You can do kid link dungeon out of order to some extent and adult link out of order too. The game's progression is not tied to the story (except desert temple) but rather to gameplay. I used to go for the hammer and hookshot and do the temples that I enjoyed the most first, like the shadow and desert temple, and do forest and water last.

An actual return to roots Zelda, the open world in the first Zelda was not the focus, it was a maze you needed to solve to find the each dungeon. Things like caves or sidequests or minigames were never the focus of early Zelda, they were there but in smaller numbers and meant only to give you something to discover until you found the next dungeon.
