All I know is Ib and The Witch's House. Are there other good RPG Maker horror games?

Last year, I went on a huge RPG horror game bing. I compiled this folder of 12 GB of horror games, mainly RPG maker games. I played a few of them with my roommate throughout October. Ib is probably my favorite out of all of them, but I also enjoyed Dreaming Mary and of course The Witch's House. There are more in there that I haven't played yet, but I'm coming off that high, so I"ll wait until October to be in the right mood and play them.

.flow is bretty gud

nice brotendo

Goddamn, i loved Witch's house so much.

The biggest mark of failure that Dream Diary had was soiling it's purity with that of Aoi Oni. The game would have easily been a 10/10 if not for that.

I'm quite fond of Crooked Man and it's sequels (though they were made in Wolf, not RPGMaker). Just beware of some really awful voice acting in the third and fourth games. Keith in particular is supposed to be in his late 30s but his VA sounds like a 13-year-old trying to do a tough guy voice

You saved him, right?

>4th
Oh god, there was another sequel after that train wreck Boogie Man?

Out of curiosity, what was disappointing about it?

Some things in Dream Diary are pretty bullshit
The Jellyfish in the mall for example
Does anyone know what the 120 yen item is?

>tfw got the ending where they both get out alive but forget everything
It was sad but I enjoyed it.

This site has all of the better known games.

It was a great experience, there's just something magical about RPG Maker games. I'm currently downloading a 30+ GB folder of Yume Nikki fan games as well, and I think my external HDD has a couple more games that I don't currently have on my PC. Of those fan games, however, I don't know which are good outside of the obvious ones like .flow, so I'm going to have my work cut out for me.

It's not RPGMaker, but there are a few I can name from the wolf one. Alicemare and the mogeko series, like mogeko castle or wadanohara. Dangit, gotta replay them again.

The ending is promise of reunion, so they probably remember parts of the journey or something. Or is there another ending where they don't even bother with each other?

Yes, but it was better in my opinion. It dropped the B-movie vibe and went back to a more Crooked Man kind of psychological vibe. It's about a teenage runaway and there's some ambiguity about how much is actually supernatural and how much might just be the MC's brain problems. Better voice acting over all but Keith is still in it so there's that.

It's been a long time now so I hardly remember, but I got the one where you get out with the blonde girl? I remember being incredibly pissed and playing again just to save him.

No, that's two different endings. If Garry lives but you didn't get his handkerchief or whatever it was then he and Ib don't remember what happened.

Stop posting dad.
and I'm mother's son, not yours.

fyi fags the english translation of the newest version of Yume 2kki is finally out
yume2kki.wikia.com/wiki/Downloads

Yeah it's been a while that I forgot the endings, thanks for reminding me. God I adore this game

Where have you been?

To start with, whoever made it is clearly not Kikiyama. This wouldn't necessarily be bad, except the game feels like it was handed off to someone who mostly liked the game through the fan theories, so not only is there a story (which is ill-fitting for Yume Nikki in general), but the story tries to submit the most popular fan theories out there, like implying rubrub is a rapist. It also tries to subtly imply that the events of the first game didn't happen, IE the ONE event that actually matters, so it's trying to be a retcon over it, just so it can force a really dumb happy ending.

All of this would be bad enough, but the gameplay itself is incredibly mediocre in general. Generic puzzle-platformer elements that wouldn't stand out at all without the brand it has on it. On top of this, the controls are insanely buggy and the game feels like there's a lag between button presses and action.

tl;dr its a shitshow.

Woah black betty Amberlamps.

There is a seemingly extended version of IB all alone that had a heart-wrenching ending too, I think it was called sacrifice. It doesn't seem "canon" but that broke me up in a lot of ways.

Mogeko Castle was a trip

not OP but I played this "game" 10 years ago or something when it was first getting meme'd in the west. it boils down to walking around and looking at art. it's not a game, it's not even a good walking simulator

literally the only reason this shit was a big deal was because indie games mostly weren't a thing yet so "some jap made a spooooooooky >game where you walk around doing nothing" was still a bit of a novelty. now that shit like this is ubiquitous, it doesn't stand out at all other than being an old classic. it is a meme. that's it. it wasn't even particularly impressive to me when it came out because once you get past the hype you have to admit it's just a fucking rpg maker thing where you walk around doing nothing.

please tell me what you find so fascinating about walking around looking at bog standard, dime a dozen spooky jap art. and before you say
>you gotta find the eggs
that's just an excuse to look at the art, it's not an actual mechanic

Has anyone else played this? It's shockingly well written, especially if you play the prequel right after it.

