SHMUP, once the biggest genre next to platformers, is dead

>SHMUP, once the biggest genre next to platformers, is dead
>Genres like dating sims, roguelikes and fucking point 'n clicks still live one

What is it about SHMUPs that modern audiences hate so much?

Name 3 dating sims that were released in the past 3 years

Simple, usually hard to master gameplay, no one has the attention span for those kinds of games anymore

Memorizing patterns is too much of an effort for the average gamer

The fact that every game from 2007-2014 was a shmup and people are fucking sick of it

What universe are you from?

It's not like that's stopping you from playing the good old games. Besides there are plenty of indie shoot 'em ups released to keep a fan satisfied.

Disregard this I apparantly don't know the meaning of shmup

Also i suck dicks

I mean sure shmups made by big devs are dead but the indie shmup scene is still alive and well.
Hell the Switch has a surprisingly large selection of them already.

Touhou

They're all almost exactly the same.

touhou is bigger than ever, op

Really makes you think

Memorization is not fun but I fucking love it

Thats because normies finally found out about it, same shit like it was with hatsune miku

>usually hard to master gameplay
>Free movement and 1 button

There isn't much to see or do in SHMUPs, and once you've played one you've seen basically all there is to the genre. That and playing the same level over and over every time you fail gets old fast.

At least shmups had Sine Mora and Resogun in the last years

>normies don't like shmups
>what about touhou
>that's just stupid normies

???

>and once you've played one you've seen basically all there is to the genre

Bruh...

>Top-down
>SHMUP

t. plebbest unknowledgeable pleb

People don't want a game that's essentially 1 hour of content that's designed to be replayed and eventually mastered for high scores. Platformers were able to evolve beyond that, but shmups kinda stayed the same.

How about you address any of my points instead of name calling?

I do not desire to speak about such matters with a raging faggot like yourself and rather call you a pleb

Then I'll just casually dismiss you as being yet another absolute, irredeemable retard.

I would kill someone for a new Gradius or even an anthology release. Too bad it's Konami we're talking about here.

There is a fine line between incredibly easy and boring, and bullshit that becomes trial and error. I haven't played one with a balance I enjoy

Sure go ahead, you have my permission

I still say Nintendo should convert Star Fox into a Shmup series and leave Kid Icarus as the rail shooter.
Honestly, SF is already a perfect setup for it
>branching paths
>loops
>four pilots who would have different weapons

I blame Rank Management.
Seriously, whatever retard thought Rank Management was a good idea needs to be dragged into the street and shot. That shit is cancer.

everyone should go play sine mora

sine mora sucks play blue revolver instead.

>normalfags always complain about 2hu being hard
>meanwhile in CAVE shooters youtu.be/enajqq-ptb8

take that back you fucking pleb.
what do you think of revolver360?

I have never thought about that but it sounds like it could be an excellent use of the IP in a spin-off capacity.

>Nintendo collaborating with CAVE for the next star fox
>yfw TLB slot machine

A lot of Psikyo shmups are on Switch now, so I've bought a lot of them. Man those are some fun games. Hopefully they put Strikers 1999 on there, that's one of my all time favorites.

Anyone here try Raijin RXN on Switch? It looked interesting but I haven't heard anything much about it.

Fucking imagine

All this fucking effort

youtube.com/watch?v=us2Yv4xOn0E

what the fuck is a shmup

Still easier than Gradius III (ARC).

Can't think of any other game where getting hit ONCE is instant fucking game over.

Arcade Gradius 3 is unfair on a whole different level though.
Seriously, Rank Management combined with wonky hitboxes combined with THE FUCKING CUBES. Jesus christ.

underage please go and stay go

>tfw never had much trouble with the cubes
>tfw can sort of consistently beat level 7 too
>tfw can't even come close to beating level 10

It's time to realize that video games have changed. People no longer wish to see the medium grow and evolve, but just want to escape reality.

I like it. Makes my stomach churn sometimes but the gimmick is actually really cool and inventive. The color scheme can be kind of bothersome from a gameplay perspective but from a visual perspective Ive never seen anything quite like it. I give points for creativity even if the game is a little bit flawed.

Dariusburst CS could've revived the genre, but they decided to charge sixty fucking dollarydoos for it.

Too hard
Too niche

shmups are unironically way too hard
im not even meming

Raiden V was average compared to III & IV. That didn't help.

stop playing 2hu shit then and discover the metric fuck ton of sub-genre shmups.

The only shmup I really played was shareware Raptor and the demo of Platypus
youtube.com/watch?v=UJ-9PA9bXY0

They are hard as fuck.
But if you don't make them hard as fuck, they are boring. The genre is terrible medium for storytelling too. There is no potential in it to transform and modernize it to the current generation's audience.

At least nobody tried and succeeded yet. If they did, I bet you would see tons of shmups.

