, this led EA to call him and basically going "so, about Alice 3...we saw OOTW was successful, so if you can fund it via alternative methods, you can make Alice 3".
So this "project" started.
EA will be the publisher, but everything else is up to McGee, development and marketing, in exchange EA will stay out of it entirely(99% probably).
As of now the goal is to make people interested enough to give money to him via patreon to fund an properly crafted basis to propose EA with the ideas for the full game, and so far other companies(he can't name them for various reasons) offered help and to co-fund it if he keeps making more fan come in.
I guess i can give more answers since I watched basically all of his streams, but i'd rather answer more specific questions(as long as there is an answer to give ofc) cause there's a lot of info but nothing is ever 100% sure or detailed and i don't remember everything on the top of my head.

The goal is literally millions of dollars(i think he said 10, i dont remember exactly so dont quote me on that), but there's time until the end of 2018 to fund the "proposal" portion(and so far its going good), and as I said, other companies(he hinted that one might be strictly related to a console, making a nod to the possibility it could be Sony or a company close to them) offered a possible help, even for up to(but not necessarily limited to) half of the needed money.

I like the series, but I'd admit that they can be a mixed bag.
They're worth the playthrough for the fun artstyle and great atmosphere, but both games had some tedious sections before the end.

Like every world in Madness Returns had a fantastic intro, but there's not always enough variety to keep the platforming and combat sections from starting to drag on.

Technically speaking, this is some sort of indie project since that outside of publishing, EA won't be involved, so he should have freedom for platform release, but he said EA might still have some power to make some content exclusive to them/origin, but with the way he is 100% against gameplay related microtransactions and other similar stuff, he assured that if that's the case, it won't affect the game itself.

This exactly. Every world and settings are fantastic, but the levels are just fucking too long and they end up being a chore. It's a real shame, though the game is still enjoyable if you know what you're in for.
