Why isn't being an Ideas Guy a serious thing?

Why isn't being an Ideas Guy a serious thing?

I'm not talking about "duhhh so the game will have dragons and magic", I'm talking thinking up entire weapon upgrade systems, character backstories and development, direction of the art style, everything.

All that would be left would be to code and draw shit.

it's called the game director and even then they all have coding and art experience themselves

Designers are a real thing. They just usually contribute in some other way though even if just prototyping or drafting.

This. Why should you be idea guy if you have no clue if the shit your making up is do able if not something that will take fucking decades to make.

cause i can draw and have better ideas than you

How are you supposed to get in as a pure ideas guy? If you've never worked on a game, why should they take your word that your ideas are any better than the ideas of the guy who actually knows how to code/draw them too

You get interviewed off the record, no idea stealing, and share a small amount of your ideas.

I'm not sure if i'm getting my point across adequately here. I'm talking fully fleshed out games in my head, and then giving them to someone to code.

Because you can express them better, a lot of game designer don't actually know much coding or art stuff, they just can express ideas really well, specifically why something is a good idea and why it will be fun and why it would be different and why people would buy it.

> Why isn't being an Ideas Guy a serious thing?
It is though. The reason it's a meme is because on the armature level the 'ideas' guys are self imposed and have no real experience.

If you're actually a talent ideas guy, you earned that spot by doing another job and showed actual talent in that area earning the trust of your co-workers.

They have to know if what the fuck theyre spouting can be reasonably implemented into a game.

Are you kidding me?

Kojima and Kamiya are both idea men, and Sup Forums can't stop sucking their dick

No they don't really, prototyping begins and design changes from there.

at that point it's a legal issue. are you selling them an IP? are you selling art assets? an engine? why would they hire you instead of just buying your idea outright?

the whole "Ideas Guy" meme is based off exactly "duhhh so the game will have dragons and magic" type shit
you're describing actual areas people have jobs doing

>buying the idea outright

this could work

>a lot of game designer don't actually know much coding or art stuff
Sounds like you're talking completely out your ass.

>How are you supposed to get in as a pure ideas guy? If you've never worked on a game
You don't. You get promoted to being the ideas guy after you have displayed your ability to share you ideas and actually implement them well within the team while doing whatever job you were originally hired for.

Select 'design'

If you can do all of those things, you should at least have some working knowledge of the other things otherwise you are a weak link in the chain.

Maybe this is why we don't have any good games anymore.

Hiring someone to implement the ideas of the game, the core thing that will make or break it, just because he's some asshole programmer, is literally retarded.

>i know how to make camshafts for car engines, so i'm going to come up with the design of the car as a thing on the side like it doesn't require it's own skill

A good way to show your value is to show how say given a scenario where we need to scale back things, how can you change the game to still be fun, show your adaptability. The reason you are a part of the team is because you can direct and express these ideas and get them across to a team. Hell if you have to crudely draw out the things that are harder to express like how a UI looks or the basic design of a level.

>Bosses shouldn't know the steps and requirements of development
This is why most jobs are a pain in the ass

So they should just hire some literally who with no idea how games are actually made. You get 2 things out of this, the most generic game ever or development hell.

that's what kojima is

Kojima actually used to code once upon a time

Yes, but it shouldnt take decades of hanging on for the small chance that it pays off. It should just be a thing like doing the OST or art.
