Who had the better d-pad, Sup Forums?

reposted because site is fucked

SNES easily. DS4 is the first Sony controller with a good d-pad.

Sega Saturn

In what way is the DS4 dpad better thanthe DS3 dpad?

Speaking of d-pads, what PC gamepad does Sup Forums use? Are there any well designed controllers for the PC that work well but will actually last too?
I made the mistake of buying an xbox360 controller to play through the metroid games again. God help me.

I use a 360 controller and I don't see anything wrong with it, works just fine and is more comfortable than dualshock.

This and the 360 d-pad

PS1’s controller breaks so easily
SNES is good but the 8BitDo rendition is fucking horrible for an expensive price

These are the best d-pads in my book, if DS1's sections were a little closer it's perfect otherwise SNES.

Worst d-pad of videogames. How?... HOW did they manage to fuck up genesis d-pad?!

I had a 360 controller for long time but it broke and I've used DS3 for few years since I don't usually play with gamepads I don't see any reason to buy anything else. Shame that drivers for DS3 are being developed by a fucking ponyfag which made a mess of them.

That gap in the middle of PS controllers has always been the worst shit. The concave center on the DS4 is what they should have done 15 fucking years ago.

Mad Catz MLG Pro Circuit controllers. They came with swappable dpad and joystick types, and you could even change their positions. Hopefully with Mad Catz under new management we can get something comparable this gen. Doubt it though.

Do you use the dpad regularly? As in, for movement? I've only really ever owned xbox systems, so I was used to the controller and thought it was a good idea. The problems I've noticed is that one side of my dpad is less responsive than others, the diagonals are easier to hit than the cardinals, and when switch from left to right quickly, direct pressure on the middle triggers an inadvertent "up" command, fucking up wall jumping in metroid.

The 360 has one of the worst dpads Ive ever used. I have a shitty $10 steelseries controller from a decade ago that still has a better dpad.

ibuffalo

DS4

This looks fantastic, but holy shit that price tag. Doesn't look like it's in stock too often nowadays, either.

It is not just you. Shit is unresponsibe as fuck. Playing SC/Tekken with a GC controller was less painful in that microscopic d-pad.

Just keep an eye on ebay. It's worth waiting for. Setup a watched search.

Will do user, thanks for the advice.

I think you mean convex
idoit

The original Genesis d pad was pretty shitty too senpai.

Obviously Nintendo's. Theo only reason everybody else didn't use their design was because they patented it.

Read a dictionary before you go around calling other people idoits.

Neither. PSP had the best D-pad of all time.

I haven't held a genesis controller in ages. what was wrong with the d-pad?

>idoit

Too wobly and inaccurate. Not that it is unusable but the snes dpad was always superior. Keep in mind that I am not a fanboy and play both systems regularly even today. This is just my opinion.

Like Super Metroid?
Get a SNES controller for PC, I have an iBuffalo

i can not count the number of times i've died in dark souls because of that shitty fucking dpad

Funny about that, user. I would, the problem is that for games like AM2R that have additional controls, I need the triggers as well. It'd also be nice to have the ability to play with analog sticks if I need to in the future.

I use my SNES controller with adapter primarily for 2D emulation; Dualshock 4 for xinput and everything else

this so much
>go to change spell or item
>whoops swapped out your shield or weapon
>dead
inaccurate piece of shit.

Both are pretty good. Somehow both companies managed to make their D-pads worse over time despite getting it right early on.

SNES Hands down.

A Dpad is bad because you can hit it in a way that makes it move opposite of what you attempted. This is super easy to do with a 360 controller, hence why those dpads are widely known to be the worst. Sliding in from the analog you can often push the dpad to the right instead of an intended left push. While I'm not going to dig out a dualshock 1 tonight to see if I can do it with that, I have a PS4 controller on hand. This sort of push is also possible on the PS4 although super unlikely to happen as the dpad & left analog positions are reversed. After attempting to make the snes dpad do this same thing, I couldn't make it happen. That's why I think the snes dpad is better. It's design doesn't allow for mispressed directions. Test it though for yourself. Make up your own mind.

Tell me about this controller. How is the dpad?

it's shit.

it's above average. the best part of the controller.

you're ruthless.

just get an xbox one controller.

I was thinking about that, but I remember that they upsized it from the 360. How is the grip and the new thumbsticks?

it's fucking awful. if the d-pad is important to you, get a different controller. I have a separate gamepad (another logitech sans analog sticks) just for playing d-pad games

If you like the 360 controller except for the d-pad, this will work well for you.

great. make sure you get the newer xbox 1s controller. they have better bumpers and have bluetooth.

This. I use one and it's great, but the bluetooth is only for w10. Still works fine over usb though.
Bumper improvements are night and day over the first round

What's wrong with the old type bumpers?

SNES d-pad has always felt mushy and awful to me. I don't know why everyone likes it so much.

only the inner part of the bumper responds

Nostalgiafags. All early controllers were shit. Only with the PlayStation generation were they getting good.

I don't own the xbox one controller personally, but I was playing PUBG and Hitman at a mate's place with it last night (with the old version of the controller I'm pretty sure), and it might have just cause I'm not used to it but they just felt "wrong" to use. They weren't clicking/holding like I would have expected them to, I don't think I had an issue with any other aspect of the controller except for that. I'm sure it's something you could get used to, but just something to be aware of

Some people hate it, I've never had a problem with it. Feels weird at first if you're not used to tilt-style dpads, but never had any problems mashing out quick directions with it in fighting games or THPS or anything.

What about shit like this? They look good, but I'm worried I'll regret my purchase.
Xbox one controllers are kind of pricey, and to be perfectly honest I'm autistic in that I kind of like wired controllers.

An Xbox One controller is going to feel way better, and you can use it wired if you want to. I don't think $50 is ridiculous for a controller that will last you years.

I am in the same boat, down to the "my autism makes me want a wired controller" part.

I've used the controller with android devices a bunch of times

I have both types and each are fine. Newer one is easier to hit. Not a huge difference but it's there

There's a reason 8bitdo chose to improve on literal perfection.

Honestly, Ive always preferred the Playstation dpad due to the segments. despite growing up with a SNES JR & Genesis MK2 back in the mid-late 90s

All I want is this but with extended grip. Is that too much to ask?

it was enormous in size and had raised plastic ridges that made transitioning to diagonals really clunky. build quality was also shit and the dpad would begin to wobble loosely and start squeaking within a year

>8bitdo
>perfection

Ayy

>Only with the PlayStation generation were they getting good.
Saturn had the only good controller from the generation.

Yeah, with a design that was with us to this day.

Wii classic controller pro

fucking this. i don't know why people here are saying the DS4 dpad is good, it's trash compared to the older Sony controllers.

The Mk2 D-pad was amazing, though. Almost as good as the Saturn's. Mk1 was stiff and awkward.

never get an xbox controller for something that isn't a shooter/modern racing game. this should be common knowledge

>trying to play a fighting game with that dpad
pure fucking agony, not only can not do any complex inputs but your thumb starts hurting after 2 minutes

Looks like, but muh usb connectivity
Yeah, considering that's all I played on the xbox I never realized how shit the dpad was until now.

SNES. D-pad has a nice spongey feel to it yet very clickable. It's comfortable.

An usb adapter should exist
