I was thinking about getting the Switch but I have questions before I get stuck with a system I might not like. I don't know if I want it but I am really curious about a few of their games, just not enough to drop $300+ blindly so I'm hoping I can get some info before I commit or decline. I'd say no trolling but, seriously, that's like asking the scorpion not to sting.
Anyway. So, I buy the thing, what else am I going to have to buy with it, games aside? It needs external memory, right? Screen protector, I guess. Anything else?
I tried out the controller and that thing is tiny, like it was made for little children and Trump, tiny. The buttons and sticks are really close together and the pro controller are kinda fucking expensive. Does that shit take time to get used to? On top of that I borrowed a WiiU and after a few hours that anti ergonomic thing gave me tendonitis so I don't exactly like how the tablet mode looks so similar. Is this shit going to hurt to play?
I saw rechargeable batteries for those tiny controllers, do they not come with rechargeable batteries?
Does the Switch record gameplay? It's not a huge deal but I like to save cool shit when it happens.
So the Switch has 32gb and the biggest stick they have 'officially' was 60 gb. That's less than 100gb, is that really enough? Are the games that small?
(cont.) Can I wait for a price drop? The fucking WiiU practically never got one, it was the same price for fucking ever. I don't know if that's a Nintendo thing, will there be a price drop or a Switch XL 3D lite with better capacities in the near future I should wait on?
Is there Nintendo money I can buy? I don't like giving council makers my bank info, both PSN and XBL have fucked me over so I'm not trusting Nintendo, either.
Is it worth it? Honestly. I can only think of 3 games I want to play on that thing and I already have a hefty backlog dating back to the PS2 so I'm not lacking in things to play but are the games they have and the unique features worth buying?
Is there anything else I need to know?
For the record, a huge reason I haven't just bought is that when I look into it I read about all the kinda douchebag things Nintendo does and it's known for I don't really want to get involved. I want to get it but from what I know I don't want to have to deal with Nintendo.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO DON'T GET A SOYTCH GO BUY A PS4 RIGHT NOW RIGHT NOW RIGHT NOOOOOOOW
Charles Ortiz
I have a PS4 and I love the shit out of it, doesn't mean I'm not curious about the games on Switch.
Evan Jackson
You've made up your mind.
Gabriel Wood
Why are you even asking here? It sounds like you don't want it.
Luis Nelson
Honestly as somebody who only has a Switch it doesn't get enough exclusives. They used the 3 heavy hitters in the first year (Zelda, Mario, Mario Kart) the only one left is Smash.
Blake Gutierrez
I'm thinking about buying too OP. But It has more to do with the job I am on the road for 10 months working on a ship a year. I got the cash, but still, I feel unclean when I think about it joining the Nincult.
Owen Thompson
>Anyway. So, I buy the thing, what else am I going to have to buy with it, games aside? It needs external memory, right? Screen protector, I guess. Anything else? I have a screen protector but I honestly don't feel it's mandatory, despite how many will tell you otherwise. I had mine for months before I got a screen protector (which I only bought because I wanted to carry the system in my pocket sometimes. So, if you're using the system in the dock (given how soft the edges are in the dock I think the "dock scratches" are a myth) or in handheld and not putting it in your pocket or something, I don't feel a protector is necessary. A good case is pretty important if you plan on taking the system anywhere, though; even just a basic clamshell hardcase will do. >Does that shit take time to get used to? Yes, some people never get accustomed to it whilst others do, but don't order a pro controller until you've used the joycons for at least a week to make up your mind about it >On top of that I borrowed a WiiU and after a few hours that anti ergonomic thing gave me tendonitis so I don't exactly like how the tablet mode looks so similar shape-wise they're completely different, the back of the wii u has molded extrusions meant to make it easier to hold, and imo it is but some strongly disagree - the switch doesn't have this, the back is flat for docking. >Does the Switch record gameplay? yes, hold the snapshot button to record 30s of gameplay, works in most games but not all. >So the Switch has 32gb and the biggest stick they have 'officially' was 60 gb. That's less than 100gb, is that really enough? Are the games that small? yes, games install almost nothing and downloading them is still pretty small as first and second parties know how to compress games properly. Some third party titles get large, but generally it's cheaper to buy physical for those anyway. Don't get an SD card until you actually need one. Keep in mind you can archive games on the system.
Jayden Myers
I haven't owned a Nintendo product in the internet age and I don't really like the things I hear about Nintendo but from what I've seen of BotW it seems like a worthwhile game and I'm huge on Bayonetta. If I want' tempted I wouldn't bother asking. These are legitimate questions, I don't know if I'll get one or no because I know the answers to the questions above, not random bitching.
Justin Reyes
wait until 2019 by then hopefully you will have enough to afford it without buyer's remorse.
