DDLC is genuinely awful
You first OP.
...
>implying I ever liked DDLC
Nobody implied that
I assumed you were implying with your image that I only began to hate DDLC after it got popular and that I previously liked it like the caricature in the image
It had potential. If they diluted it by spreading everything across another chapter, it might have been a little better.
I can't believe they went with the "le hyperrealistic eyes" creepypasta meme though
What did he do?
homestuck was literally ruined by the author though
I assumed you didn't actually play it and just hated it because it's popular, or played it with the pretense of "I bet it's shit" because it's popular
dan salvato is a soyboy
Archeage hands down
Another internet tough guy, eh? Don't act like you weren't scared while reading it.
>I can't believe they went with the "le hyperrealistic eyes" creepypasta meme though
I don't know that creepypasta but the realistic eyes on Yuri were pretty creepy in DDLC
Yeah, nah, the words "hyper realistic" don't invoke any actual horror just because you splatter them on everything. If they do, you're probably 14 years old.
It's not a singular story but a trend in stories that happened in the early 2010s. One such example was the whole "Squidward's Suicide" creepypasta.
Oh well, then I guess you just didn't get it.
Not him, but if there was some actual gameplay I would had been scared no matter the quality, but going creepypasta in a vn is just hilarious.
...
There's nothing to "get" in DDLC, you just play it. It's strong point is immersing yourself in it; Act 2 is amazing in that it doesn't jumpscare you but enough weird shit or shit that's just slightly "off" happens that it keeps you on edge. Just the right frequency too. But in terms of "understanding" it's pretty simple; it's just not effective if you're a multitaskfaggot
Nice fucking potato logic.
Then you used that image incorrectly somehow.
I've played it and it's just amazingly shallow reaction-bait designed to go viral through youtubers and streamers.
It has no substance and the entirety of the plot is just build up to a lame twist. The twist isn't original, which isn't inherently bad, but the writer fails to use the idea to produce anything significant or new with the concepts and themes the story presents. It all leads nowhere precisely because of the game's primary intent, to produce reactions rather than be an engaging and meaningful narrative.
Then there's all the shit about how the writer is an egotistical little twat who thinks he's made some amazing deconstruction of the visual novel medium.
Thing is there isn't anything that can actually hurt you without the story ending there or pretending it didn't happen. It's a rollercoaster ride. You just enjoy it until it's over.
It's one thing to read about it, it's another thing to actually see it. I didn't think it was terribly scary, but it made me uncomfortable, because it was uncanny. Even more so because you couldn't quite focus on the face, you had to read the text and felt the gaze in the corner of your eye.
Same thing with Natsuki. The necksnap-LE-EVIL-SMILE-part was ridiculously retarded, but the part that had her eyes and mouth blocked out was unsettling. Not scary, just unpleasant. Kinda like in this video:
youtube.com
That stuff is effective, I think. As long as you don't go complaining that it failed to do something that it probably did not mean to do (being muh scary creepypasta)
That said, I liked DDLC but it wasn't super-amazing, and like the umpteenth meta-game to release in these past few years, and didn't bring anything new to the table. It was free though, so that's fine.
Why? Because he doesn't like nu-Sup Forums trying to drag him into politics to troll liberals?
Dan salvato is a faggot, there's no denying that. But saying it's "reaction-bait" is using Sup Forums buzzwords for the sake of using Sup Forums buzzwords; I considered myself a pretty seasoned VN player and I still very much enjoyed DDLC, despite the fact that I wish it was longer, had more slice-of-life segments and there were more than 1.5 endings.
Sure, the meat story itself is quite simple but that doesn't mean it's just for "reactions", that's stupid. In fact, I'd say it discourages reaction-type shit because there's like 1 jumpscare the entire game. I very much liked the brand of psychologial "horror" that DDLC presented, and I wish more were like it. It was effective to me, as a player, and that's all that's needed.
>those tits
i-is this official art??
It's by the VN's artist, posted on Monika's official twitter account
>unironically good devs making terrible vidya
>wish it had more slice-of-life segments
I wish I could hate you to death.
Binding of Isaac
Hotdogs, Horseshoes & Hand Grenades
Fucking hell... maybe Monica wasn’t so bad after all, her tits are great
Heroes & Generals
I really like Dan and I didn't even know he was the dude who made that game for a long time. I only knew of him from watching him speedrun Yoshi's Story.
Why would Roll have a skintight bunny suit on?