Played OFF some time ago and currently playing Hylics.
Pretty trippy.

what I'm retarded I thought you were talking about the original

why did the new yume nikki have to be so bad?
why can't we have nice things?

>what
*wait

alright fine I'm gonna kill myself

Please do.

source?

I still love you, user

we can make our own Yume Nikki games
we don't need Playism

Does Middens count as a horror game?

With blackjacks! And hookers!

Reminder that Ellen did nothing wrong.

There's the essential YN-like games

And essential absurdistcore

I actually agree with you. I didn't play it back in the day cause it never looked that appealing to me, but when I saw it on Steam I decided to give it a try. At first I was intrigued, the creepy drawings were a nice touch and so was the music, but then I started walking.. and walking.. and walking.. and thought "Well maybe the world's just too big, and I have to find a way to move forward", or maybe I had to use whatever was in each room (numbers, folk, lamps, etc) as some kind of code? Then I realized it was literally just walking and grabbing effects and it became incredibly disappointing. People always talk about it like it's the deepest game ever created, like you'll find your inner self and the meaning of life while playing it but ??? It's like you say, it's charm comes mainly from the fact that it's japanese, and the whole "spoopy drawings" thing.

I hope DSP makes a new game soon.
It's been 4 years already

You guys might have legitimately just missed out on a great experience. It's a little abstract, but the main point of the game was actually just solving the mystery of the game itself in a meta sort of fashion. When we first picked it up, we didn't know shit about it. This was also in a time where games like Yume Nikki and LSD were unheard of to our western minds and I'm sure even in Japan was entirely unusual. We had no idea what to make of it, and the act of attempting to figure it out, who made it, what they were like, what they were trying to tell us through the imagery, that was what made the game. If you go into Yume Nikki thinking in your very conventional ways of "What is the goal of the game" as opposed to "what is the purpose of this game?", you're going to miss the point by a wide margin and just ruin it for yourself. ESPECIALLY if you have the attitude of "I dun get it, muh spooky?"

It's not really scary, just weird as hell

I know its not an RPG maoer game but i really enjoyed Irisu Syndrome

htoL#NiQ is best Nikki

Does this game have an actual story? I got the first bad ending and have the sneaking suspicion that the whole game is just le wacky deaths and/or semi-perverted scenes for fetishists.

It has both

>plays all the way through dream diarrhea
>releases all the videos very quickly
>runs into at least 3 different major glitches
>makes a 40 minute review trying to find good things to say about it
>really pathetically defends all the linearity even though he sprinkles disappointment here and there
>ultimately counters all criticism in sum with "I liked it so it's fine, you don't HAVE to play it if you don't WANT to"
>all his fans circlejerk in the comments about how "good" it was, most of which are blatantly underage

>ironically comments about how "at least it's not a Yume Nikki gacha game" when the official Ao Oni app is exactly that

I'm so disappointed in him. I want to believe he's just lying to himself and trying to justify this awful release but I'm really starting to think his opinions are just bad.

I have no idea who the fuck are you speaking of
If it's some youtuber/streamer you need to kill yourself asap
The only Sup Forums approved youtuber is Saint

You mean Ross.

Who?

Don't forget that it's all incredibly linear so if you can't figure out one puzzle you'll be stuck on it until you can progress.

Also it's 99% horror 1% surrealism, which is ass.

And some puzzles are kinda cryptic
How was i supposed to know about the jellyfish in the mall?

What did you guys think of Roadkill? I think its better then middens and gingiva in almost every way, in story, art, content, ect.

I never really got the complaints for the battle system, while its clunky its not hard to get the hang of, but I honestly miss the default battle system a bit

i was actually going to watch his LP of it, just because i don't wanna buy this mess, should i?

I remember playing Ib and getting out of a slump. Does it hold up?
Just barely, I think. I remember smashing the mannequin heads wherever I went, and I think if I failed to find the key during pic related, Gary would've died.

desu I don't know
I've just felt really nostalgic for RPGMaker horror so I decided to replay a bunch
gonna replay IB tonight

threadly reminder that ME is the best fangame

Ib was fucking great god damn. Probably the best of the meme rpgmaker games.

>managed to find the key on my first try
>had no idea I could fail the section
>mfw reading that it's possible to fuck it up later on and realizing how much of a bullet I dodged
Was doing it pretty casually too since I thought I couldn't fail. I blame modern games and their need to handhold the player. Every time a game tries to pretend there's urgency they never have the balls to put you on a timer for fear that nu gamers would fail it and get upset, so it was very surprising to see that Ib didn't care about that and would fuck you up with both limited time and random placement of the key.

