Oh scratch that. You need to make sure it has firmware 11.3 or lower. Can probably find one on ebay or something.

Which firmware have new New 2DS XLs?

When I hacked my 3ds with a gateway flash care (way back in the 9.x firmware days) I shopped around at stores to find a bundle released a while back, I'd recommend doing the same. Nintendo almost certainly will have patched anything put out in the last few months to 11.4+

Flash cart for playing DS games. I think I heard about not needing them anymore but for a while the only way to play DS games was with a flash cart. "Timebomb" is probably referring to the way a lot of cheaper flash carts (either purposely or due to bad design) shit the bed after a month so you have to buy a new one.

Some flash carts don't work after a certain date.
Sept of 2019, of what date, I don't remember.
It's not that big of a deal, but annoying to set the 3ds clock before the date if you want to play DS games.

you can use ds flashcart to hack your 3ds with any firmware

Look up seedminer in GBAtemp, though you need to buy a Dsiware game from e-shop. Like $2 and need someone to mine your seed code using their GPU or CPU. Can use your own too.

If your 3DS firmware is on 11.4 or 11.5, you need one to hack it via ntrboothax. More importantly, ntrboothax is a method that hacks ALL firmwares without a hardmod, so it's viable for any future firmware updates.

You can load all your 3DS games on an SD card, but the only way to play DS games (aside from DSiWare) is with a flashcart

I don't know exactly, something about the system entering a DS-mode that uses DS-specific hardware when you boot a DS cart that hackers haven't figured out how to fully utilize in 3DS-mode yet
