How does a game with literal 1996 graphics have performance issues even on high end PCs?
>tfw Ken Silverman wasn't involved in this game's development
Where are the hitscan enemies? The level design is fucking perfect for barely visible random cultists on a distant roofs and windows draining your hp every time you step outside.
Pushing an old engine to its absolute limits does that.
>female protagonist
Ignore them and they will go away they said...
They were always there.
because it is the same old Build engine from 1996, cranked up to 11.9. and a shitton added stuff that was originally not even dreamed of at the time it was made. If you can't see past the retro graphics and what Ion Maiden's Build version actually has to offer compared to the original Build games then you are beyond redemption.
They bundled a potato version of Eduke engine with the demo that has fucked frame pacing, if you run the game with a framerate monitor you'll see you're actually hitting the frame cap all the time it just looks like it's running like shit.
Their internal builds don't have this problem.
Wait, really? I was excited because I thought that could run on my toaster
I think deep down inside the engine is still hooked onto what it sees as Dos.
At least it is better than DosBox.
Kind of wish it had no reloading
It's not using EDuke, it's using build engine.
...
Shadow Warrior had reloading.
>having a problem with literally half of all humans because you can't get laid
/our game/
It's a fork of Eduke, the window title says as much when you try to launch them simultaneously and it has the same setup menu.
I wish they did it in a more subtle manner, but it still makes me happy.
Bombshell was a character created by 3D Realms before you were even born you little dick sucker. Follow your own advice and fuck off. You are trying to fit in way too hard. There is a difference between modern forced sjw libshit femen pc multiculti pushing agenda for virtue signaling and choosing a character's appearance because of an artistic choice. Playable female characters have been a thing since the 80s. Fuck a duck you little assbirth. Not an issue in this case.
Are you fucking serious holy
I'm pretty sure he's being a retard on purpose for the sole point of baiting for (you)s.
I understand your feelings though, user. It always does me good to see some people here that still get genuinely angry over stupid faggots. Because it means they still care.
It's a heavily modified Build Engine, and since one of the devs of this game is TerminX from EDuke, it's obvious it has some parts of his source port. Even Ken Silverman confirmed that.
Old engines are not optimized for new hardware.
There are many Doom 2 wad that I can barely run even though I can run the latest Doom on maximum settings. And i'm running the wad on a modern sourceport.
There are many reasons for that. Lack of GPU based culling, lack of world geometry optimisation which leads to way too many drawcalls, old space partitioning, etc.
For instance, games like HL1 and Quake 3 ran every triangles on the CPU, nowadays this isn't doable for the polycount we're aiming for. Not only that, but because modern drivers are dropping support for direct mode we're geting even WORSE performance than we did before.
Keep in mind the game doesn't have literal 1996 graphics. You're way overestimating the amount of details in 1996 games.
The devs should have just used GZDoom if they can't be bothered to optimize EDuke32 to make it handle larger levels more gracefully
How would you make it more subtly than that?
Well I wouldn't put it on a big building.
He didn't realize it though.
>literal 1996 graphics
It literally doesn't have tho. If a game in 1996 had Ion Maiden level of visuals, nobody would be able to run it. Hell the physics alone are beyond any other Build game out there.
How they handle culling is a big deal since it used to be cpu based
also yeah there are plenty of doom 2 mods that can tank the framerate with fancy effects and lighting
iirc the duke world tour edition had problems too
>just used GZDoom instead of eduke32
It's time to stop posting
On the Steam forums the devs claim they're working on optimization and that it should get better along the way
>Keep in mind the game doesn't have literal 1996 graphics.
The Build engine went on till 98-99. This game is more like, what if we had another Build game around that time.
This being said it still uses only 256 colours.
>Hell the physics alone are beyond any other Build game out there.
Not sure what you mean, by pushing around sprites isn't a big exploit. Enemies move, and they drop down to the floor if they fall/jump from a certain height, same thing for items here.
A game like Redneck Rampage: Rides Again which came out in 1998 had high res textures, driveable vehicules, and some highly detailed level design.
>Ion Maiden
>20$ for a fucking MOD
you fags are desperate
>This being said it still uses only 256 colours.
and disk space usage for the Preview Campaign is less than 40mb
if you take out the opengl renderer, which you don't even have to use, and maybe cut the levels into more maps; to me it looks we could have ran this in 1998
rng hitscan enemies always sucks imo, especially on the higher difficulties.
