Well, I grew up in a country called Slovenia. If you don't know where it is--like most people--it's basically in Eastern Europe.

By today's Western standards, it would be considered nothing more than a shithole country.

Anyways, the reason I'm mentioning this, is because Slovenia has some beautiful scenery and is still a natural country.

Unlike bigger metropolitan cities, in Slovenia you can actually:

Hear birds sing in the morning, you can hear the buzzing of bees, you can feel the wild green grass caress your knees while walking in the fields...

You can listen to the relaxing sound of flowing water and the excited frogs surrounding it, you can pick wild sour cherries from the trees, you can feel the freshness of the natural air...

Basically, you can enjoy life as it was meant to be!

Now, you're probably wondering why I'm telling you all this...

I am currently living in a REALLY big city in the United States, and there is not a single day that passes without me thinking about my childhood.

To help me cope with that feeling, I tried to watch some classic Slovenian movies but it didn't work. I then decided to try some video games...

And guess what?

It WORKED!

I was able to get myself immersed in games that reminded me of my home country! But WHICH games am I talking about?

Well, Oblivion and Witcher 3 did a decent job... but the REAL magic happened when I played Kingdom Come: Deliverance yesterday.

Listen, I am in no means a "medieval game freak" and I don't particularly like that period. The reason I'm playing Kingdom Come: Deliverance, is because it's the ONLY game that can ENTIRELY transport me to my childhood...

A relaxing place, far from pollution, social media, and all the other vices of the modern-day society.

If you're not looking to only play a game, but you want to EXPERIENCE it... with total IMMERSION... then Kingdom Come: Deliverance is for you.

Holy shit. When I tried this game (and promptly uninstalled/refunded when an objective called [CW: Rape] "Save Theresa from the rapists" popped up onscreen) I had no idea of this background, but as i dug deeper into the marketing and then the opening act, I was like “Huh a bunch of things about this game’s design philosophy feels like it’s hinting at the ideology that formed GG”, right down to evoking The Witcher 2 & 3 in very particular ways. I kind of hate being able to feel this shit in my bones these days.

This is swift becoming a dire example of what games culture (especially on PC) utterly fetishizes. Immersive sims have stopped being cute experiments when you realize how easy it is for such a traditionally centrist-bent genre to slide very far-right with the veneer of the thinking man’s whatever.

The facial mocap is intricate and the camerawork deliberate (ass shots included!); the tutorials are unwelcoming walls of text for overwrought systems meant to impress you, like they were made by a gameFAQs kid that wants every game to be “more realistic”; the fact that you can accomplish things in several ways is meant to eclipse any consideration of what your objectives or given choices might mean. All this showy bullshit and the right connections to make the game happen have made it so that Waypoint’s still the only place I’ve seen bring up the inexorable link to GG, while it happily plays to any other outlet remotely covering PC games with a dash of the ol’ No DRM to show just how consumer-friendly they are.

Plus, even in the opening act, the game reads like a manifesto on the contradictory very ethical thoughts of creeps that are convinced games aren’t political while they try to make a political point with their video game.

and they are/were helping develop a game of thrones mod even before the release, because of fucking course they are.

On low settings you might get 50-60 frames and you might be able to get away with some things on medium. Depth of Field will have to be all the way down though because dof really bogs down the performance in this game and it looks kind of ridiculous having the world pop in on you at 20-30m like your playing elder scrolls 1 or something.

This game, man.

I barely thought it would live up to the hype, let alone exceed it. I've been playing for four hours straight across only two towns, and it has been absolutely and utterly humbling so far. My breath is being taken away at every turn.

I just died trying desperately to fight a guard with a basic sword on a warm, bustling, massive town, with ominous shouting startling me from far across some rocky, eroded mountains against the backdrop of a massive blue sky. Earlier I was marveling at a fruit stall. Merchants were shouting in the distance and tinkling piano chords played in the background.

I very much appreciate the technical and leveling aspects such as the skill system and the combat, but most of all, this game has been an extremely emotional experience for me so far. I could barely pull myself away from the first town once I acquired the ability to free-roam. No matter what I'm looking at, I have this excitement and this wonder and frustration that I am inevitably missing so much. I have never, EVER felt this lost. Bohemia just beckons, wordlessly. What a beautiful, beautiful, titanic game. I have no words.

Everyone should give it a chance. And thank you, Vavra and Warhorse Studios. Jeez Louise.

pirated it so no refunds. it's kinda ok to mess around for a bit, but the AI is laughably retarded in most instances and the whole game feels kinda empty, like GTA V: Medieval.