Freeman's VA.

Yeah. As much as I enjoy his content, he's extremely flip-floppity about his opinions. And seems to excuse any game's shortcomings as long as it was moe enough for him.

Who the fuck is Saint?

Will a cute.

you'll never replay these games for the first time

I'll never stop being mad

1bitHeart
Blank Dream
Densha
.flow
End Roll (frankly enjoyed the hell outta this one)
Forest of Drizzling Rain (if you want more Ib-like content with some ghost horror)
Irisu Syndrome
Mermaid Swamp
Mogeko Castle
OFF
The Strange Men series

...

OFF BABY

Blank Dream was pretty good. If you like a cute suicidal schoolgirl going through the afterlife with the Witch's House style death traps, along with the some music Ib used, you'll probably like it. The story has a fairly fucked up plot twist.

And Mishiro is a qt.

Also, one of the female characters is a lesbian.

Mad Father fucking sucks.

Why?

...

i'm still mad

Has there been any newer ones lately? I've more or less seen all the popular and niche ones that came out years ago, but it seems there hasn't been anything new since.

Yume Nikki Dream Diary
Hylics 2

>being mad over a happy ending

Yes, it's fine. He's usually pretty quiet and one of the least obnoxious LPers out there, especially because he doesn't use a facecam and manages his volume levels alright. Watch the playthrough, skip out on the review video because it is a mess.

I feel the same way. I'm not mad at him enough to unsub because I also like his other content but it does irk me. He KNOWS it's a bad nostalgia cashgrab and he KNOWS the price is expensive for what it is, but he doesn't care. It's kinda sad.

Yep, there some bits here and there.
>the whole game is just le wacky deaths and/or semi-perverted scenes for fetishists
That bassically all of his games tho.

Already played Drema Diary and was disappoint. Next. The fuck is Hylics?

Lurk moar

The horror is boring and the ending is terrible.

...

Oh, that game. I thought it sounded familiar. Next.

Ib is a masterpiece! it does so much with so little and the music, despite it apparently being bought stock music, does the job very well.

>Hello Charlotte - episodes 1, 2, and 3
>The God of Crawling Eyes
>Desert Nightmare
>Schuld
>Dreaming Mary

Is this a sip for ants?

>I feel the same way.
Same. He's one of the very few tubers I bother with, but I acknowledge his opinions tend to be shit. Especially if the game had enough animu gurls for him.

As for why he's giving Dream Diary a pass, probably nostalgia and the fact the games utilizes a lot of things in older games he's played. He didn't seem to be letting up too much on it, but he sounded pretty dismissive of the legit criticisms against the game.

>Next
Lose some arrogance, nigga

Having a better taste than you sheep ain't no arrogance, faggot.

Hotaru no Nikki was alright if you omit the fact that they've made the exact same game (and soon to be two) afterwards.
That picture-book style really was just a poor attempt to hide complete lack of good animations.

I also want to say that there are some newer ones I'm aware of but they're in Japanese, and afaik no one is making an effort to translate them.

Here are their titles in case you can read moonrunes for the dialogue
>Dance in the Mort
>GhostHospital
>Steel Howling
>Witch's Heart

Hope that helps, a lot of them look interesting and I hope they get translated.

)
>Hotaru no Nikki was alright if you omit the fact that they've made the exact same game (and soon to be two) afterwards.
I doubt you played them if you honestly think that.

i was honestly surprised at his more positive review even with all the glitches and desu legit criticism that he had of it. the ao oni Easter egg and that's it.

i do think he's trying to give it a pass because he seems to want to encourage people to waste money on it (even if he did say "get it on sale") so maybe the gacha game becomes reality somehow

>made the exact same game
Rose just share a lot of similarities. If anything it's solid step up in term of game. Because holy lord, Hotaru isn't really enjoyable expirience as game.
>poor attempt to hide complete lack of good animations
How this is a bad thing tho?

I 100%-ed hotaru and started Rose in Twilight. Couldn't stomach it because it felt like the exact same game but with slightly different mechanics. That golem shit was so tedious and the art style was extremely same-ish. I am not trolling you, user, but after that I've been left very disappointed. Probably not even going to pick up the latest one. Sorry.

Thanks. I'm learning moonspeak anyway, so I'd be fine with playing them in old fashion nipponese. Got some links?

>How this is a bad thing tho?
Looked real cheap, I guess.

it has much better controls and puzzles than hotaru with an entirely different narrative perspective (be the girl rather than fairy leading her) with terrific sound design but sure, your loss...