Anyway I'm legit hype. Will probably buy it if it still looks good at release.
most games are mods built on established engines if you want to look at it that way
why not just use unity then ffs
>/our game/
that meme became mainstream a long time ago user
it's not the levels, it's the skybox that's probably causing all the problems. If they did it the same way other Duke mods did it, it's basically rendering a second scene behind the first scene and I doubt they have vision based culling on it. Eduke32 can run much larger levels than Bombshells stuff no problem.
What does palette emulation does?
I liked the Shadow Warrior style of everyone, even the player dying in seconds to guns and instantly to explosives.
Nigga he's not the only artist.
>see trailer
>wanna play
>15 bucks
>early motherfucking access
I hate this timeline so goddamn much.
He deserved better
Ken Silverman was hardly involved in most of the BUILD games aside from like, Duke 3D.
Even then, why does him being involved or not involved matter?
It's not your standard early-access tho. It won't be stuck in early-access for 5 years or anything like that. But I agree, odd choice.
EDUKE32 IS THE BUILD ENGINE YOU FUCKING RETARD HOLY SHIT
He was, he even said it himself.
He aways had to fly to california to help the devs.
There is no excuse for the shit performance and optimization.
I don't give a fuck if they're using an old engine. Graphics of this quality with performance this bad should be lambasted and shunned from all of video games. It's lazy and talentless. Just make a better engine at that point.
Stop justifying lazy bullshit because it's not EA or Ubisoft. Indie games are mostly shit for this exact reason.
Also
>stronk womyn don't need no man
That's a great sign nowadays. I'm sure the story will be great and will feature 0 toddler-level political commentary lectures about whatever backward ass beliefs the oversheltered manchildren devs have.
This shit is pretty fun. It's neat how it has such direct inspirations it's following so purely, yet manages to feel like its own thing. I hope there's more levels like the first one than the second, though. And the performance is fixed.
Still, between this and Dusk 2018's looking to have some damn good retrofps. It's real nice to see these nostalgiabaiting games actually fucking having proper, flowing level designs. It's been so long since we've had any good classic FPS that wasn't waveshit like serious sam or procgen shit like various indie garbage.
Because technology. He did some great shit with voxels which could be used in vidya. Fuck, he could make a new engine based on voxel tech
had to fly to Texas and Washington*
Fix'd
It's not even the engine, it's the OpenGL renderer. It's using a super old version of OpenGL that causes it to run poorly on modern GPUs.
They've already said they're fixing it.
>game made with technology and tools from the fucking 90's
>asking for $15
fuck that, I could play something made in build for free that will blow this the fuck out of the water
Amid Evil should be out in a week or so as well.
>muh story in a build engine game
Nothing wrong with early access that's releasing finished singleplayer content periodically. That's really just a release format, rather than a development format which is the problem with early access.
Also, I dunno about ion maiden specifically but I know some devs have tried to just release periodically with preview stuff and valve actively tells them to make it early access, they don't have a whole lot of choice.
OBSESSED
I don't get this meme
also Amid evil and overload
Like what exactly?
Didn't stop Blood from having a story.
It is about Trump and the gun control debate.
Tilt your head 90 degrees. See the gun? Work from there.
That too, but most people haven't gotten to play that yet, so it's harder to throw out as an example.
I have though, and while personally I really liked it, it's harder to just say it's straight good like dusk or this. The combat sort of flows in a odd way that's kinda unique and some people seem to really love, others seem to not be able to stand.
Overload is tight shit though, more people need to be aware of that.
Woah, is that a Tetris reference????
Is one of those the games with the randomly generated levels like Strafe? Because that's going to be cancer no matter what.
I want the randomly generated roguelike fps genre to fuck off and die. Dusk and Maiden at least have cool flowing level design.
>Also
>stronk womyn don't need no man
>That's a great sign nowadays. I'm sure the story will be great and will feature 0 toddler-level political commentary lectures about whatever backward ass beliefs the oversheltered manchildren devs have.
making a male protagonist just so it's not female is also kind of toddler-level political commentary. most people don't care that men are actually stronger than women with a video game character. i think the violence level of the game might help that it won't be full GIRL POWER though.
>Also, I dunno about ion maiden specifically but I know some devs have tried to just release periodically with preview stuff and valve actively tells them to make it early access, they don't have a whole lot of choice.
Spot on.
