I didn't say a thing about the quality of either game, just that they follow the same structure (first half of the game has large open areas, second half has more restrictive areas).

He wasn't a good fit for the game considering the second half decides to bring back themes from gears/saga. None of that applies to him and the best parts of the story have nothing to do with Rex

It makes perfect sense for the zone design to focus together with the narrative. No matter how many open zones they make, they're never going to give you twelve hours of exploration right before the final boss.
The final areas are linear, but as far as level design goes they're still unique and involved.
