Anyone else dislike the stealth archer play-style in Skyrim? It seems like everyone ends up playing a stealth archer at some point, but it's so OP and boring to play that I have a hard time sticking with it.
You creep around everywhere taking cheap shots at your unsuspecting enemies. When you're a low level and you're discovered you either run away and get back to being undetected, hide until undetected, reload, or get your ass kicked. When you get leveled up you're basically and unstoppable killing machine that one shots everything. The whole style feels cheap and cowardly.
Roleplay a Nord that believes fighting from a distance is for cunts.
Cameron Kelly
I've done two playthru's as a sword and board Nord. It's pretty damn fun to be honest. I also did a pure magic build, but vanilla magic sucks ass. I keep trying to do a stealth archer build, because everyone says how fun and good it is, but I just can't stick with it.
Anthony Parker
Try spellsword. Get apocalypse spells ofc. A character built around bound weapons can be a blast as well. My current toon is using bound weapons, conjuration, enchanting, and the become ethereal shout. SKyrim can be major fun with hybrid builds. Also pick a few gods to worship for roleplaying purposes. Get Ordinator for perk overhaul.
Adrian Robinson
>Not playing Orc and killing Dragon Priests at very low level using the OP racial You playing wrong.
Jaxson Davis
I've done one spellsword playthru. Was actually a lot of fun. Might have to try another one.
I haven't played an Orc yet. Tried one on Morrowind, but my save was corrupted.
Wyatt Taylor
Did one for the first time recently. It gets boring once you start zooming in slow motion all the time undetected. I like a light armor two handed nord that's vulnerable but powerful.
Aiden Brooks
>cheapass pseudo-RPGs that play like FPS What you get for playing Skyrimjob.
Jace Robinson
bare-fist is the true way to go
Lincoln Kelly

Brody Cruz
>Also, they're black
Lost it
Jose Baker
i never understood the stealth archer meme. I've never played a stealth archer in any Elder Scrolls game. I also never used followers, so the "dump your loot onto Lydia" memes seemed stupid as well.
Logan Ramirez
>make potions that sell for 1000000000000 >boost speech to 100 everytime you sell 1 potion >abuse legenday leveling to reach level 300 and get every perk in the game
Joseph Young
I dont know I never played like this Skyrim is already a very easy game, no point in making it easier Also, all my characters were nords
Wyatt Barnes
Because Melee feels like shit. Combat in general feels like shit really, even stealth archer.
Playing stealth archer means I get to experience the least amount of combat. Assuming I just don't dialouge out of combat encounters, what little chance there is.
Ryder Wood
Only way to play the game if you play it on legendary or whatever the highest difficulty setting is. Otherwise you just get shit on because the combat system isnt that good. Ive done a 1h/shield build. 2h build. And sneaky archer build is just the best. Tried magic but its shit.
While it might feel cheap, thats the game's fault for having enemies hit like a fucking truck no matter what level on the hardest difficulty.
John Rodriguez
Archery is fun, but why does it have to be paired with stealth? Why can't we have more combat oriented archery? It cant be that bad, there's an archer in the Companions, for crying out loud
Kayden Sanders
There's just no way to get tanky enough to facetank things on the higher difficulties. The combat is okay but just isn't that great.
Joseph Powell
Which is better: 2 handed weapons, or 1 handed and shield?
Also Mace, Axe, or Sword?
Xavier Hernandez
>implying there's a single fun character build in any modern Bethesda game
Lincoln Hall
sword and board is probably the safer choice if you have a mind towards not dying, but nothing really beats the time to body-count ratio that 2 handed weapons have.
John Anderson
>toon
Nolan Fisher
Melee sucks, magic requires a lot of effort to make good, stealth archer is fun in that you can exploit dumb enemy AI.
Michael Hernandez
have you tried how fucking TERRIBLE mage is? in any extended fight, you'll be forced to use the low level variants of your spells because you cannot use the better ones due to running out of magica in fucking seconds. You're also forced to dual cast, I wanted to play to play with a dagger in main hand and spells in offhand, so I'm ready to retaliate in melee. But you just lose out on SO MUCH damage output if you don't dual cast that you simply can't.
Every extended fight is just dropping down a flame/frost atronach and dual casting firebolt until everything dies
and you better fucking hope you took the race that has the magica restoring power, because if not, enjoy hopping around for a fucking hour or guzzle down on potions nonstop even if you just use firebolt
Jayden Barnes
At least with this you're forced to aim, the rest of Skyrim gameplay can be resumed as running in front of your enemies and mashing mouse1 or R2 to hit tout sword on some weightless ragdoll. So yes, I think archery is the best fighting skill in the entire game.