Ian Evans
if you actually base your opinion on bullshit like "nintendo makes youtube celebrities angry" and other shit like that, you're not legitimately interested, and it really sounds like you're just trying to stir up drama. every single console developer and publisher has done shady motherfucking shit. basing your decision on that is laughable.
Benjamin Bailey
Screen protector and pro controller. the cheap pro controllers work fine. but if you had a ds/3ds and survived it then it shouldn't be bad holding the thing. the controllers charge while the console is docked and attached to it. the share button takes screen shots and records the last 30 seconds of play, but is limited in what it can be used in, like xbc2. dont buy the official mico sd cards its a jewish scam. no idea about price drops. they have nintendo cards from $10-99. if you only have 3 games you want though then hell no, just wait a bit and there might be a price drop as well
Brandon Peterson
>Can I wait for a price drop? The fucking WiiU practically never got one nobody can say for sure, but it seems unlikely there'll be any major price drops. Possibly some good bundles later down the line, though. However, retailers have done a few good deals on the system, so it may be best to wait for a good price from a retailer rather than waiting for an unlikely RRP/MSRP drop. Otherwise, I don't see a revision or official price drop for another couple years, but this is purely speculation. >Is there Nintendo money I can buy? yes, you can get giftcards to exchange on the eshop, even game dlc and digital copies can be bought from other retailers like amazon. >Is it worth it? Honestly. I can only think of 3 games I want to play on that thing I'd suggest holding off unless/until there are 5 games you want to play, also known as the "5 games rule", as this avoids any regretful purchases. >Is there anything else I need to know? Kingdom Battle is an extremely underrated game, you should look into it
Jace Wright
I haven't needed external memory but any sdxc card is supported. Screen protector yes. Joycons can be detatched and have decent battery life. Tablet mode isn't exactly comfy but its passable when you don't have a table to tabletop on. Pro Controller is highly recommended, they're very nice. Nintendo Eshop cards are available. My recs are Bayonetta 1+2, LA Noire, Furi, and Sonic Mania.
Grayson Fisher
its like a Vita XL imo. >So, I buy the thing, what else am I going to have to buy with it, games aside? if u plan on going full digital then memory. Its region free so changing the language changes the region. You can find some nice deals that way like games that are 10% off state side might be 20% off in Uropeland.
Im an oldfag so I take care of my shit. I dont use screen protectors cause I hate air bubbles and I live in a dusty pet environment so I can never get a clean seal... ever. So I went to etzy and got a zelda cloth sleeve for my dock. Have yet to see a scratch.
controllers are optional. The left "d-pad" works alright. I roll my thumb to do a haduken and guess what... I do one. > tried out the controller and that thing is tiny they are, and they were made for small hands. I have giant bear claws and I hit ZL/ZR with the base of my index fingers, not the tip. Its not uncomfortable. >I saw rechargeable batteries for those tiny controllers, do they not come with rechargeable batteries? they do. its just a money grab. Nintendo even sales the dock separate. why...... >Does the Switch record gameplay? I believe so. dont quote me on it >So the Switch has 32gb and the biggest stick they have 'officially' was 60 gb. That's less than 100gb, is that really enough? no, u can go bigger. Dont give into those nintendo branded sandisk's.... they put vita memory price tags on that shit just for mario's face on the label. >Is there Nintendo money I can buy? I don't like giving council makers my bank info nintendo will ask if you want to save info for latter purchases. You dont have too. Yeah, psn and xbl both save it. I hate that. if u get hacked so does your bank info. >Is it worth it? if you plan on playing nintendo, then duh yes. >Is there anything else I need to know? yes. They are making online pay2play. Its like $20 a year and starts sometime this fall in 2018. So for almost a year now, online multiplayer has been free.
Julian Fisher
>Yes, some people never get accustomed to it whilst others do, but don't order a pro controller until you've used the joycons for at least a week to make up your mind about it Can you use the pro on the go mode? Is there a cheaper version or 3rd party with bigger buttons that aren't cheap knock offs?
>yes, hold the snapshot button to record 30s of gameplay, works in most games but not all. Well, that's something. Usually I record when something cool happens not to record me doing something.
>yes, games install almost nothing and downloading them is still pretty small as first and second parties know how to compress games properly So the games run off the cartridge. I guess that's kinda obvious but with Bayo1 being digital only I wanted to know.
>Screen protector and pro controller. the cheap pro controllers work fine. Well, that answers that.
>nobody can say for sure, but it seems unlikely there'll be any major price drops. Yeah, I was afraid of that.
>I'd suggest holding off unless/until there are 5 games you want to play, also known as the "5 games rule" Fair enough. I can wait that long.
>Kingdom Battle is an extremely underrated game, you should look into it Ok.
