Yu Suzuku confirmed III ends on a cliffhanger, but also said that if IV and future entries are released development would proceed a lot smoother since the team's familiarity with engine tools will mean no learning curve at the start. Also during an interview when asked about a Shenmue HD Remaster his response was that he’s not at liberty to talk about it at this moment, which is important since every-time he's been asked about it until now he's only said that would SEGA's decision.

What a dumbass
Maybe Suzuki will have the good sense to just give us an arc break with some unanswered questions (like the end of Shenmue II Disc 2) after dealing with Niao Sun. I swear if Ryo gets left in another isolated cave...

The HD remasters are the only reason why I backed Shenmue III, I have no faith in the game itself.
>Yu suzuku
Well, I could butchered that worse. Also pick a Ryo.
2016 is the only one that doesn't look like a creepy doll, maybe it's the lighting
I really hope this isn't bad.

English translation of the interview isn't done yet but Google says:
>GamersFlag: Now that Shenmue III is well advanced, can you tell us, without much detail, of course, if the end of the game is likely to be open and suggest a Shenmue IV ? Is it a possibility that you left yourself?
>Yu Suzuki: Yes, the end will be open for a sequel. It will not be possible to finish with this third episode.
>GamersFlag: Yes, basically, you had planned more than three episodes.
>Yu Suzuki: Yes, and it would not be possible to finish here without ripping off.
So maybe it won't be as bad of a cliff hanger as some impressions of this remark suggested. It will depend on the execution I guess if get a hard break or a soft suggestive transition. S2 ended like the former in the cave, while S1 was the latter ending on the cruise ship to Hong Kong.