William Turner
Enchant rings, amulets and circlets with destruction fool, you can make master spells cost 0 if you want. That skill is one of the fastest raising in the game.
David Powell
not to mention to even play mage, you have to put everything into magica, so you can't carry a lot of shit & you get one shot by half the lategame shit in the game
Nicholas Collins
>you have to put everything into magica wrong
Nolan Clark
Fucking kahjiits doin' alcohol and WEED LMAO all day
Angel Torres
If you want to something different, try playing as a healer/support mage and letting your followers do most of the work.
Colton Reed
x30 damage dagger backstab > stealth archery
Oliver Phillips
pah, you fools fighting with conventional weapons and arcane magic, I've mastered the art of throwing my weapon on the ground and crying really loudly so they get uncomfortable and run away
Angel Ramirez
Never really got the pack rat mentality, just don't pick shit up lmao
Ryder Perry
then enjoy waiting or slurping potions even more because you can't even finish a fight with 3 trash mobs before running out of magicka
Brody Wright
Conjuration and illusion are both mad OP skills, retard. i bet you are a n00b being surprised to find that you cant beat the game with destruction spells.
Daniel Ramirez
Deadly combat Ultimate dodge mod Schlongs of Skyrim UNP or CBBE Feminine argonian textures
There you go, it's at least partway decent now.
Ayden Foster
Sword and bird is honestly the most fun I’ve had with the game >end game >smacking some guy with the shield so hard his staff flies across the room >he has to stand there just flailing at me with his fists
Jordan Roberts
i hate it
i also hate the sneak attack damage bonus so much. especially in fallout where it makes no fucking sense at all
Jace Johnson
I never used illusion because the only spell that does anything is fury, and that cost so much magica at the time I couldn't afford to cast it and now everything is too high level for it
I do use conjuration, since even in the post I talk about atronachs
Dominic Russell
Becomes a non-issue as an enchanter. You can boost your health by 70 per piece and once the skill is at 100 you get 2 enchantments per item.
Angel James
I'm using amulet of akatosh & morokei haven't done rings yet because my enchanting isn't low enough to reach their maximum potential so it'd feel like a waste
Samuel Bennett
I had to give up similar build on hardest difficulty >first dungeon >encounter enemy >get ready for a fight >first attack is a cutscene of him slicing my head off >reload >next attack is another cutscene >reload >repeat >tfw every single attack kills me in a single hit and will always trigger a cutscene death >spend the rest of the fight kiting them around the room taking cheap shots I didn’t even make it to the end of the dungeon. Maybe it was a mistake to do that build on a hard difficulty. Can’t even imagine how fighting dragons is going to be.
Juan Jenkins
I stopped increasing my magicka at 250 because of the equipment I have basically lowers the cost of spells + perks..
Hell even early game it wasn't that much of an issue. Maybe you just suck at playing?
Thomas Martin
well what good are dick and tiddy mods if there's nothing to do with them? do you just remove clothes from npc's inventories and beat off to them while you crouch behind them or what?
Jordan Anderson
If you’re already playing outside vanilla, might as well just mod max level then.
Connor Jenkins
Most of the good sexlab mods aren't ported to sse yet, so unless you enjoy instability of the original skyrim that's really all you can do.
Justin Lewis
Those items aren't really worth it. You'll feel much more powerful with custom enchanted jewelery with the destruction skill enchantment on them all and the arch-mage robe. There's also "dunmer shoes" in solstheim that let you apply the enchantment as well. You just need about 50 skill in enchanting minimum with the perks that boost it to make it good.
Owen Cooper
>he dosent play a 600 year old high elf who uses alteration magic on his skin to become invincible while mass paralyzing foes only to smite them down with his 1000000 times folded akaviri steel katana
Eli Lewis
Has anyone made a mod pack for skyrim? I really don't want to invest the several hours of fucking with load orders, downloads, conflicts, and other bullshit for the twentieth time.
Joshua Carter
I've never bothered with archery, it was weak. Magic and melee is a lot more effective.