Try Tyrian

SHMUPs must be made with love. There is no love left in vidya. It's all about the sales numbers and console affiliations now.

You can craft a new weapon and effortlessly slay giant monsters. You can give me a 1UP for completing a difficult jump. But can you have the announcer say "You are the Viper!" after I've finally made it to the last stage of Gradius IV? No you can't.

>let's make the player able to SHOOT DOWN ALL INCOMING BULLETS ON THE SCREEN EFFORTLESSLY
>wow so hard

Daifukkatsu was a mistake.

What are some games beyond yagawa games with serious rank management? I want more, suiciding to lower rank is fun.

Who needs anime whores when you have qt spaceships?

>effortlessly
That's literally one of two 1cc/All-Clear replays known. Nobody else has pulled that shit off.

i'd let most of the male "ships" in parodius fuck me tbqhwy
twinbee included

user not everyone has the IQ to appreciate yagawas games it’s ok

Fuck off dude Radient Silvergun and Ikaruga have incredible lore and story's and if you dont think so you must be stupid.

youtu.be/FC0OaWrspS0

There is a concept know as easy to learn, hard to master.

You can get the controls of Gradius in the first 3 seconds but most players would have dificulty to last 3 minutes without dying the first time they play.

People hate challenge and gameplay.

It's too hard. That's probably why. And this is coming from a guy who fucking loves shmups.

that space cobra was never in the game.

It may be better than your average shmup lore, but nothing special, not up to par told by other mediums, and not nearly good enough to capture larger audiences. I believe largely due to genre limitations. Doesn't give you much room to explore or let you take in the scenery / lore tidbits, etc.

Wouldn't it be easy to just do Star Fox-style mid-stage radio calls for story?

Have 80

>Autoscrolling challenge games are limited because they aren't another genre based on exploring

Start with something easy and accessible. Go for a classic. Galaga 88, 1942, something like that.

Star Soldier on the NES was my gateway drug. Fuck I'm old.

>got gifted Deathsmiles a few months ago
>played a lot, found the side scrolling shmup to be pretty fun
>get Ikaruga afterwards by suggestion
>felt more like a puzzle game in comparison but pretty fun regardless

Getting Crimzon Clover next most likely, what other shmups on steam would you anons recommend?

Astebreed overcomes a lot of those complaints.

New cave release on steam when?

Who are you quoting?

Rotating makes it hard to guess how a bullet will or won't hit you

Check out the other Cave games on Steam too if you enjoyed Deathsmiles.

you were flying inside of him the entire time! Your role in Salamander was that of galactic colon cleaner.

Crimzon Clover is really good. Check out literally anything else by CAVE, too.

I found astebreed to be very mediocre, if not less.

Blue Revolver. It's probably one of the best indie shooters released in years.

Scratch that, one of the best shootemups in GENERAL released in the last few years.

I haven't played Blue Revolver myself. How good is the game?

Shmups would be way more popular if they went beyond the arcade structure they're welded to and experimented more.

>male ships

I don't want to know

People want value for money. Basically shmups are too short.

what shitty games are you playing that have 1 button
shot and bomb at minimum, and then you set an auto fire button so you don't get carpal tunnel
then there's probably a hyper button or something besides that
then if you're playing an arrange mode they add a bunch of new mechanics so there's even more buttons
then once you figure all that shit out you start trying to understand the scoring system which could literally take years to master

Shmups are just an autistic way to pass time
They're 100% memorization and require no skill, even on the hardest difficulties
t. stopped playing because my hand started hurting

gradius.wikia.com/wiki/Category:Fighters

Unironically one of my favorite SHMUP games along with RayStorm, RayCrisis and Thunder Force V, and because Strike Gunner is easy, it's like poison to SHMUP connoisseurs, which is a bonus.

can't go wrong with Alltynex trilogy and sora

if an e-celeb started streaming shmups the entire gen z will be all over it claiming they "grew up" with the genre and loved it all along.

But I have shmups that I bought at launch more than two decades ago that I still play regularly. What's better value than that?

Thanks anons. I'll look into Mushihimesama somewhere down the line after Crimzon Clover.
Sounds like you got a lot of positives to say about it. What about it stands out compared to others? The art style is very pretty from what I can see already.
Will check em out, cheers.

Shmupfags are based, you all are awesome.

Pic very much related, two of my all time favorites.

Thunder Force V is my fucking shit. I love the composer of the game who also made the soundtrack for Blast Wind and the Saturn version of Hyper Duel. Wonder what he's doing these days.

Is there any difference between the arcade and PS1 version of RayStorm?

As far as I know, there isn't much of a difference.

>been trying to get Thunder Force V working on PSP
>every version I've tried is corrupted

Raptor is god tier. You should definitely play Stargunner as well. Same dev and it's free and difficulty wise comparable.
