They make a point to innovate with each new instalment. Change for the sake of change is usually stupid, but when every sequel is in a whole different universe then if you want more of X then just whine until they make a sequel (X-2), sometimes they'll even do it without anyone asking for it lol (XIII-2,XIII-3)
Only issue with it is that with current gen development costs it takes forever for them to make a new one, and they expect it to be some generation-defining milestone every single time.
BTW is FF:Tactics worth playing? Never played it before and I want to try out some strategy games but when its mentioned on here people just reaffirm that Tactics is good without giving detail

The only entry which actually innovated anything was FFII, everything else is either copying from Dragon Quest with a twist or recycling previous mechanics copied from Dragon Quest or Ultima and add some new twist, then in 00's they've kind of expanded their horizon and began copying from series other than DQ or Ultima.
Oh, and of course, the spinoffs being basically poor clones of other games with the FF brand sticked on them, like FFT.