Oliver Anderson
>Giving Skyrim SSE my first try in 2018, using a nice modlist that is essentially Vanilla+ >Try the stealth archer meme build >It starts out kinda weak and very quickly ramps up to be very powerful, but I get bored easily of crouching around dungeons and sniping enemies for massive damage >Try playing as a mage instead >It's okay, but not that amazing
I wanted to keep my first playthrough clean of overhaul mods, but is Apocalypse essentially required for any level of fun magic and maybe Ordinator for the perks?
Dominic Reed
>boosting health with equipment but then you can't increase your magic stats
I'm using master robes already, even expert robes seem better than Arch mage
Liam Reed
yes and its been linked several times before, go look in the archives
Benjamin Cox
High Elf
get that trash outta here
Daniel Gomez
not all Altmer are thalmor niggers
Angel Wright
You can make the melee combat half-decent with the right mods so going sword and board isn't all that bad then.
Nolan Scott
It's hard to make a "mod" pack just due to how the whole modding scene works. There are so many individual mods from so many different people, a lot of which are still working and updating their mods. Not to mention quite a few of em want to have absolute control of where their mod is published and disallow people to use it anywhere else. All of the Bethesda game could use "modpacks" that you just install and it significantly improves the game, but due to a mix of every whiny mod authors and so many individual people doing their own thing, it always falls apart.
Best we got are guides that try to guide you step by step by what could be probably packed into a single massive installation with a few extra steps to take.
Aaron Baker
Try a stealth proctologist build, sneak up on fags and check their prostate with your knife
Daniel Bennett
Master robes are fine if you want to specialize in a particular skill reduction, Arch-mage just reduces the cost of all magic. Boosting your magicka is less important once destruction virtually costs nothing to use expert spells.
David Rodriguez
it takes 8 dual cast firebolts to kill a forsworn pillager, which are just trash mobs, 8 x 2 (dual cast) x 13 is 208 Sure I don't have the destruction robes, but even with those it'd still be 160
250 would mean you can't summon a frost atronach and then kill a trash mob
Sebastian Foster
>complains about being too OP against Ai enemies that were literally designed to be defeated by the player becoming OP.
enemy ai and why their so goddam inept is a whole field of computer science. in short if you want a challenge, play a pvp multiplayer game.
Josiah Rivera
>Not playing a young protege apprentice dunmer of Master Neloth and living in your own mushroom tower with ash guardian guards
Samuel Sanders
>No one answered this
Is there any way to make the actual combat part of the game fun? It'd be nice to actually explore this world and at least try to enjoy the story, it seems pretty damn packed with stuff "to do" at the very least, but it's hard to get over the combat.
Grayson Reyes
most likely the combat overhauls have one of three goals in mine
>Making it harder >Making it more fun >Making it more in depth/varied
If a combat overhaul does none of these, what's the point?
Kayden Evans
Everyone plays it because its the most satisfying combat wise.
While melee combat is simply boring as fuck, and magic can be hit and miss, stealth archer offers the most "complex" gameplay (relatively speaking.)
You're forced to consider your positioning to stay in stealth, and choose your shots so you don't get uncovered. In addition, getting a hit while stealthed gives you a satisfying sound indicating you've done so.
Sure, it eventually gets boring due to the damage stacking, but early game its the most enjoyable.
Aiden Wood
In this game the difficulty of combat really depends on the blacksmithing and enchanting skills mixed with potions and that boost them. You can make some seriously powerful gear like 2000 armor and 200 damage swords and become a god.
Brody Clark
>not playing a high elf cock slave to the storm cloaks
Chase James
I guess I was looking into more of an RPG in the sense of being a character in the world. Something closer to a tabletop RPG, maybe. In this I feel I start a little way too powerful and get insanely OP even quicker.
Is it worth to just deal with the easy-ish combat as it is to get to see the game's quests/companions/regions for the first time? Is stealth archer really the most "fun" way to experience that as said? I'm liking the idea of a pure, high damage glass cannon mage.
Nathaniel Smith
magic in skyrim is absolutely fucked because it doesn't scale with level, spells always do a fixed amount of damage which can only be augmented by the elemental buffs in the destruction tree, and by dual-casting (and once you have all those buffs you have already hit the wall for as hard as you can EVER hit as a mage)
luckily there are mods for EXACTLY this problem, so spells will get stronger depending on your base level and the level of your destruction skill (as well as other mods to add thousands of new spells)
I sincerely hope Bethesda fix magic for the next elder scrolls
Wyatt Harris
Being in stealth doesn't matter once you get slow motion zoom. That's all she wrote no enemy can take it. There's really nothing complex about it you just have to make lots of arrows in bulk by chopping wood and buying ingots.
