They simply do not care. Last year someone put a Pickle Rick game on the steam store and Adult Swim had to take it down.

The dev didn't ring up Valve and say "I want to make the next Half-Life game, guys". He just licensed the Source developer kit, which entitles you to distribute all of the HL2 code and assets because Valve has long ago ceased needing HL2 as a revenue stream. The memes are probably going to be the first any higher-up Valve employee knows this exist.

What the fuck was even the reason for the enemy to try and make Freeman look like an asshole during the Black Mesa events? Did this piece of shit game ever give a reason for it?

You have the right to use the assets and code from source games, and sell the things that you make with said assets and code. You don't have the right to use names trademarks associated with source games outside of derivative works (you also might have restrictions on using those trademarks and names when selling derivative works, such as HDTF, but as previously noted Valve doesn't care). In short, even if someone licenses the SDK they can't create a Half-Life movie and throw it onto Redbox, and a competently-developed and advertised unofficial Half-Life sequel would probably violate trademarks at some point. HDTF slid out because it was beneath notice.

They sold this game as a mod. Valve has already said that they don't mind this kind of stuff so long as they make it VERY CLEAR that they are not involved with Valve in any official way and that their work is a derivative one.

Some lower-end youtubers would gladly work for cheap if they could get to be relevant and put their name in a "game".
This project was all about getting as much money as they could and using as little as they had to so they could pocket the rest.

Yeah - Hunt Down the Freeman isn't a high quality game. But someone had put their time and effort into it, not a professional team with high expectations, but a small group of developers. And that's what made it great for me, to see that people actually tried to make something. I don't agree with it being 21 dollars when HL2 is only 10, but I love the spirit that was put into this game. That people had tried to do something new, to continue the series Valve had made. It might not be great. But it's that they tried that makes me happy.
