Is this perhaps the most overrated platformer of all time?
It's a solid game don't me wrong but I wouldn't even call it the best Mario of all time. And yet every millennial aficionado I run into seems convinced this is the peak of platforming. But based on what exactly?
I constantly see this game top gamer blog Kotaku-esque click bait garbage like "Top 20 All Time Platformers, "Top 25 16-bit games", "The All Time Best SNES Games". I hear it from friends and co workers. Am I missing something here? The Sound is charming but mediocre & the art is hella flat in comparison to what platformers like Sonic did with inferior tech around the same time. Unlike Mario 64 which defined 3D platforming and revolutionized gaming, SMW did little for the genre to warrant its place as the GOAT platformer. How is this even on the same tier as Symphony of the Night, Super Metroid, Oddworld, S3&K, Warioland 4, etc.?
Is this the GOAT Mario title? Not really. Hell not even top 5.
Is this the GOAT SNES platformer? Not at all.
So how is this the GOAT platformer to so many?
Logan Murphy
Excellent gameplay mechanics, tight precise controls, fun diverse levels, a wide variety of enemies, good challenge for completionists. Only hampered by easy boss fights.
Joshua Martin
>diverse levels
Easton Reed
Wouldn't Mario 3 be a better example of these things considering it already had that stuff polished back in the 8-bit era?
Lucas King
That image misses a few levels from SMW, seemingly intentionally
Cameron Wood
No
Luke Harris
i think its great
Ethan Smith
It's absolutely overrated. Miyamoto himself said how the game was rushed. Both SMB3 and Yoshi's Island are more innovative.
Ryan Phillips
It's up there.
I would argue that Sonic 3 is the most overrated platformer of all time, though. As a platformer, it sucks. And as a speed game it's just boring as fuck.
Michael Sanchez
An absolute shitter. Almost every single level on Mario World throws something new at the player.
Yeah, I played this back when it was released. I played it so much I actually had a blister on my thumb. It is - and always will be - one the best games of all time.
Joseph Cooper
Mario 3 is better
Nolan Torres
It's fun to the point people like it a lot even though it adds pretty much nothing to 2D Mario platformers. It's that simple.
Dominic Jones
>and always will be
Eh, it's a great experience for somebody who hasn't played it before, I'll agree on that. But it's tough to go back to once you have all the secrets and hidden exits memorized. The gameplay will always hold up but the relative lack of challenge makes for a pretty boring experience upon replays.
Jose Robinson
Thats like comparing cake to icecream. Both are great. Personally I prefer Mario World - it looks far better, controls far better, the levels are far bigger and more complex, there's are more game play diversity amongst the design of the levels. I even like the fact the overworld is a connected world map rather than just compartmentalised zones. Better final boss.
Gavin Stewart
Sure, World is certainly one of the best games and will always be, but Mario 3 will always be King.
I absolutely love world and have beaten it countless times - but the level variety is bland. It's all the same shit. They're also easy as fuck.
Mario 3 at least has the decency to have many themed levels, and has more variety in the powerups. The controls are virtually as good as world as well. Mario 3 is the only game in the series I have not beaten yet, and it's because the final stages are actually difficult.
Elijah Ross
>it’s all the same shit Get some glasses, my man
Camden Hernandez
You're kidding right? S3&K had top notch level design. Was absolutely gorgeous for a Genesis title. Had a killer soundtrack. Interesting, original game mechanics and physics. Real nice simple & effective story telling. Loads of fun to replay and difficult as hell to master.
William Cruz
3 is legit better. At least in that game you can ignore the P-Wing or blow it on a shit level and you can;t just "go back" and farm lives either. Instead in SMW you receive Feathers for the Cape god at every opportunity.
Parker Reyes
it is to me, playing it as a kid such a downgrade from 3 also looks ugly wish it wasn't a launch title
James Taylor
Holy bait Almost all levels on Mario 3 are also at World Fuck whichever corrupted human being made this image along with all who share it non ironically
Bentley Bell
The graphics are actually bland and the gameplay is very easy and sucks for replayability. It's absolutely overrated.
Xavier Kelly
I think the first DKC is the most overrated platformer of all time.
Jaxon Bennett
Why? Excellent music, great graphics, unique gameplay mechanics, lots of secrets, co-op/vs.
Carter Green
Does it really matter if something is 'overrated' or not? Does the fact that other people like a thing really bother you? Just play fucking games you like.
Matthew Kelly
>sucks for replayability What a fucking lie. Why do you fuckers think every first time player knows all the exits?
Blake Hughes
The level design is very barebones and they recycle too many assets. Mine levels are the majority and too many resort to spiked wheels going up and down as hazards. 90% of the boss fights are garbage.
Cameron Robinson
Mario World is the only classic Mario game I've gotten bored of. It was great at the time, though.
Elijah Martin
I'm saying it sucks for replayability because the game is so easy. Who gives a fuck about exits?
There's really not much recycled assets at all. You're going to have to show me otherwise because that is straight up wrong. And no, most levels had a gimmick and therefore didn't rely on "up and down spikes". Boss fights are indeed lame in this game.
Mason Cook
Don’t be dumb user. Finding all the exits and actually gaining access to all the levels adds replay value to the game.
Jayden Hughes
Yeah, so you can unlock more easy and forgettable levels. People hardly care.
Robert Carter
I think he's talking about replaying the game after you know where all the exits are. It doesn't take very long to discover all of the game's secrets.
Thomas Wood
>I speak for all people Again don’t be dumb user, just because you think have shitty memory doesn’t mean you get to decide the levels are forgettable for everyone. I bet you cheese everything with the cape feather like a chump
Tyler Adams
I remember most of the levels and that's exactly why I don't want to replay the game again; the levels are so bland and easy. Most people like easy and accessible games; what's your point?
Brandon Watson
casuals m8, they don't understand risk reward, speedrunning or wanting to complate a game.
Mason Myers
I’ve already made my point
Hunter Price
The game was a game about secrets. Secrets in smw were a big deal. You wouldnt understand it since you are from the era of having a guide open on your iphone
Samuel Long
It's okay that you like easy and accessible games; most people do. You don't have to argue with me.
I found most of them when I was 6 years old. Fuck off.