Aiden Wood
I'm not saying its good gameplay, I'm saying its the best available.
Jaxon Sullivan
I like a monk build of sorts. Unarmed with mage armor and wards, archery for ranged. Instead of stealth, use illusion for crowd control.
Aiden Smith
You're just screwed if you don't use enchanting, but if you do it's a legit way without mods to feel super powerful as a mage. Get in the habit of picking up lesser and petty soulgems and soul trapping the shit out of everything.
Gavin Long
>I'm liking the idea of a pure, high damage glass cannon mage. It's a fucking pain, I can tell you right now
you start off pretty strong & gradually get weaker and weaker, since your damage doesn't scale
Brody Gutierrez
it's a damn shame Magic is so crap in Skyrim, because for the first time it was fun to use.
Jonathan Cox
So.. if I found stealth archering kinda boring and Mage becomes a drag, am I supposed to just straight up go melee and bash things in the face? What is the secret to have fun in this game when fighting other things?
Connor Lewis
And then you get the stagger perk and still deal no damage but nor can the enemies hit you anymore Man Beth is shit at game design
Andrew Morgan
>Anyone else dislike the stealth archer play-style in Skyrim? No, that's how I prefer to play in every game which permits it. It's fun.
Juan Ward
I'm trying to come up with an answer, but I'm failing. guess you could spec into Necromancy or Summon Atronachs or something.
Julian Evans
Difficulty in TES games has always been stupid. Play Oblivion on the hardest difficulty and the hardest fight in the game is the first two rats in the tutorial.
Madness.
Parker Rivera
Could try dagger assassin instead of stealth archer. Similar but more up close and personal with a throat slitting animation.
Jayden Nelson
>What is the secret to have fun in this game when fighting other things?
You don't. The games combat is shit. Find a better game.
Cooper Clark
that's an obvious choice in any mage path, but it's a support tree, not a main tree, in the higher levels, your atronachs die really fucking quickly
Asher Lee
>damage doesn't scale Quit playing vanilla, faggot.
Easton Cruz
The trick to having good gameplay in Skyrim is playing a different game
Leo Rogers
But people said you have to play vanilla first
Joseph Sanchez
It's probably not in the vanilla spells but the last time I made a summoner type character he was able to use a summoning spell which summoned a dozen or so random warriors to fight for you. It was pretty fucking hilarious to sit near a large enemy encampment outside of some ruins or one of the armies on the opposing side of the main quest line and watch the chaos unfold.
Yes, yes, we get the point, faggot. Find a different thread to shit up.
Joshua Collins
That's what I was going for originally. Then I realized how much more powerful bows were at low level. I may just power through and go down this route anyways. The whole rogue assassin thing is what I was going for originally anyways.
Jace Campbell
just play shitty dark souls
Angel Thompson
No one has ever said that about a bethesda game.
Kayden Baker
Poor user is desperate to get good gameplay out of Skyrim when that's just not a thing, someone got to tell him
Camden Wright
>two posts three hours apart are surely the same person you wot m8
Kayden Ortiz
So I feel like trying out a survival mod, is Frostfall the best one? Is it worthwhile?
Landon Green
>tes6 will be even more casualized
Dylan Bell
Thanks for being honest. I hope I can get something out of the "story" and actually get into the roleplaying aspect some. For reference, I went with this guide: wiki.step-project.com/User:TechAngel85/SSE_Guide/v2
Mostly graphical/audio stuff, with a few gameplay tweaks and patches along the way. No real overhauls of anything though. I'll just power through it and see where I end up on the fun scale.
Brody Gonzalez
try the perk overhauls instead like skyre or ordinator
more interesting builds
Christopher Ward
YEAH use it with campfire and tentapolza, cloak mods and wet and cold.
Wyatt Parker
To actually be honest, I haven't looked at the modding scene in years, maybe someon has managed to wrestle some good gameplay out of the game by now But I've been looking into it and it seems that the consensus is 'no' It's still a decent game for a playthrough, the world is large and pretty with the right mods, the music is sweet, stuff like that, but you'll never feel like you just achieved something skillful in battle The base systems are just not there
Ayden Morgan
Will I ever be able to feel like an actual assassin, sneaking into people's houses at night and killing them for some mission reason? I'm not expecting tabletop RPG levels of detail, but if it can at least get to that extent, I'm happy.
