How important is Benny really?
He's a nice first antagonist but as soon as you meet him in the strip his character kinda ends

You answered your own question. You confront and either kill him or he escapes somehow to promptly die by the legion. All his characterization plays out from either the opening cutscene or story beats before you meet him in-game.

The way for you and him to survive the legion is that you pack two stealth boys. Use one for yourself and give the other to him. Benny most likely flees Vegas after escaping.

He's to New Vegas what Walton Simons was to Deus Ex.

Perry had to have played New Vegas since he's such a big Fallout fan. Wonder what he did to Benny on his playthrough.

In the grand scheme of things Benny was just the catalyst, once his plan was actually put into motion he was shown to be thoroughly over his head.

He's still a perfect personal antagonist for the courier though and I do wish there were options for him to somehow survive through sheer luck and oppose you more throughout the story

I'm playing New Vegas for the first time now and just wondering how early should you meet him? Because I'm level 42 and almost all my skills are 100 and my main quest is still showing "confront Benny at the Tops". I haven't even gone to the strip once.

honestly it doesnt matter, it doesnt force you to go see him too. you have to actually go to his casino, The Tops, to confront him

I haven't played Dead Money or Lonesome road yet, but I think I've done all other side quests in the game and visited almost all locations outside of the strip. I'm a perfectionist and don't want to miss anything and want to do things in clear order.

not really, the quests in the outskirts of the world map are the highest level quests, all of vegas is a mid-game area

This is interesting, since in the release version of the game, it was possible for Victor to become your companion if you did things in a certain way, he had a companion wheel and everything, any time you changed cells he would teleport to you, but wouldn't actually follow you on foot.

I wonder if that's because they had some left over companion scripting for him active.

This. He was a perfect example of blind ambition. Even if his plan had succeeded in the way he intended it to it still likely wouldn't have been very long before he was done away with.

I love House's questline, and he's definitely the faction leader I agree most with, but does anyone else find it weird that he can't be talked out of wiping out the Brotherhood? By the time he asks you to do it, it's pretty apparent that he considers you his top employee, why wouldn't a speech check convince him that the Courier could convince the Brotherhood to fight for them?

Because you need characters to have their vices in order to not be completely uninteresting and shallow. House's is that he can be a petty control freak who can't abide people ideologically opposed to him or have otherwise shown they might go against his interests. Hence why the Kings also get wiped out by him if you make them reconcile with the NCR or he overtaxes the shit out Primm if they received protection from NCR.

If Helios showed anything, it's that the Brotherhood isn't equipped for all out war. They can carry out gorilla attacks on unsuspecting traders but that's about it - if they start messing with the big boys they'd be outgunned straight away. Even they would't be crazy enough to launch a suicide mission on the Strip which would probably see them all dead before they make it past the gates.