>Not worshipping Monika
Kingdom Come
just kidding, it blows
>I really wish Valve would spit on their games/series
Hunt Down the Freeman would've been official game if it was for big players like Ubisoft or EA
I wanted to make out with Yuri some more before the game was like "hey u reached the end lmao"
You know that finishing an Uno game with a +4 or color change cards makes you lose right ?
Why not?
faggot
Because
Monika has rockin' tits!
This, i hadn’t realised.
how long did you guys sit with just Monika at the end?
>unironically good devs making terrible vidya
not very good devs then are they
>Then there's all the shit about how the writer is an egotistical little twat who thinks he's made some amazing deconstruction of the visual novel medium.
He certainly has an annoying high horse attitude, but he's also not wrong in some of the things he said about typical VN tropes. He said he wrote the protagonist in DDLC to be the typical oblivious, unlikeable VN protagonist and it shows, and it's true that DDLC did things very few VNs do. The word "deconstruction" is stupid.
house rules
Not too long, was busy downloading the after-story-mod that is focused solely on her
There is an element in the game blatantly designed to target streamers while they're streaming the game. It was clearly made with that intent in mind. Dan Salvato also participated in stream chats shortly after the game released and often took note on twitter of popular people playing the game. The game is short, such that streamers won't be entirely deterred from playing it on stream. The first act gets laughs through acting like a 'generic' vn with overplayed tropes and choosing what girl to chase. Sayori's suicide is a jumpscare and the entirety of the second act is kept afloat through periodic events of weird shit that keep getting weirder. Then it ends with the twist of Monika doing everything out of a yandere-type love for the protagonist, which is very popular with normalfags
As a horror game, it's decent at best. As a narrative it is downright awful. I doubt the writer would ever manage to do anything with a longer game or more slice-of-life segments, because in the end he just appeals to sensationalism.
touché
When was steins;gate "cool"?
Feel like it was always a just a thing people liked but never got the kind of ridiculous popularity and terrible fanbase of the others?
>terrible devs
this is the dude that developed 20XX for melee, in what way is he terrible?
>got so butthurt about trapsuki memes he bitched to reddit to stop
If he wrote the protagonist to be the typical oblivious VN protagonist he failed, he actually has quite a bit more depth to him than most other protags in the medium
oh, so nothing that has to do with GAME DEVELOPMENT
>visual novel
>game development
pick one
That's grasping at straws. Monika's jumpscare when the game detects OBS or Xplit running is just a neat little thing because if you know people are gonna be streaming your game, what the hell not.
>Sayori's suicide is a jumpscare
Very questionable
>entirety of the second act is kept afloat through periodic events of weird shit that keep getting weirder
That's a strong point, and the best part of the game; no jumpscares, enough weird or off-putting shit happening that it keeps you on your toes just when you're coming out of it
>Then it ends with the twist of Monika doing everything out of a yandere-type love for the protagonist, which is very popular with normalfags
This just reads like bitter /r9k/ trite with the normalfags bit; it makes sense in the narrative. If you knew you were trapped in a game and the only hope of contact with the real word was the dude playing it, you probably wouldn't give a shit about deleting the other bits of the game.
>I doubt the writer would ever manage to do anything with a longer game or more slice-of-life segments
The first act was decent enough on its own IMO
can you literally not read?
>We ruin everything and then someone told us to stop
bout time tbqhwy
A proper way to go against 'typical VN tropes' would be to make an actually interesting protagonist who is his own character and not a bumbling self-insert. A proper way to go against 'typical VN tropes' would be to write an actually good narrative like many other VNs have done and not pretending that VNs are all moege/dating sims.
Dan Salvator pokes fun at tropes but still uses them instead of presenting anything new in exchange.
Were they supposed to be realistic?
The ywere creepy, but not because they were realistic, they just moved a lot in a game where the character barely move and it was dark and yuri was staring straight at you. But they weren't realistic.
...
>the product is good but the people who made them is shit
what did they mean by this
How? He's just as much of an obnoxious brainlet as all the other VN protags.
>Don't kill yourself, I know what's best for you
>My suicidal friend literally shouted in agony when I turned her down yesterday, when I learned she has sucidial thoughs, NOT GONNA WAKE HER UP CAUSE THAT'S A BIT TOO MUCH
>game decent enough
>monika is a huge normalfag
>like, fucking stereotype on the flesh
>talks shit about the rest of the cast
If he was going for irony he fuckig nailed it.
>a bumbling self-insert
If you self-insert as the DDLC protag I question the amount of brain cells you have. He's unrelatable and unlikeable in every possible way
Exactly what is sounds like? What's your fucking point?
She's a hypocrite, and that's kind of the point
do you think that people waifuing monika are missing the point of ddlc?
