This game holds a special place in my heart. Before going off to college I played nothing but GTA: SA on PS2, and I remember getting my first 360 is 2009 or something and just dying to play this after watching some 4PP and SSoH.

But the games got worse after San Andreas. Sure they look better and have larger maps, but that's about all they have over the older titles. 4 and 5 are not the same as the first era game GTA. The gameplay has entirely shifted.

They're not comparable IMO. The 3D era just have a different charm to them than GTA IV. I agree V was missing something though. But I don't see a point in trying to crown one GTA game definitively 'the best one'.
For me IV had the best story telling and setting. Also Vice City was like a cool 80s movie but San Andreas was just over the top, which they tried to immatate with V. But I think the series is at it's best when it's more serious with the comedy more in the background like Vice City and IV.

VC's was serious in a stylish pulp kind of way, where as IV's seriousness was more noir inspired.

To me the best gta is sa. The worst is probably one of the city stories. Personally I didn't care for 4 or 5 all that much. 4 took itself way too seriously (not counting the dlc of course) and what 5 had going for it was quickly drained by the second half of the story and online focus instead of adding to the story or single player like 4 did. To me sa still reigns as having the perfect balance of seriousness, cheesy parody, and engaging story.