Amid Evil has handmade levels too, go check it out on YouTube or something
>what is early access
Dusk would be better if they scrapped the entire first episode, which is literal dogshit in terms of level design. The second episode is alright.
>character was created as literally female duke nukem so they could have the most blatant technically-not-duke they could get away with
>reee female protag, must be for muh politics
Jesus christ you're autistic.
You're right about the performance though, they should have fixed that before going public considering nobody was fucking waiting on this.
Amid Evil is handbuilt levels (really fucking pretty ones too, but youtube quality fucking murders the aesthetic so don't be too quick to dismiss it).
Overload is also hand-built but can feel kinda samey. That's more because it's the most autistically dedicated recreation of another game you'll ever goddamn see, which is neat because Descent is rad as shit but also just feels a bit weird, with everything feeling a bit plain and blocky.
>Jesus christ you're autistic.
I think he's just pissed about the optimization issues and didn't realize he was kind of going off topic and ranting about modern problems with female protagonists being shitty, I think he'd be fine with it if it's not just a female protag for a political statement
I find the really garish colors of Amid Evil truly off-putting. It's like babby's first dabbling in colored lighting, using only over saturated lights.
No, Amid evil is basically a modern homage to heretic in the same way Dusk is a homage to quake but imo amid evil is a bit better and more consistent.
Overload is A modern Descent with some modern bells and whistles
>everything feeling a bit plain and blocky.
because it's build in the same way as the old games with deformable cube segments, they do have new tech for caves/ice walls etc that gives it a rough natural look, it isn't chock full of fancy props though
The fact that the dev of that game thought it was ever a good idea to do the randomly generated levels meme shows how little he actually knows and cares about old school fps. Just another poser like the Strafe devs. Or am I mistaken and I've gotten one of the nostalgiabait fps games mixed up with another? Was that game originally supposed to be randomly generated levels and then he backtracked on his decision and put together some modular parts he had to make some "handmade" ones?
Level design is literally 60%+ of the gameplay flow of a Quakelike.
I respect them for even trying, unlike the cop-out artists making roguelite fps games. You are right in that ep2 is far better than ep1.
You've gotten mixed up, yeah. Amid Evil is 100% handcrafted levels.
Come on dude, you know what I meant.
20$ is a rip-off...
What fucking game am I thinking of then? There is 100% another nostalgiabait "look guys I'm quake 2" fps that is just randomly generated levels. It's not Strafe even though it actually kinda looks similar.
>overload
Oh, totally, I understand why, it's just that you could get people looking at it and thinking it's just randomly assembled blocks because they don't realize just how hardcore authentic that game is.
At no point was Amid Evil slated to have random level designs.
Fuck I miss Forsaken. Going to have to try that out
Beats me, nothing comes to my mind from that description.
How are the secrets in the game? Are they the "mash interact button on every wall in hopes to find something" kind or are they logically placed, so to speak?
Maybe Apocryph? It's so awful it makes me physically ill.
you know forsaken EX is a thing right?
also you can get the PC version for free github.com
it's also completely different from the 64 version, music is worse though
A few of them require you to find hidden switches, sometimes really well hidden. A few others require careful jumping (sometimes over pits), some are hidden among the scenery and some require you to shoot something. They're good secrets overall.
They're hidden really damn well, but they normally don't seem to be interact mashing. There's a lot of the damn things too and I could only find a few though.
Sounds great.
>Ion Maiden
>Amid Evil
>Dusk
Truly 2018 is the year of the actually good 90s FPS revivals.
It depends on how much work they're really putting into updating the engine though, it's not like they just threw together some skins and maps
>testing a version for the switch
Neat
Are they really making one? How is Switch going to handle it?
Found it, it's this garbage: www.gibhard.com
I guess the aesthetic is closer to a mix of Strife and Quake 2 than solely Quake 2.
"Randomly generated levels are HARDCORE OLD SCHOOL, like every great classic fps game had them dude" said no one ever.
My 3DS can handle Duke Nukem 3D.
This game looks like shit and you're allowing nostalgia to take control of your wallet. You will all be disappointed by this garbage if you ever end up playing it.
Reminder that Ken didn't even know about this game until Yesterday.
Now that people are at it can the release spiritual successor to Heretic 2?
Then again I'm fine with successor to the first Heretic too.
Amen.
*boots up PUBG*
Amid Evil is already the spiritual successor to Hexen 2 in aesthetics