Christopher Martinez
>So I went to etzy and got a zelda cloth sleeve for my dock. Have yet to see a scratch. the dock doesn't even cause scratches to begin with, it's a complete myth with absolutely no evidence backing it up
Kevin Collins
dont get it you are a faggot you dont deserve it sony fag
Jacob Rodriguez
>Can you use the pro on the go mode? you mean tabletop? yes >Is there a cheaper version or 3rd party with bigger buttons that aren't cheap knock offs? I've heard the hori ones are good but I haven't used them. I'm fine with the joycons personally >Well, that's something. Usually I record when something cool happens not to record me doing something. I should mention that you hold the snapshot button to record the 30 seconds that had just happened, not to toggle a live recording. >So the games run off the cartridge. yeah pretty much, any games that do have installs are miniscule in size, even updates for e.g. Splat 2 are quite small in filesize.
Carson Hall
Not OP, but what are games that are best first buys. MultiPlay I was thinking MArioKart, but for Single, I am torn apart between Mario or Zelda. What is better? Otherwise, I will probably get Darkest Dungeon for my Indie on the go and suffer
Nathan Cruz
dont buy a pro controller unless you like having an unresponsive, shitty d-pad. despite what people will say, it has NOT been fixed. if you dont care about wasting 70 bux for one of your input methods to be inaccurate, then by all means go for it
Angel Cruz
I'd say Zelda is longer on average (not counting 100% completion for it as nobody in their right mind would bother doing that), with people typically playing it for 70-100 hours. Odyssey has tighter level design, better quality consistently, and a really good post-game, but it's also shorter and its highs aren't as high (even if this means less low-points than Zelda). I'd go with Zelda, by a small margin.
Logan Turner
Xenoblade > Zelda > Mario in terms length, but if you're into musous then Fire Emblem Warriors or Hyrule Warriors will utterly destroy them in terms of replay value. But you really kinda need to be a fan of the genre to get the most out of it.
Easton Roberts
>Its region free Ok, that is good to know. Not essential but a good plus. But, no, I prefer physical.
>Its not uncomfortable. Well, my big concern for the size was because I would be playing a lot of Bayonetta and I don't want to hit the stick when I'm trying to push a button.
>they do Oh, good. I fucking hate that about Xbox controllers.
>if u get hacked so does your bank info. Yeah, I know. It's why I ask.
>yes. They are making online pay2play. Its like $20 a year and starts sometime this fall in 2018. So for almost a year now, online multiplayer has been free. Not sure if that's something I'd get so I don't know if I care about it, or at least I won't know till I see how it goes.
>Not OP, but what are games that are best first buys. OP here. Actually, the ones I was really eager to play are Bayonetta, BotW and Xenoblade, if that helps answer your question.
Well, after talking to people here I decided I can wait for a few months till there are at least 5 games I'm dying to play, Maybe once Bayonetta 3 is close to release. It's not like I'm strapped for cash but I don't want a black box gathering dust.
Anyway. Thank you all for your input. I really do appreciate it. Expect you two . You two go fuck yourselves.
Now, when I do get it... which color should I get?
Liam King
Starting from >what else am I going to buy 1, Switch is a games only machine. I even deleted my Hulu off it because it was too obtrusive on the homepage. If you're not ready to commit to a game machine don't buy one. 2. The controllers are tiny. They are also portable and many games can also be played with just one, meaning it had double the battery life and they already have a good battery life of like 10 hours! (Just the Switch doesn't.) 3. I think what you saw was just a comfort grip with charger installed. You never need this in my experience. 4. Switch records 30 seconds of play in 720p, but only for Zelda, Mario, Mario Kart 8, ARMS, and maybe a few other Nintendo titles atm. 5. Switch games are small but there are many to buy. Most indie games run between less than 100MB to 1GB. To give an idea, my indie games run: Shovel Knight Specter of Torment .25GB, Vaccine .5GB, Dandara 2GB, AeternoBlade 3GB, Radiation Island 4GB and Perception 7GB.
Nicholas Bell
i hope you buy it and get unhappy with it asshole
Aiden Moore
>I should mention that you hold the snapshot button to record the 30 seconds that had just happened, not to toggle a live recording. So, even better.
Thank you for your answers. Yeah, it's not as bad as I feared. Honestly, if not for all the awards BotW is getting and Bayonetta I might not be that interested but it seems to be doing well and when systems do well they tend to get good shit on them.
I'm just glad most people took me seriously and didn't just pass my questions off as flaming.
Cheap and works great. Don't even consider other options.
>Anything else? You might want a pro controller which will set you back $50-60 but it's not essential. It's a really nice controller though. Another dock is nice to have so you can move around different rooms for whatever reason but that depends entirely on your needs and/or if you can score one for cheap. I don't recommend buying a second official dock at MSRP. I bought one used for like $25 and that was plenty reasonable. If you plan to use the joycons detached, I'd recommend buying the sliders for them to make them more comfortable but they are still pretty optional.
