The higher you are, the easier it is to be knocked right back down to the ground. I would say that's decent game design. Make it somewhat easy to get to a high level at the beginning, but as things ramp up it becomes more and more difficult to maintain that position, necessitating constant focus as the visuals get more and more intense, requiring the player to try and ignore all the superfluous information while trying to keep their rhythm steady.
