I can only assume he didn't suck up enough to new EA management and got squeezed out as a result. Ultimately who you are and what you do depends on your publisher in these cases and EA surely promoted their yes men more and more. It's no coincidence all notable individuals have pretty much left Bioware and who are still there are clearly only doing so because A) they're on borrowed time or B) there's no immediate replacement.

Thematically speaking, it's always about the injustice of massive megacorperations gaining so much power that they're free to do with humanity as they wish. Technology aides corporations in this fashion because an overabundance of simulation and ease of acess allows the same corps you work for to understand every aspect of your life. It's an extremely flawed game and it hasn't aged well at all but it's still a really good game.

Cyberpunk has always been a hard sci-fi exploration of certain kinds of moral and social issues we haven't fully had to deal with yet but reasonably might. Transhumanisn in general is a kind of scary concept and it's not exactly far from where we are now.

Trying to inject identity politics into a genre already built around exploring identity in a world where the individual doesn't matter and one can be augmented or replaced or changed or overwritten, that's a good way to fucking ruin the world you're building and the stories you're trying to tell.

That is Orwellian dystopia not cyberpunk dystopia you fucking troglodyte.

Dealing with identity politics in a cyberpunk setting would be very interesting. Investigating the issue of group identity and political leaning, corps taking advantage of growing tribalism to control the populace, and presenting the dangers of extreme individualism and isolationism in a turbulent society would be fun themes to explore.
