Free to start is an entirely different model than microtransactions. It just gives you a tiny chunk of the game as a demo and allows you to not buy the whole game or but the whole game outright a normal pricetag.

I don't know why it's seemingly so hard to make a new one. GX was perfect. All they'd need to do is make GX again, but with new tracks, online, and a more expansive custom machine feature.

Isn't that ideal, in concept? Why remake the best game (and potentially make it worse) when you could remake the worst game and "fix" it in the process?

There was an article several years ago that mentioned there's been no new F-Zero because Nintendo had no idea what new mechanics to add to the next game. I think another article later mentioned they didn't really have an interest in making one anymore. I can't remember the specific sources, so take these with a grain of salt.

They tried to get Criterion to make a new one on the Wii U, but they said no. So they at least still care about it a little.

Wasn't the 4th one supposed to be released about 5 years ago now? Last I heard, Nintendo was saying 4 was basically almost done.

Nintendo themselves haven't said anything about it, but Miyamoto has give small updates about Pikmin 4 for about 4 years now. He said it was almost done in around 2015 I believe. Later he said that it was taking longer to get out due to Mario Odyssey and BOTW needing devs from Pikmin 4's dev team. It should be shown sometime around E3 though.

Miyamoto did state that what amusement vision did with f zero was perfect and that whatever Nintendo did from that point with the series would be down hill. Theyd rather let it die on a high note.
