Is it just me or did the scene where Gordon beats the shit out of the main character feel out of character? I always thought of him as someone just trying to make his way out of the facility.

Yeah, I wonder how he survives these shots or burns to the head then, not mentioning the HEV'S HUD. He doesn't wear his helmet because that would make him a next generic HEV scientist model, like the ones you see dead in Xen. Making his face visible was just Valve's idea to make him more distinguishable.

If he doesn't have a helmet then explain the hud. And no it's not just a gameplay contrivance. The hud only appears when he puts the suit on and we hear the syit initializing the hud ammo tracker and such, so the hud is an actual in game thing.

It is a gameplay contrivance, it only shows up once you get the suit because it shows information that only becomes relevant once you have the suit on.