>I saw rechargeable batteries for those tiny controllers, do they not come with rechargeable batteries? controller batteries are all internal rechargables. No extra purchases required.
>Does the Switch record gameplay? sort of. It's similar to the PSShare functionality.
>Can I wait for a price drop? It's Nintendo so no. Buying now is gonna be the same as buying in a year.
>Is there Nintendo money I can buy? Yes, just like with WiiU, there are prepaid cards you can buy.
>Is it worth it? I'd say yes. I admit I don't own that many games on it but the games I have bought I have thoroughly enjoyed and I love the functionality of being able to play on a TV at home or in portable mode on the go and that flexibility ends up being a lot more handy than you'd think. It basically fully realizes what the WiiU tried to be and ditches the failed second screen gimmick because it just doesn't work on a home console.
Mason Bailey
>Don't even consider other options. orzly protectors are also good, but personally I went with amfilm as it was cheaper at the time. I feel that a screen protector isn't a necessity, though. >controller batteries are all internal rechargables. No extra purchases required. this. To add to it, the joycons last 20+ hours and the pro 40+, so don't fall for any battery pack memes.
Nathan Butler
>Its region free does that mean that if i buy a japanese switch, i can go and change it to mexico and mexico store and wont have problems with that? how about if im from europe and change the region to USA, will i be able to buy a game that is not yet here and be able to switch back and still have the game?
Grayson Rodriguez
I think so. The thing is if you buy a Japanese Playstation they have the circle and X functions reversed. Circle is confirm, X is cancel or return, but Nintendo has it set up like that all around already, buttom button is cancel, etc.
I don't own the switch yet but that's how it worked with the WiiU. I sent a PS4 to my cousin in SLP and they haven't complained so I'm guessing it's the same for the Switch.
Ryder Kelly
>SLP sleep status?
Jason Moore
San Luis Potosi, Mexico.
Angel Miller
The only game that anyone wants to play is on CEMU anyway.
James Baker
Necessary purchases >screen protector >big microSD; even if you buy 100% physical, you'll need space for game updates >carrying case >bulky power bank if you want to buy into the portability meme
Joycons are perfectly fine and you don't necessarily need a Pro Controller, although the Pro is more comfortable to hold
The Joycons have a 20 hour battery life. Unless you plan on having 20 hour game sessions, your Joycons will never run out of juice as long as you put them on the Switch when you charge it, and even then, they still last a damn while if you just leave your Switch on standby for several days
You can record 30 second clips on select games. Shitty, but it's better than nothing and the supported games are basically all the big name titles anyway
Christopher Wright
If you're impatient, go try finding a deal online for a used system. Now that Switches can be easily purchased, the bandwagoners and scalpers are trying to unload their consoles onto others and will usually well for a small discount. I've seen them go as low as $250. Don't count on an official price drop
You can buy eShop cards at stores
Don't fall for the 2017 Switch memes: the Switch is still a Nintendo console that's biggest draw is being able to play Nintendo games. Depending on how much you adore Mario and Zelda, it might be worth it, but if you're not in some capacity a die-hard Nintendo fan, might want to save your money
Landon Ortiz
>big microSD; even if you buy 100% physical, you'll need space for game updates Doubtful
Isaiah Morris
Get one when it gets hacked
Easton Adams
There are already individual games whose updates can't fit onto the internal 32GB
Blake Williams
>Necessary purchases the only one of these that is actually necessary is a carry case imo. Games have absolutely tiny installs and updates, even splat 2 only takes up 1gig and that's the largest they get in terms of install+updates. Screen protectors are a complete meme, and I say that as someone that got an amFilm screen protector (just so I could carry around in my pocket without my keys scratching it), there's little reason to get one otherwise. Power banks aren't necessary for most uses, as if you're e.g. commuting on bus/train/plane you'll just use the power outlets provided to plug a USB C cable in. which games? the only ones I can think would be something like bayo 1 not being included on the cart, that's not an update though it's a digital game. Even so, OP could just archive a game after he beat it.
Andrew Rogers
Isn't it just that NBA game that's actually a full download? Some games do have rather large downloads though. If OP is going just for first party stuff, he should be okay without a memory card for a while though.
Logan Harris
>If you're impatient No, I can wait. If there is no price drop I can wait for a few more games to release to make it worth while.
>Depending on how much you adore Mario and Zelda, it might be worth it, but if you're not in some capacity a die-hard Nintendo fan, might want to save your money I don't like Mario and I don't know much about Zelda but I love Okami and Bayonetta and I'm not strapped for cash but at the same time the couple hundred the Switch goes for can buy a lot of other games and miscellaneous toys, but, like I said before, I think I might wait for Bayonetta 3 to be around the corner.