He nailed it then.
Dungeon Defenders. The first game. Pretty much nailed it out of the park, then did a few scummy things but mostly kept the game solid. After the final larger dlc they stopped caring and abandoned the game, allowing for rampant cheating and a destruction of the economy. The game became near impossible to start off and enjoy (more so recommend to new players) without saying "hurr durr just cheat"
DD2 released and holy fuck that game missed the point. I can't recall indie devs making a sequel so poorly before. If it wasn't free and they charged even $5 the steam score would be under 40%.
The generic VN protag WOULD check. The average VN protag is generally inoffensively nice, and really doesn't have any thoughts that don't relate to THE GRIL or NOTHING ATALL, while this guy is kind of a dick, clearly debating on whether or not it would be too intrusive to check up on her. He treats Sayori kind of harshly but obviously blames himself for what happens no matter what. He's also kind of forgetful, making a promise to her, than immediately going back on it because he forgot, then immediately regretting it.
"Obnoxious brainlet" is honestly more personality than "doormat".
If you can't tell that the protagonist is designed to be a bland character because its intended for the reader to self-insert into him then you're a fucking retard. The game basically forgets about the MC's existence in order to establish the interest of Monika's in the reader, which is fucking stupid because the story would be immensely more interesting if the main character was actually separate from the reader and we could see how he would play a part in the ending.
Still am
Even installed the Monika After Story mod
>and not pretending that VNs are all moege/dating sims.
You don't need to think that all VN protags are generic to poke fun at the ones that are.
>If you can't tell that the protagonist is designed to be a bland character because its intended for the reader to self-insert into him then you're a fucking retard.
I have quite a few friends that have played this and after I played this game I did go out and gather some reactions to it; literally everybody found the protag to be obnoxious in his interactions with Sayori, especially towards the end.
>the story would be immensely more interesting if the main character was actually separate from the reader and we could see how he would play a part in the ending.
Jesus christ I'm glad you didn't write the fucking game, that would be dumb as hell. Why in the world would Monika ever give a shit about anything the MC does or says at that point?
Nigga, you name him and he literally has no default name. He was a self-insert before the story started.
>there are people who won't let go of DDLC
kawata shoujo 2.0
Just looked it up. The long and short of it seems to be
>Stop being so fucking annoying about your epic trap-meme
>Stop shifting what the game is about to some retarded meme
If that's honestly the worst he did, he still seems pretty ok to me
I for one liked Uno. I don't think they did bad with it , but I guess to each their own.
>Monika's jumpscare when the game detects OBS or Xplit running is just a neat little thing because if you know people are gonna be streaming your game, what the hell not.
What is it?
Why did Berserk, Eva, Dark Souls and TF2 get mixed up with all that other garbage?
Sure, he's certainly meant to be a faceless vessel with very little actual personality for the sole, does that make my point that he's unrelatable, unlikable and a total brainlet invalid? He does things nobody with half a brain cell would do.
Here is his post
I don't care if this game is reddit sjw tumblr buzzword buzzword garbage I wanna fuck her she is so cute
The point of that image went way over your fucking head and you're probably part of the fucking problem.
Just because they didn't like him doesn't mean they didn't self-insert as him. Did they make choices mimicking what they wanted as if they were in his place? Like going after a certain girl in the first act? Then they self-inserted,
>Why in the world would Monika ever give a shit about anything the MC does or says at that point?
Obviously she wouldn't give a shit, and that's the point. MC would have to deal with realizing he's just a part of the program while Monika essentially cucks him with the reader, it would add to the weight of Monika's character/her twist and the separation from the in-game world as the narrative focuses on Monika and the reader alone.
It's pretty reasonable and agreeable?
I didn't ever let her a chance to talk, the first thing I did after she deleted everyone was deleting her
Homestuck has never been good
Steins Gate isn't popular
Spore
Minecraft
StarCraft 2
Diablo 3
8-Bit Arena
Dark Souls
Team Fortress 2
Rocket League
Fallout 3+NV
Skyrim
He's a highschool student. Those usually don't have brain cells.
>Steins Gate isn't popular
You know, I originally thought that the literature club had like 30 members. That you start the game at the point where Monika has already erased most of them and the in universe rules of the club needing at least 4 or whatever was about to become an issue. Dunno why, I figured that would have made for something more horrifying. It was alright regardless.
Why did you post the exact opposite ?
...
Steins;Gate is actually popular as fuck
I mean, I don't think there's anything that would explicitly deny that possibility. Would be neat little idea that could have been hinted at.
