This. The run and gun levels were great, but there weren't enough. In terms of story, Cuphead and his pal Mugman cause some trouble on Inkwell Isle and the only way to fix it is take a boat to some other isle and collect some macguffins to fix it.

But that's boring when playing alone and significantly easier compared to the game's current play-style. The game sold well for (many reasons, but two in particular were) it's satisfying difficulty, and ability to be enjoyed both solo and coop
This would be great but please for the love of god if we're putting bosses at the end of the levels add checkpoints. The levels worked so well because they were short so even if you died it didn't take long to get back to the spot where you died, adding a boss at the end and having to repeat the entire level+boss without a break would just be tedious af. Obviously only reward S rank though for clearing it all in one life so there's still an incentive for it though

If we're changing genre, this, a more traditional JRPG (keeping Action Commands possibly), a Twin Stick Shooter, or a 2.5d FPS in the vein of Doom.

Someone a while back posted a sequel called Pothead, DUDEWEED LMAO aside it was a little bit funny & sounded interesting gameplay wise
The Looney Tunes have had a lot horrible shit done to them since like the 90's. It wasn't just the 2010's.
Same gameplay but add the usual sequel improvements such as new weapons and mechanics. Flesh out the run and gun sections a bit as those were the weakest bits. Also add another level type. Maybe some kind of driving section.
Also do something like suggested and use different styles including Osamu Tezuka, Chuck Jones, and Tex Avery
